Bye bye shield tube hello ftv4k max

by grakkos

So for a while now my Nvidia shield tube was becoming slow and had trouble with 4k content. Lately it would lock up playing 4k in YouTube and Netflix.

I talked with Nvidia and rma'd it. Got a new one last week. Felt a bit snappier and was able to play 4k in everything except plex.

It still stutters opening Netflix. It still redraws the home screen every other time I exit an app.

On Monday a friend came back from a trip to the states and brought me ftv4k max.

To my absolute surprise this 35$ (on sale) device feels snappier than the tube and plays 4k HDR on all my apps including plex from local and remote server with no issues.

I'm trying to figure out if the difference is due to the fact that the tegra has an amazing GPU but mediocre CPU, the fact that fireos is based on Android 9 without Google bloat or a combo of both.

But I know for sure that I won't recommend the shield, even the pro, to anyone unless they're game streaming , ever again.

I have a Shield Pro 2019 and it has no trouble with anything. Netflix flies. Kodi flies. Plex plays everything - 4K remuxes with Atmos and DTS MA lossless audio. I also have a FTV 4K Max and it is a nice device but it's no Shield.

I've been using my 4k max over my 2019 shield pro for the last week, and I have to say I love it so far. it's a lot faster then the regular 4k stick. gonna stick with it for a bit to see how it goes.

Zero issues with my shield i bought in 2015 and the current pro model. I would recommend it to everyone. FireTV is s horrible UI in my eyes

I would be surprised too. Never had any issues with the Tube with streaming services. No Amazon device feels snappy with that UI they use to me. I was a bit disappointed the Max wasn't snappier than it is. Crazy that you could have gotten two oddly functioning Tubes. Other than the 4k Remux issue It's really hard to tell the difference between the Pro and the Tube in everyday use. The Fire MAX is OK too.
