Add Airplay natively on Android TV

I have an older Sony android TV model that just fell short of having Airplay 2 on there. Would there be a way to add airplay to it? Could I theoretically install the app and all the core services and have it work natively without any app? This is just a theory I have.

Advice.

Budget - around 100 NZD - 70 USD

Current TV set up

I have a "dumb" 1080p tv . I have the vodafone tv , got free from provider. This has the basic apps such as netflix , youtube , prime. However you can not sideload any apps , and there is no 'app store'. I also have a 2018 google chromecast that i use to cast sports streams , and movies etc. This however is quite laggy.

What i want to improve.

I dont mind the 1080p quality, however i dont want lag (chromecast) , i thought a box would reduce this as you are directly streaming from tv. I dont like the vodafone tvs closed ecosystem either.

What I want to do with the box/stick/dongle

I have heard that with these devices you can access a wide range of free content using something called iptv. I have reaserched Kodi and thought i would use this , however if there is a better media service you use let me know . I am a complete beginner to IPTV so looking for tips on how to set up a good ui with sports , movies and tv shows would be much appreciated. I may also use this for freeview and normal apps like spotify , youtube etc, but that is not the main use. I want a box that is fast , and doesnt lag that is my main concern.

Boxes i am thinking about.

TCL r646 Audio Only Mode

There is a way to turn off the screen while content plays over audio only. However, it requires numerous clicks to navigate. More while playing a video. How can this function be accessed more easily? Here is the built-in method to access. It sometimes shortcuts to the audio settings screen but that changing condition isn't necessarily a good thing.

Settings, Settings, Display & Sound, Audio, Advanced Settings, Audio Only Mode, (ok or wait 10 sec).

This translates to these button presses:

Settings button, down, down, ok, down, ok, down, down, ok, down, down, down, down, ok, down, ok.

I downloaded Smart Tube Next and that dramatically reduces the number of required clicks but only works in that app. I would like to use this in any app by accessing the TV's function. I cannot find a way to reach this function quickly. I want to map it to the Mute button on the remote since I pass through audio via toslink cable anyway.

I've dug through the file system and haven't come up with anything. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions and welcome discussion from others. The fact that this function appears in the YouTube replacement app, indicates that the developers deemed it to be a useful-but-omitted feature in the official app.

TV Remote Pair

My Remote feature works with the Chromecast plugged in but my TV (Sony Bravia 4k) won't pair directly with my phone. Could anyone point me to an article/video or any kind of fix? The error says "could not pair due to incorrect passcode" despite them matching.

Thanks!

The new remote is not region-locked!!!

Even if you don't have Google TV (or Google Play Movies & TV) app available in your country, you can use the new remote feature that's been recently added to the app.

I thought it was only available to the 14 countries the app recently expanded to.

Before going forward, make sure that on your TV:

  1. The Android TV remote service is updated to version 5.0
  2. Gboard is updated to version 11.0

Now, on your phone,

  1. Enable the Google TV (or Google Play Movies & TV) app from play store
  2. An update will be available after enabling (in my phone, the app updated from 4.25.14 to 4.28.46; for some people it got updated to 4.28.48)
  3. There will be a "TV remote" option in your phone's quick settings tile. Tap on it & the remote will open.
  4. If you're connected to wi-fi, it will automatically search for your TV & then you can pair it with a 6-digit passcode. (duh!)

Thanks to u/juzmafia & his post. The comment section is really helpful, too.

Some things to keep in mind:

  1. If you don't want to use the new remote, don't update the Android TV remote service to version 5.0. You can't use the old remote after the update.
  2. For some people, the remote didn't appear in quick settings tile immediately after the update; they had to restart the phone.
  3. Also for some people, tapping on the remote icon doesn't work, but tap & hold does.
  4. In unsupported countries, the app gets disabled automatically. You have to re-enable it each time to use the remote.

Edit 1: This is for Android phone/tablets only. For iOS users, the remote feature will be added to the Google home app.

Edit 2: I didn't sideload anything or used a vpn. The updates are all official ones from play store.

Edit 3: For some people, volume control disappeared after pairing. It's not the remote's fault, it's the TV's (which your android TV device is connected to via HDMI). Read here

Google Remote vs. older Android Remote

My Tivo Stream 4k updated it's remote services program, so the Android Remote Application no longer connects. Very disappointed with the new program, so if anyone has solutions for these problems, please let me know.

  1. Seemingly only connects via BT and not a network connection. Even though I'm only about 10' away it does not stay connected. Also it takes longer to connect. (To be clear-two separate issues, BT disconnecting and no network connection). Very annoying to have to wait for it to connect to just FF or REW. (Edit: It was connecting via wifi network, and will connect via BT also, but I think the "Adaptive Connectivity" function on my Pixel 4a was disrupting the wifi connection. Better with it turned off, but still not perfect. And BT only still will disconnect when in range.)
  2. If the phone locks with the remote program active and in focus you need to unlock the phone to use the remote app. That was the best part of the old program--avoiding the device locking. I set Smart Lock to keep the phone unlocked if connected to the Tivo Stream 4k, but since it doesn't stay connected (see #1) that doesn't work. The only other option I see is to lessen my security settings, which I don't like.
  3. To launch the remote I first have to launch Google TV app and then find the remote icon in that program. I have no other use for the Google TV app, so it's just an annoying extra step. (Edit: A settings shortcut button can be added as described below. Not quite as good, but it avoids launching the Google TV app.)

