Best practices configuring GoogleTV?

So I bought a smart tv finally, Sony XR Bravia. It has Google TV running on it as the system. I feel like I'm missing something for a proper configuration.

Before it I just turned on a TV and selected a channel. For Netflix I just watched it over Amazon FireTV stick. I kind of expected from the TV that it would give me suggestions what to eatch based on the apps I installed or that I could have one common watchlist and recommendation algorhytm over all the apps I have.

What seems to happen is that if I'm in the starting screen (Google TV), I get mostly recommendations to watch for things from Amazon Prime, nothing from Netflix. Some movies getting proposed only with options to buy/rent them even though I'm sure they are free in other apps.

Like... what's the point if I have to look through the watchlists/catalogues of 4+ different apps separately anyway? Or am I missing something?

Steer clear from the Realme Tv Stick 4k, it sucks.

Nothing better than buying something and see 4 yourself that all the positive reviews all over the place are bullshit, right?

Tons of positive reviews and YouTube analyses later and I bought this to replace a dead fire stick.

Found out this thing is super slow. If you use just the preloaded apps it's fine, but after I install Abt 10 streaming apps it becomes unusable.i mean it literally. it freezes, takes a couple minutes to boot and too many seconds to do anything, I couldn't watch anything on it after installing a couple apps.

Btw the Google home configuration at 1st boot didn't work with anyone's phone here, it just crashes or hangs on for a long time until it returns an error.

It took about 40 minutes to complete the apps setup, which is curious, since the only apps downloaded were Deezer and Plex.

Limiting background processes to 2 (dev options) helps a lot makes it usable again, but still the thing is slow.

Want more reasons to avoid it? Controller doesn't turn the TV on, doesn't come with batteries, it comes with no power adapter, **the power cord is way too short ** (fire tv= 1.5m / this= 30cm), etc.

Want my advice? This is the worst piece of crap I've seen that's got a Google and netflix certification on it. Don't buy it.

The Amazon fire stick leaves this shit eating dust anytime, it's just way much faster and works fine, despite me thinking FireOS and the Amazon AppStore to be inferior.

EDIT:

Amlogic S905Y4 powers this thing, I didn't know it as there's very little info out there. It's a quad core a35 CPU (slower than the a53, which is already slow),

I little monitoring wnd i found that when idling the 4 cores are constantly maxed out at 2GHz.

The CPU struggles to do its job.

Google tv app missing remote

I have a tcl google tv and I downloaded the Google tv app on my phone and the floating remote does not show in the app, both are connected with the same network

Dear Google, kindly stop trying to force your junk bloatware on me after updates. It's mad annoying having to track down some toggle buried under five menus to turn off some spam that I don't want and didn't ask for that clutters my homescreen with a bunch of apps I don't use.

Mi TV Stick + USB-C Hub Docking Station Adapter

I am wondering if this would work? The Docking station has Power Delivery over USB-C which would solve the need for an external power source for Mi TV Stick (1st edition) but I would have to use USB-C to MicroUSB adapter to connect it directly to the TV Stick.

My main doubts are:

  • Will it provide power delivery (this Stick only needs like 1A @ 5V, so 5W is nothing demanding)
  • Will it have the full dock functionality (since MicroUSB is working at much lower speeds approx. 480 Mbs compared to USB-C @ 5Gbps). I am not planning to connect all the hubs but would like to test one of USB-A for remote control/keypad and Ethernet (even though it is limited to 100 Mbps, it would be enough and the connection would be much more stable than WiFi 5Ghz signal)

Don't want to advertise but this is the type of USB-C dock that I had in mind.

Xiaomi TV Stick 4k AFR support?

To those who got their hands early on the new Xiaomi 4k stick, could you please confirm if it supports automatic refresh rate switching in Plex?

I intend to upgrade from the old version (which does support AFR), and wanted to see if the 4k version supports it as well.

Remote Recommendations?

I have a TCL Google tv that comes with preset buttons for YouTube, Netflix, TCL Channel, and Amazon. Button Mapper doesn’t work on the preset buttons so the remote hasn’t been the most useful to me.

My most used apps are: HBO, Netflix, sling, Hulu, and Disney+. Any recommended remotes that would allow me to map to these apps? Also would like a fast forward button instead of having to push right on the D-pad an endless number of times since there is no way to scrub on the current remote.

I see a lot of people recommend the remote that comes with the Onn stick, but I haven’t seen anyone mention whether the preset buttons can be remapped or not?

