Bye bye shield tube hello ftv4k max

So for a while now my Nvidia shield tube was becoming slow and had trouble with 4k content. Lately it would lock up playing 4k in YouTube and Netflix.

I talked with Nvidia and rma'd it. Got a new one last week. Felt a bit snappier and was able to play 4k in everything except plex.

It still stutters opening Netflix. It still redraws the home screen every other time I exit an app.

On Monday a friend came back from a trip to the states and brought me ftv4k max.

To my absolute surprise this 35$ (on sale) device feels snappier than the tube and plays 4k HDR on all my apps including plex from local and remote server with no issues.

I'm trying to figure out if the difference is due to the fact that the tegra has an amazing GPU but mediocre CPU, the fact that fireos is based on Android 9 without Google bloat or a combo of both.

But I know for sure that I won't recommend the shield, even the pro, to anyone unless they're game streaming , ever again.

TCL r646 usb stick?

I have a usb 3.0 stick that works on my TCL Roku r617 tv..but it doesn't work on my newer TCL r646 Google tv.

I tried using a usb 2.0 extension cord (cos my usb 2.0 stick works on the r646) but that doesn't work either..I've tried every format and seems none of them allow the stick to be detected

Would a powered USB extension port work? I really want to be able to download large files over 4gig and have to use exfat on my usb 2.0 stick just to use the usb stick on the tv..crazy how my 3 year old Roku TCL has no issues! Thx for any help

Hi all.

Wondering if such an app exists where you can control the volume of each app on android TV similar to how you can on Samsung phones.

Thanks

Onn media streamer 4K hub and adoptive storage

I got the 4K one that is a square box. I like to see if I can upgrade the box to do the following:

  1. Add a passthrough powered hub since the unit has no expansion.
  2. Add a USB flash to increase the storage.
  3. May be add a controller?

I thought I could set it up to do some retro-gaming for the kids. Anyone tried this and does it work? Which device did you use?

Update I purchased SUYAMA USB OTG Adapter for TV Stick and use that as a hub. I then install a usb flash formatted in fat32. Exfat volume could not be mounted. The system reports the exfat as corrupted.

There are apparently ways to set up adoptive storage but since only usb 2 is supported this sounds like a bad idea. As an android game system this would not work due to a lack of storage. For a emulator it works fine since you can store all the roms on external drive and roms are small enough for a fat32 file system.

New UI update missing Netflix

Hey guys I just got the new UI here in NZ, but when I go to add services in the Discover page, it doesn't have an option for Netflix, only Disney+, Apple TV+, and Prime Video to attach to my Google account. Netflix is actually the only streaming service I have so I was just wondering if you guys might know why it's not showing up.

Cheers!

TV switches to Chromecast GTV input randomly

During Black Friday week I bought a Chromecast with Google TV. I used it to replace my Chromecast 2nd generation.
The new one is in the same HDMI port as the previous one. The TV is a 10 year old Samsung.
Since the upgrade my TV sometimes switches from my TV decoder (on HDMI1) to the Chromecast (on HDMI2). This has never happened with the old Chromecast during the 5+years I used it.

The Chromecast GTV is on 24/7.

Does anybody know what causes my TV set to switch to a different HDMI input?

The Switch To Fire Cube--Wow!

I really liked my Tivo Stream 4k until Google messed with the Android remote app. The new one disconnected constantly and the old one I reverted back to started freezing up my phone after the last security update (the only freezes I've had). So I bought the Fire Cube on sale, which is based on a forked version of Android/Google TV.

This device is so much faster than the Tivo Stream 4k, which is surprising because I don't think of fast when I think of Fire devices (and yes I own a Fire Streaming dongle). It's like the apps stay in memory because switching from Amazon to Netflix (or whatever) is almost instantaneous. And this is the first HDMI device I've had that has been able to turn both my TV and soundbar both on and off. Finally, it allows me to eliminate one Echo device, and having an Ethernet connection is nice.

I hadn't used the Android remote app for the Fire Stick I use in my RV, so that is an unexpected bonus. Ironically the comments for the app mention a lot of disconnects, but I didn't have a problem the first night. It is different than the Google apps though in that it has separate lock screen controls whereas the Google app basically overrides the lock screen to give you the full remote. The Fire lock screen controls will allow you to pause/start and volume up/down, but not FF/REW.

The only negative I've found so far is that when I was first connecting the ChannelsDVR app to my server device, I couldn't find a way to enter its IP address--no keypad on the physical remote. Having already setup the Android remote app I didn't look long for a solution and instead used that app.

Anyway, this is the biggest advance in streaming devices for me since buying a Tivo Bolt way back in 2015. That device also offered an Ethernet connection. The two streaming dongles I've bought (Tivo Stream 4k and a Tivo Fire Stick) were on par or below that 2015 device, which is sort of sad, but for under $50 I wasn't expecting much. In contrast, this $70 device was surprisingly good.

Network disconnected

Just got our Sony TV for weeks. It's wired connected. But yesterday the connection lost. The TV got itself a 169. IP address , instead of the normal 168. All the other connections to the router were fine. So I have to restart the TV to fix it.

Any one saw this before?

Looling to buy a USBsitter for my Xiaomi Mi Box. Will an unpowered USB hub work with a 1TB external hard drive and 64 GB pen drive?

As the post states I need more internal storage due to using Kodi so I want to plug in a pen drive as internal storage whilst also being able to use my external hard drive? What kind of USB splitter should I buy? Will an unpowered one work or do I need a better one that is powered?

How do you enable the internal volume controls?

I have a PC running AndroidTV x86 and the android volume controls don't do anything. Its outputting through HDMI fine and I can control the volume on the TV but I would rather use the Android remote. I saw a post about how to switch from device to android but for the life of me I can't find it again. Does anyone know where to switch it? Or a ADB command to switch what controls the volume.

New HBO Max app released, much better overall, but already has audio issues

https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/warnermedia-direct-llc/hbo-max-stream-hbo-tv-movies-more/hbo-max-stream-hbo-tv-movies-more-50-63-1-release/

Much more snappy and responsive on my Shield and the UI is much improved. Everything seems good except the no DD+ issue is back again. DD only which means no Atmos.🙄

Don’t they check their apps before they release them? We know from the Kodi HBO Max addon that HBO has two different audio encodes, both a DD+ and a DD track for all their English content. All someone needed to do was check to see if the app was sending out the right track on the Android TV app. They probably play all their audio through their TVs so didn’t notice.

Googletv problem adding USB storage

Pleassee help this is driving me nuts. I'm relatively tech savvy have viewed all the tutorials to add extra storage to googletv puck. Using a USB c hub with extra power brick 25w sufficient to run an 8gb usb stick formatted to fat32. I've got Dev mode switched on. Each time I plug in a usb drive to the hub it simply doesn't recognize it at all no error mesgs nothing. I've tried multiple diff brands of usb stick all formatted correctly for fat32. And none work. I've tested the USB c hub in my laptop seperatly as well as the USB sticks and all work fine it's just when connected together it simply doesn't recognize they're connected. Any help greatly appreciated.

Split-screen local multiplayer games

Looking for recommendations on SPLIT-SCREEN local multiplayer games ie the screen split in half (50/50).

I have a giant projector and my friends and I want to play simple local multiplayer games on it, and not fuss around with different mobile device screens.

Any time I search for this, the results come up with MULTI-screen multiplayer games where each player has their own screen (whether online or offline).

CLASSIC EXAMPLE: Tetris

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4Luko42QTg

Another: SNES Mario Kart

So far, searching games in Google TV the only thing I found that does split screen is a checkers game.