If anyone has workarounds for the above it would be appreciated. About the only advantage I've found in the new system is you don't need to enter a new passcode each time the app connects via BT.

If there are no fixes to these problems I've read I can just uninstall the update on the Tivo Stream 4k. Is there a way to keep it from reinstalling the update? (Edit: Yes, uninstall the remote update on the Tivo stick and go to Play to disable automatic updates.)

Cheapest device that plays Netflix UHD HDR

I can't get it to work on my laptop; I bought a 4k projector and upgraded my netflix subscription just for it. I'm done trying to find a solution; my laptop seems hopeless.

Bonus points if the solution also plays hevc encoded UHD remux files.

Everyone says get a shield, but they are really expensive in NZ. For the same price I can get a Mi Box S for Netflix and a Raspberry Pi 4 with libre elec for HEVC files

Dog afraid of Google Tv?

Okay, hear me out. We just switched out our old chromecast for the new ones with GTV.

Our dog suddenly can’t stand being in the living room, or our bedroom (where we also have one).

She is fine until we turn on the tv, and is terrified of the remote. Anyone else notice this? I’m assuming there’s a high frequency, but I just want to see if anyone else has noticed this!

So, it doesn’t work because this warning pops up constantly? That’s good to know.

Multi-Channel Audio via Apps (WiSA / eArc)

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I have a Sound Sphere WiSA 5.1 sound system connected to my Sony A90J.

When using streaming services like Netflix, I get proper 5.1 / Atmos sound, and I get a 5.1 signal when playing video files off of my laptop (I've used both Dolby test video and regular content).

However when trying to play the same files from an App (VLC, MX Player, Kodi) the audio only ever gets put through as 2 channels.

I've tried changing a bunch of setting, but am completely lost as to whether this is just not doable, is a TV issue, and app issue, or a Sound Sphere issue.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT: After resetting everything a bunch of times and toggling a million sound setting, enabling AC3 transcoding in Kodi seems to mostly be working. (I am fairly certain I tried this, but I may also just be an idiot. Will update if I find out more.)

Help getting adb connection to Hisense TV running Android 9

Solved it!

https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/pyo4sk/help_getting_adb_connection_to_hisense_tv_running/hfqvua9/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

I'm trying to get adb connected to this TV with the idea to remove some of the pre installed apps (Vudu, Pandora) so I can free up some storage.

The TV (H8G) runs Android 9 (Kernel Version 4.9.125). I enabled the developer menu, enabled the USB debugging option, and installed the adb package (I tried both under Windows and macOS).

I know the IP is the right one and can ping and find the TV with nmap so that's not the issue.

The error I get in macOS is

./adb connect 192.168.33.16
failed to connect to '192.168.33.16:5555': Connection refused

In Windows I get more details

unable to connect to 192.168.33.16:5555: cannot connect to 192.168.33.16:5555: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. (10061)

Does anyone has any experience getting these TVs to connect to the debugger?

I don't have a USB cable with two male ends to try a USB connection and I don't feel like trying to find one if it is not going to work anyway.

Let me know if you have any ideas of what could be the issue.

Edit: I should probably add that I don't get a popup on the TV to authorize the connection, and I tried rebooting the TV a couple times as well (hold power until reboot option appears, choose reboot).

SmartTube Next what device can play 1080p+ @ 60fps in 2x speed?

Hi people, I have an s905x3 but it does'nt play well videos in 2x speed @ 60fps, I get o a LOT of frame drops and jerkiness, I use a preset to only play at 30 fps to play well, but I want to buy a new device, since YT are stopping having videos converted to 30fps in 1080p or 4K...

Audio from Nvidia shield to amp, probably doing something wrong...

I've been having this weird sound issue, where in the content if it's just ambient sound or overall silent scenes the output completely cuts out. Sometimes it isn't a big deal, but most of the times it's very apparent. I think it may have to do with my setup, but I'm not sure (could be hardware fault), so hopefully someone here can help me with this.

At the moment my sound setup is the following:

Nvidia shield -> hdmi cable -> TV -> headphone output 3.5mm to RCA cable -> amp (Yamaha A-S701)

The TV is one of those cheap Toshiba, so I don't know if that can affect the audio quality. I already tried replacing the hdmi cable, but that didn't work. I can always try to replace the 3.5mm to RCA cable, that could be at fault, but since I don't understand much about audio maybe there's something in this setup that's clearly wrong? Should I try to get one of those hdmi splitters and connect through optical (the amp has optical input) so it doesn't go through the TV?

Help is appreciated, thanks!

Mi TV Stick audio cut

Hello. I bought some days ago a Mi TV Stick. I have a big, big issue. When I play a movie or a tv series sometimes the audio cuts out. It's very annoying, especially because it cuts people talking. I have this issue only on movies or series, I assume because of low volumes level. But I don't understand if it's the tv i'm using or the stick itself