Switch to google/android tv (idk if buying advice is the correct flag but i think is the most appropried)

I have a firestick and i dont feel good with the user experience, so i was thinking about switching to android tv, the thing is that i wanted to buy a new tv (possibly 4k), and my project was: buy any 4k tv and then buy a chromecast with google tv, but i was thinking about buying an android tv device and install the google tv launcher.

My worries are that i would spend too much money with the google tv option and the secondo option will not run smoothly as a google tv (interface and streaming).

Do you have any advice or tips to help me out.

Thanks for helping :)

Mi TV Stick 4k has bad volume?

While watching video (Netflix, YouTube and so on) via the Mi TV Stick 4k the volume is very low. I need to set my TV to 100% to hear it normally.

I disconnected the Mi-remote from my TV and set the Mi volume tot max. Now I can set my TV to a volume of about 20-25%.

But when watching the same content directly on my TV I can get a fine sound with only 10% volume.

Is this 'normal'?

MiTV Stick unresponsive

I have a MiTV stick and everytime I use it for an hour or so, the remote wouldn't be responsive. Sometimes even when I click just one time, it scrolls registers the click multiple times. Unpairing doesn't even work as when I unpair, it doesn't bring up the pairing screen after. It's been a hassle to restart the stick and/or bring up the phone app just to control the TV Stick. I also can't let my parents watch tv alone cause they wouldn't know what to do when the remote doesn't respond.

[Help] Removed bloatware (I thought) from my Philips TV, now the TV boots to recovery after 2 minutes

Hey,

I got tired of all the bloat and ADB:d into the TV to remove what I thought was only bloat. Apparently one of the philips apps i removed, either org.droidtv.playtv , org.droidtv.nettvrecommender , org.droidtv.nettv.market , org.droidtv.eum , org.droidtv.demome are the culprits I would gess. Anyone that knows where to find them so that I can adb them back? Tried updating firmware through recovery but those apps are still missing, resulting in the tv crashing to recovery after 1-2 mins. I read that these apps were safe to delete so it should'nt be causing problems. Also removed:

com.google.android.youtube.tvmusic

com.amazon.amazonvideo.livingroom

com.apple.atve.androidtv.appletv

com.google.android.youtube.tv

And a few other apps that could be uninstalled in normal android storage. Any expert that could give me some advice? I also cannot acces sources, so something with the tv is off

ONN UHD Hardware modification

Tldr anyone know of a source for internal photos/schematics for the onn uhd 4k box?

--Edits-- Link to some decent resolution photos: album

Link to rom chip spec sheet datasheet

Fcc listing for the bt wifi: linkydink

--_-

So I have a couple of these lil guys floating around, and I don't have any problems with them doing their stated purpose.

That said I wouldn't mind tinkering tweaking and repurposing one of them with a bit more utility (more storage, I/O, etc)

I'm wanting to add a battery pack and potentially an SD card of sorts (USB to card is fine) but in looking for schematics/diagrams, internal photos, teardowns, hell anything came up fruitless.

Any idea of plausibility in adding a dedicated power connection thus freeing up the otg connection, I'd prefer to NOT have a host cable, taped to a hub, hot glued to a lipo battery. At least not as a final version.

Audio and Video from different sources/apps?

Is it possible two get different sources for Audio and Video? By sources, I mean apps or casting.

Basically, I would like to cast audio while having a YouTube video playing, or the other way around.
Is this something Android TV can do, or is there no way of getting around the "one media source" limit.

For now, I am using a hardware solution, with my TV's app playing YouTube, while I am casting Audio to my Shield TV, with my AV-Receiver mixing the two.
While this works, it's a bit annoying to get running every time.

Dolby Digital Plus finally available on YouTube

I really don't know when this started to be supported but here's a video example with Dolby Digital Plus audio, Dolby Digital should also be supported of course but I still haven't found a video with it, please share one if you know of any.

AAC-LC 5.1 was already supported by YouTube but it seems to be available only on the Shield and select smart TVs.

Need some advice on streaming/play video from external source to an old tv

Good day fellow redditors,

my father has a very old smart TV (probably so old it doesnt even support apps, or at least i havent found any, but its got a browser) and increasingly often it wont be able to decompress video codecs, either not being supported, or just cause the tvs cpu just cant handle it.

i was looking into some "easy" kind of fix, like an upgradable dongle that can read pen drive/external hdds (you know, to not have the same problem in like 5y) or a streaming-like service from his PC (i saw many online, but they look hard to actually set up) that arent at 300$ like most, at that price hed just get a lappy for 250$ and call it a day, but its actually a waste of money and gear, since he only needs to see media on his TV, and nothing else.

Thanks for your help
