Onn media streamer 4K hub and adoptive storage

by paulsiu

I got the 4K one that is a square box. I like to see if I can upgrade the box to do the following:

  1. Add a passthrough powered hub since the unit has no expansion.
  2. Add a USB flash to increase the storage.
  3. May be add a controller?

I thought I could set it up to do some retro-gaming for the kids. Anyone tried this and does it work? Which device did you use?

Update I purchased SUYAMA USB OTG Adapter for TV Stick and use that as a hub. I then install a usb flash formatted in fat32. Exfat volume could not be mounted. The system reports the exfat as corrupted.

There are apparently ways to set up adoptive storage but since only usb 2 is supported this sounds like a bad idea. As an android game system this would not work due to a lack of storage. For a emulator it works fine since you can store all the roms on external drive and roms are small enough for a fat32 file system.

Add a passthrough powered hub since the unit has no expansion.

You'll need a OTG "Y" cable . Then you'll have a way to plug in power and a USB device. I've used these with a Mi Box S, FireTV Stick Lite, and a TiVo Stream 4K without any issues.

You’ll have to Google it a bit, last I checked this box needs some unconventional scripting to get external storage working

You can use regular external storage but cannot add external device storage. A simple powered micro USB hub will work with a drive attached. YOU also may be able to store the ROM's on a drive on your PC and share them over the network if your emulator app supports it.

I have Lemuroid on mine and have synced my PS4 Bluetooth controller. I run Kodi on my PC and stream the content to my ONN Android box. I used Solid Explorer to create an FTP server and then I transfer files to the device.
