Is Google Drive available on Android TV ?

I wanted to pick up an Android TV box from Amazon so i can watch my media from Google Drive.

Is this possible without having to do a bunch of confusing stuff like on Apple TV and Roku ?

Thanks.

Ethernet connection works for YouTube, nothing else

This is a very weird issue I'm running into, hoping someone here can give me some troubleshooting ideas.

I've had my shield for months, and it's always been hooked up to the Ethernet. In the last couple of days, streaming services have displayed network errors only when accessed through Ethernet. If I switch from Ethernet to WiFi, it starts working again. I also cannot connect to the app store over Ethernet.

Weird wrinkles:

  • YouTube still works on Ethernet when nothing else does, so it's not as if the Ethernet connection itself is completely failing.

  • Ethernet still works on other devices.

  • I got network errors once on wifi as well

What I've tried:

  • Restarting shield

  • Restarting internet gateway

  • Restarting ONT box (This worked for a few hours before issue returned)

  • Uninstalling streaming apps

  • Resetting IP setting from Static to DCHP

The only significant change I've made recently is setting up my shield as a Plex Server. I enabled transferring over network, and changed the IP setting to Static.

I'm hoping someone might be able to point me towards something I'm missing. Thanks

Made a simple photo slideshow app for Android TV

Hi Reddit, I've got something that might be useful for you, but first a little backstory.

Last Christmas I bought my parents an Nvidia Shield TV to let them watch Netflix instead of terrible TV shows. By the way, I uploaded my wedding photos so they could view them and show to others whenever they want. What a surprise when it turned out that the built-in photo viewer has absolutely no functionality. Not only I couldn't start the slideshow, the pictures were shown from the newest first and it couldn't be changed.

I tested several applications available in the Play store, but they are all weird or have a non-intuitive interface. Not good for my parents. Seeing that there is a potentially unresolved use case here, I decided to make my own app, which would be as simple to use as possible, only with the necessary options that will just let the user view his photos and play a slideshow. I called it Photos TV.

The app automatically scans the device, so you don't have to go through the cumbersome process of manual folder selection and building the library. The slideshow has an interface known from the old version of YouTube and is easy to use. Additionally it has some useful options such as repeat, shuffle, screen fit and slide duration.

The app is free, so use it at your will. If it gets some momentum, I'll consider bringing premium features such as Google Photos integration or NAS support.

Please let me know what you think about this app and whether it makes sense to develop it at all. Personally, I would like to have something for displaying my Google Photos in much better quality than Chromecast does. I don't carry a 1.5kg DSLR on my trips to later see my pictures in shitty Chromecast compression. But that's just me, maybe the problem is not as common as I think. Your feedback will be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Ultra Smooth Motion (AMR+800): Is that normal that while watching a movie some parts feels juddery while others properly smoothed out by ULTRA SMOOTH MOTION feature? Like its normal that it doesnt smooth properly all the objects?

  1. Also, in some (not always) places when one objects moves fast above others, behind the fronted object its like computerized artifacts, thats a normal effect of ultra smoothing in 4K TVs?

  2. On 30FPS content it works pretty well, on 60FPS content judder is terrible like Utra Smooth Motion doesn't really do any correction, is that nomral?

Mi Box S - multiple remotes?

I have a Mi Box S. I was wondering, would 2 remotes work? I find the range to be excellent and when I take my remote with my to my home office, I can pause the video being played from there. However, most of the time my remote is in the living room where the TV is.

I was wondering if I could buy another remote and keep that in the office?

My guess is that it wouldn't work but I wanted to make sure.

Can I set up Android TV like a PVR? Help for a newbie

Firstly I am very new to all this so I appreciate the patience and advice.

I just bought a PVR, I did this on a bit of a whim and in hindsight there are a few things I'm not sure of.

I've since seen that Android TV might solve my issue (and be a much simpler fix). Any thoughts or suggestions from those in know would be a huge help.

Ultimately I want a product that will record free to air TV, that I can put on a hardrive and play on any device.

I made a snap decision (I know, rookie mistake) and bought a PVR which, as it turns out, locks the content to that machine only so I can't watch the content elsewhere.

From what I've read of Android TV there are apps that you can watch free to air TV? How does this work? Do I need a specific android TV box (if so, can I play the content on any device?)

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Xiaomi Mi Box problem when I try to watch a movie

Hello everyone,

One month ago I bought the TV box that I attached in the post. I bought it bc I really like to watch movies every weekend with pizza, and everytime that i wanted to watch one movie, I had to move my incredibly heavy PC thre floors downstairs, conect it via HDMI and watch the movie with VLC. My computer is really powerful, so I always try to download the 4K Blu Ray movie, something that is like 50-70 GB, to watch it in the best possible way enjoying every single detail.

