I really don't know when this started to be supported but here's a video example with Dolby Digital Plus audio, Dolby Digital should also be supported of course but I still haven't found a video with it, please share one if you know of any.
AAC-LC 5.1 was already supported by YouTube but it seems to be available only on the Shield and select smart TVs.

Playing purchased movies through YouTube also give me DD+. Not sure if this is new..
Hi i was casting movies from my yt library to my tv last night using ChromeCast & DD+ was working for all my purchased movies sounded great & it lit up on display screen Dolby D+ . Today it won’t work now I’m only getting regular DD Dolby Digital what they hay?? YouTube error ? Receiver error ? I’ve tried reinstalling the app powering everything off & on the usual methods to no avail .. help plz thank you
The same video plays in DD if your TV doesn't support DD+
