Looking for Kiosk-type mode using files from USB

I have to set up an Android TV as a Kiosk screen, just looping through a few images (or I could save them as a video, if that helps). The images are saved on a USB stick, and the TV may not be connected to wifi once in place - so I can't just direct them to load a URL in a browser.

Trying to find the best way to do this as automatically as possible. I can work out getting an app that auto-launches another app on startup, but not sure if there are any apps I can get that can start autoplaying files from a USB stick when opened. The best option I've found so far is to just use the media player, but that still requires someone using the remote to navigate to the right files and open them.

New Episodes Notification?

Does Google TV (the app or the os) have a way of showing some sort of notification when new episodes of shows in your watchlist are available?

I like the way Apple TV handles it where they will show up in the "watch next" row.

How to watch a movie stored on Google Drive?

I have some old home movies that I have stored on Google Drive and would like to be able to watch using my Google TV Chromecast.

What is the best method?

I was thinking Plex but it does not look like it will work without me putting a Windows box between Google Drive and Plex.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Edit: Doing some Googling on this and found one option might be to use Google Photos?

Sony Hardwired Internet Issues

I'm wondering if anyone else has had these issues.

At the beginning of the year I bought a new Sony X90J and so far I've loved it, minus one thing. For some reason that I've yet to figure out I will occasionally loose internet and the TV will state I'm offline. I have confirmed that I am in fact offline by opening any video streaming app and they all will state I'm offline and by trying to stream from my phone which will also NOT show my TV because it's offline. The quick simple fix is to hard reset the TV by holding the power button for 3 seconds, this effectively "reboots" the tv. Once the TV comes back up, I have internet and everything works as it should, again confirmed by streaming apps and by casting from my phone. So far this has been a random issue, it doesn't happen every day, in fact I can go about a week or two without it happening and I think the issue is fixed and then it randomly happens again.

The TV is hardwired to an 8 port Unifi switch, which is connected to the primary 8 port Unifi switch on an SFP port in my office closet, which is connected to my Unifi USG firewall. I'm using a basic /24 network with subnet 10.0.0.X, IP lease time is 1 day. I have multiple other hardwired devices and none of them have this issue. Actually, I have a PS4 and a Sony Soundbar both connected to the same secondary switch that the TV is connected to and neither of them loose internet connection. This seems like a software issue to me, but maybe I'm wrong. It seems like the TV is not renewing it's IP address or something.

Troubleshooting I've tried:

  • Made sure the TV's software is fully up to date.
  • Setting a static on the TV. - The TV will keep the IP address, but will still NOT have internet.
  • Assigning an IP at the Firewall. - The TV will pull assign itself a 169 IP instead of receiving the correct IP from the DHCP server.
  • Tried connecting a USB NIC and discovered apparently GoogleTV doesn't allow that.
  • Changed DNS settings. - This effectively changed nothing. I was using 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 and moved to 1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1.
  • Installed two Gigabit SFP ports on the Primary Switch and connected the Secondary switch to the primary via SFP port2 and connected the Primary Switch to the USG via SFP port1. This cleaned up my Unifi Controller software device section, but didn't fix the TV issue.

My next step is to install Kali Linux on a Raspberry Pi and monitor the traffic from the TV to try and see what is or is not happening. If anyone has stumbled across this issue before or can give me some direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

Good quality bluetooth remote with headphone jack and uSB-c?

Basically the title. I’m looking for a remote that offers USB-c to charge and a headphone jack to plug-in and listen to whatever is shown on the TV.

Does something like this exist? I want to use it with my Chromecast with Google TV, by the way :)

How to create shortcut to "audio out" menu? (shell/intent/Button Mapper)

Occasionally our TV and audio receiver don't play nice and we need to manually change the settings in the "audio out" menu. It's getting cumbersome to navigate the menus and I'd like to create a shortcut to the "audio out" menu.

I have the (pro) Button Mapper app and the tvQuickActions app and it seems like it should be doable using one of those, like using a shell command or intent, but Googling for instructions has proven fruitless.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thank you!

Noob question about finding free content on AndroidTV

I just purchased a Walmart Onn device this weekend for a non-Smart TV in a guest room, and so far its been great. One of the reasons I chose the Onn box over a Fire Stick was because of Amazon's cluttered menus with all of their app tiles and Amazon ads.

But I did like that Amazon has a nice big "Free" app tile displayed that takes you right to free content. I believe Roku has a fairly prominent menu choice for featured free stuff as well.

Is there anything similar with the Android menu? I'm not seeing an obvious or prominent "Free Stuff" menu choice on the screen. I can go right to the Tubi or Pluto apps for their free content, but is there a catch-all "Free Stuff" menu item on the main Android screen that I'm overlooking?

If you didn't get the update, make sure you have all app updates installed from the Play Store and reboot the device. You should then be able to add Google TV accounts.

Google TV Chromecast issues

Hey everyone. I bought a Chromecast w/ Google TV a while back. I have had non-stop Wi-Fi- problems with it. I have traveled the world and tried to connect it to different routers: same issue, different router. Definitely not a router problem. It’s a Chromecast problem.

Here’s the short of it:

I connect the Chromecast to Wi-Fi. It works fine.

Then, inevitably, the connection crashes. I see a red exclamation mark next to my profile (upper right corner). The internet connection says “Limited Connection”. Nothing works.

I have tried the “date/time” trick. It only removed the exclamation mark. The internet connection is still not working. I have tried restarting the router, unplugging the Chromecast, restarting the Chromecast.

In the past, I have had to do a factory reset to get it to work. However this is a very inpractical option because a) the issue persists after a while, and b) i have to reinstall all my apps.

Would appreciate any help - it’s getting really frustrating and I am hating it

Can't use remote to play/pause with built in Chromecast

Hello.

I just replaced my 1st gen Chromecast with a Onn 4k Android TV.

Although I'm using smart tube next, I noticed that if I cast something to the built in Chromecast the remote buttons don't work. I used to be able to play and pause with the TV remote on my 1st gen.

Is this normal behaviour?

It's time to retire Mi Box 3 (?) What to get next?

Hi,

I'm using Mi Box 3 (I'm pretty sure this was the model name back then) for last ~6 years.

I don't expect a lot from Android box. I don't have good TV and I'm using speakers from the TV. What I only care about are only few apps that I'm using: YT, Netflix, Twitch and Casting from PC.

I was perfectly satisfied with Mi Box all these years and I have usb hub for Ethernet cable.

However, after OS updates in recent months the experience is really sluggish and sometimes I cannot even use any app because after device goes to sleep then next time is not using Ethernet (because USB connection is interrupted) and it switches to WLAN and for some reason that works bad even though modem is 20cm away :)

I'm aware that device paid itself already and I want to check what is out there and can work better.

I'm out of this topic for last years so I've lost a track a bit. I was thinking about Nvidia Shield because that was even popular 6y ago, but I think it's a bit too expensive for my "limited" usage. I'm not planning on upgrading TV or sound soon so I can take whatever Android box seems stable enough for my needs.

Any suggestions?

(I'm researching myself of course and currently watching some videos for Mecool KM2, but still would want to hear more suggestions from you) Thanks

Any Onn android streaming box remote covers?

~~My parents can be a bit clumsy and they broke a fire tv remote. They’re enjoying their onn tv box so if I can’t fix the Fire Tv remote, I may buy another Onn steaming box.

Just looking for a case for the Onn remotes. I have a cool glow in the dark for my Chromecast Google tv remote.~~

Turns out the remote works and my parents just cannot figure out how to use the remote.