A friend recomended me to buy this TV box, an external hard drive of 1 tb, and to plug the tv box in my living room tv (it is not an smart tv), download something called KODI, fill the hard drive with all the films from my computer, and conect the HDD to the Xiaomi mi box. My tv is just 1080p btw, so i can just config the tv box to 1080p 60hz.

That is what I did, and omfg, KODI made a really beautiful library with my films, showing the actors, directors, cover, plot summary etc. with a nice interface. I was living a dream. The problem is that, when I try to watch warever movie (even those that are microHD and just have 3-5 gb), they have like "microlag". LEt me explain, the movie works properly but, every 4 or 5 seconds, you see a almost unoticeable freeze. If you dont care, you can watch perfectly the movie but, if you are a maniac like me, it is inmposible, every "microlag" is a knife in my heart.

In my pc, the movies works fine, absolutely smooth.

I think it could be those things:

  • The tv box is not enough powerful and cant handle 60 gb movies, but is absurd bc 4 gb movies have the same problem.
    • Please, if you think is that option, I would like you to recomend me any TV box that you think is better for what I want, watch High Quality and heavy films with a player, like nvidia shield or something like this.
  • Just have usb 2.0, not 3.0 (the blue one), so maybe cant take the data from the hdd as fast as it needs (i dont know about computers, so maybe im saying a supidity)
  • Maybe is KODI, so I downloaded VLC for android, but i works even worst. And, I dont know why, if I activate subtitles, lag is horrible.

Thats all, thank you very much for helping me bc i dont know what to do.

My Toshiba won't play it as HDR and Toshiba support asking me show them short video / photos of other TVs playing it and recognize it as HDR so they can troubleshoot my TV issue.

My model u7950 per Toshiba official support it must be able properly play HdR10, HdR10+, HLG and Dolby Vision.

Thank you!

Extend disk space

I have a Mi Box S, with AndroidTV 9.

I plugged a 1TB USB external drive. When prompted, I allowed to format the disk to be used by AndroidTV.

Now, how do I know that it worked, and what does it mean?

Using a file explorer, I no longer see my external drive, I only see "Local". But how do I know if I really have 1TB now instead of 5GB?

Is only one specific directory mounted in the external drive? If so which one?

Using the app "AIDA64", I still see 5GB under "internal storage".

EDIT: It seems to be "working" since I've just tried to upload (I use the ftp server app) large movie files to the Movies folder and it did not complain. Still I'm not comfortable with the "vodoo" aspect of this. Where are my files? How do I know if something is in the external drive or the internal drive?

Am I the only one disappointed with the crippled AndroidTV Google Play store?

Compared to the smartphone version, the Play store in AndroidTV seems to be crippled by a lot to me.

Whats especially annoying is that I cannot manually search for software updates. This is such a basic function, but I guess we have to live without it...

I am on Sony, by the way.

Need to get it right this time

Hello! So earlier today I returned my Mi Box S on amazon for a full refund. So I now have another chance to get a good Android TV Box. I know about the Nvidia Shields, and I'm definitely going to take a look at them, but is there really anything else? I don't want an off brand one. If anyone has a good experience with other certified boxes, please LMK. I live in the US so preferably one that's sold somewhere like Amazon. Thanks a lot!

Edit: Bought the shield! It's coming tomorrow, I'm very excited. Thanks everyone who provided advice.

Which 2019 Shield to buy for a Sony Bravia 2017 model?

I have a Sony Bravia KD85XE8596 from 2017. You've heard it all before, it's slow, inflexible, UI is sluggish etc.

I already have a 2017 Shield in my bedroom which I think is brilliant.

I've resisted pulling the trigger on a second Shield to use with my Bravia for a while but I'm now starting to think that I shouldn't have to accept and put up with this subpar performance from my television. Visually it's a great TV but the performance of ATV on it is, as we know, utter pants.

I've been looking around on Reddit for weeks in here and in r/ShieldTV and r/Bravia for advice on this but haven't quite found what I'm looking for.

My question is:

Which Shield TV should I buy for my Bravia? The tube or the pro?

To give you an idea of my needs, I use:

Plex for home network streaming, sometimes in 4K Netflix Prime Video Sports streaming apps A VPN app

However, with a Shield I would likely also use game streaming apps such as Nvidia's own or Steam to play my PC games on my living room TV).

That's more or less about it. Perhaps that's why I've managed to get by so far. It seems like the 2019 Pro version is a no-brainer for only £50 more, but I'm wondering if it's overkill and if I'd be unnecessarily wasting money when the tube would be more than capable for fulfilling my requirements.

Of course, feel free to tell me if for any reason I'm being silly and should in fact, stick with the Bravia as it is.
