Buying a first device

by Nethermenn

Hi all!

I’m looking into buying my first android box / stick.

I’m looking into: Fire Stick 4K Max

Xiaomi TV stick 4K

Realme TV stick 4k

Google Chromecast

Nokia Streaming Box 8000

What do you guys recommend? Also other suggestions are welcome!

I’m from Europe by the way 🙂

If we disregard price for a moment the best device there is is the Nvidia Shield. If cost doesn't matter it takes the cake hands down.

For every other case I'd recommend the Chromecast with Google TV. I do also like the Mi Box S, however I'd only recommend it if it's available for a significantly lower price than the Chromecast.

The one device I would definitely avoid are Amazons FireTV devices. Absoluetly terrible UX imo.

ONN 4k box from walmart. It's a great device for $20....

You have choice between new Xiaomi TV Stick 4K and new Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max . That's best low budget devices! If you want to spend more don't look any further: nVidia Shield TV Pro 16GB (2019)

Xiaomi Mi Box S is old...

New Xiaomi TV Stick 4K stick advantages compared to Xiaomi Mi Box S:

  1. Mi Box S is a 3+ year old device which uses 5+ year old Amlogic S905X SoC. Xiaomi TV Stick 4K runs on Amlogic S905Y4 (which was introduced last year)
  2. Mi Box S does not have support for AV1, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos & DTS-HD; but the stick does.
  3. Mi Box S runs on Android TV 9 (originally 8.1). The stick runs on Android TV 11.

Realme 4K TV stick does not have support for Dolby Vision! MECOOL KD3 4K Google TV Stick: beware no mention of Dolby Vision support, only HDR10 & HLG

Fire Stick is running Amazon's forked Android, not Android TV and the UI is a mess and full of ads.

The best choice for an Android TV device is still the Nvidia Shield, as long as you plan to use it to the max though.

From the ones you posted above, I'd choose the Chromecast w/GTV if you don't plan on connecting anything to it, or the Nokia for its physical ports (this is what I have, FWIW).

It all depends on what you want to do with it. For just watching Netflix and YouTube you can choose virtually any of these.

I recommend the Chromecast with google Tv(your 4th option)

I have been using it for a few months now and I like it a lot.

Nvidia Shield, it's worth the high price tag

I think it depends on how much you're willing to expend, and what features your TV has. Like, Dolby Vision / Atmos, or HDR10 and stuff.
I got me a Realme TV Stick 4k recently on Aliexpress, i'm still waiting for it. I have a 4k HDR10 LG TV, so the Realme is the best option for me.

This should help you decide. I’d recommend the CCWGTV.

I have used mibox3, mibox s, Google cc with TV and now i use Nvidia shield pro most time.

I used it for iptv streaming online like Netflix, Prime etc..

Things very important for me:

  • 4k HDR, Dolby vision & Atmos.
  • USB port to Play videos from HDD drive

My advice is run away from the stick devices because they usually haven't a good processor.

Google CC is good and support Dolby vision and Atmos..

  • but it doesn't support Play videos from HDD.
  • And I don't like the Google TV Interface. The screen size is bigger than it should be and u can't adjust the picture size from setting.

I will prefer (Xiaomi box and TiVo stream 4k) over Google cc.

Keep in mind Mibox don't support Dolby vision & Atmos

right now I'm happy with Nvidia shield but tbh for a guy who's not interested in games it's not worth the price.

Save money for a shield it is worth it.

Personally, I'd avoid any device from a Chinese company.
