needed Android tv / assistant feature: find my remote

I assume other devices besides the Nvidia shield have a find my remote feature built in, but it doesn't do one much good if one can only access it via the menu system. Google really needs a "find my remote" much like "find my phone" that cam trigger the find my remote function in these devices.

It can be done if one runs their own home assistant installation, but this should be built in.

Not sure where to find help, but there are too many damn TVs in my apartment complex...

I live in student housing and every single apartment has the same smart TV. I'm trying to cast from my phone to my TV but it's not listed among the available devices. I gave it a specific name so I could differentiate it from the others, but that specific name is not on the list. Is it possible that there is too many devices available and my TV is getting bumped?

It's a Skyworth TV, but I don't know anything about it. Sorry if this is wrong place, but figured ya'll might be the smartest group to ask

Playing All 4 content on Android TV

Hi. I don't know if i've found something bizarre here of if this is by design.

I have a Chromecast v3.

All4 have not released a TV App yet unlike every other provider.

You can sideload the phone app but you need an Airmouse style remote.

My wife found this by accident:

Hold the voice search button down

say: "play married at first site season 6 episode 13" (apologies about the content, I just know this one works)

Voila, All4 ident plays followed by the noted episode. If you use your phone to review names of content and say them prefixed with "play" it will mostly find the All4 content.

If you don't use the "play" prefix, it will do a general search, mostly coming back with All4 on YouTube.

Any idea how I'm searching and playing All4 content natively yet there's no app that can do it neatly?

Cheers,Michael D

Question on Android TV Remote Service through Google Home / Quick Access

I just downloaded the Android TV Remote Service 5.0 on my Android TV (Sony BRAVIA X850C, Android 8.0).

Previously, I'd occasionally use Sony's remote app (TV & Video Sideview) on my phone, and that still works, but in reading the Android TV Remote Service description, I read that I could control my TV through the Google Home App and Android Quick Access menu on my phone.

The option to integrate the remote with Google Home / Quick Access sounded pretty appealing to me, since I use the quick access menu a lot to manage house lights. However, when I opened the Google Home app or added the TV to the quick access menu and tap on it, all I see is volume controls. I don't see a full "remote" in there at all, like per the screenshots shown on Android TV Remote Service Google Play page.

Am I missing something here? Do I need any other app on my phone to utilize the Android TV Remote Service on my phone through Google Home or the Quick Access / Home Control menu?

Thank you!

Streaming 4k with Kodi on Hisense 55U68G

Getting a bit specific here. But has anyone tried streaming 4K with Kodi on a Hisense 55U68G or 50U68G?

Just wondering if the play back is smooth, that way I can avoid buying a shield.

I have an old LG that, who’s motherboard was tossed in the oven to fix it. But she’s still kickin’. So I was contemplating getting a sheild to future proof my streaming.

But Seeing how cheep the Hisense is I think I’m better of just upgrading… if it can do what I ask.

Thanks for you help!

Swapped from dodgy Android box to the new Chromecast Snow - Superior experience

Well it should be obvious that actual Android TV would be better than a crappy rebadged normal android experience pretending to be android TV, but even from a hardware experience, the Chromecast seems better, runs smoother, its a better experience overall.

I've seen the older Chromecast and just didn't like the only casting option. Now that it has AndroidTV built in this is a great little piece of kit.

And yes I could still sideload that handful of dodgy apps I use, but even beyond that I would have to recommend ditching the dodgy boxes and going true Android TV.

Same price more or less, better experience overall.

Hisense TV won’t turn on

My hisense tv won’t come on. This has been happening since earlier today like around 3. Every time I unplug it and plug it back in, the red light blinks as if it’s trying to come on but then it just won’t come on. I’ve had this problem in the past with this tv. I’ve had this tv for about a year. What should I do ? Unplugging it doesn’t seem to work☹️

What's going on with Play Next?

I've had my Hisense A6G for 6mos now. So far the only content showing in the play next row is Disney+. In the settings, I've chosen all apps to show their content, but nothing has changed.

Has anyone had luck with anything other than Disney showing up?

My CCwGTV works better, but still needs work.

Age-restricted content does not play when signed in as a "Brand" account.

I've been using my "anonymous" brand account for a long time on all my devices. All content has always played. But on my Sony X900H TV, it just gives an error that it can't play age-restricted content. Is Google/YouTube ever going to fix this long-standing issue with Android TV?

Is Android TV right for me?

I've been using Kodi on a Raspberry Pi for a few weeks and am not a fan. It's buggy, has a tacky interface, and is an absolute hassle to get normal streaming apps to work (can't even get Netflix). I'm thinking of opting for a fire stick or an Android tv box.

The main things I'm looking for include: good support for common apps like Netflix, Disney+, YouTube. A remote. The ability to load unofficial apps like stremio, or even Kodi; although I said it's not great, having Kodi as an option for shows not available on the streaming services I have would be nice (also I already bought realdebrid). Good casting support.

I'm very tech savy so I don't mind tinkering with the product a bit to get it to where I want. If I got a fire stick my first step would be removing all the bloatware anyways.

So does Android TV fit my use case? Or should I opt for fire stick or something else?

Edit: removed the link apparently that box isn't certified. I do want apps designed to work on tv

Edit2: why are all the certified boxes more expensive and only 2gb ram? Why wouldn't I opt for the more powerful device that also lets me add an sd to it for more storage?

Edit3: Thanks for the help everyone. I'll be going with the Walmart onn.

Any effective place for AndroidTV feedback? How Android pushed me to Apple TV

I have a Sony A9G and I’m told by r/Bravia moderators that Sony has no control over AndroidTV pushing ads (although I’m not totally convinced). It really pisses me off I can spend thousands on a TV and must be served ads I don’t want, to the point where I may not buy my favorite TV brand next time. I’ve gone to using my Apple TV 4K recently, after a year of being annoyed by those ads.

Is there a feedback page or other place where complaints have the most likelihood of convincing Android they need to let customers opt out? I’d rather be using just the TV without a streaming box.

Apparently, the new Android/Google TV remote app is actually REGION LOCKED

..and Google's decision to release Android TV Remote Service v5.0 which caused the old Android TV remote app to stop working was not thoughtful.

In my
previous post I've mentioned that the new remote app was not region locked but i was wrong.

As we know that Google TV app is only available in very limited countries but what i didn't expect is that even Google Play Movies & TV app is only available in selected countries(~117 countries).

Due to that, Android/Google TV users that are not in supported country won't able to use the new remote app. Even though they can sideload/enable the app on their mobile but at some point it will be disabled automatically especially after reboot unlike the old remote app that can be used without any region restrictions.

Another group that are also affected is iPhone/iPad users. According to Google, the new remote feature will be available via Google Home app but unfortunately till today it is still not available.
###Workaround So for those who are affected by Android TV Remote Service v5.0 update or prefer the old remote app, you can downgrade the app to v4.7 on your Android/Google TV device:

  1. Go to Playstore settings and set Auto-updates to Don't auto-updates apps.
  2. Find Android TV Remote Service on Playstore or at settings>apps>see all apps>show system apps and uninstall updates.
  3. Download and install Android TV Remote Service v4.7.

Now you can continue to use the old Android TV Remote app.
Do note, this workaround will only work if the pre-installed version of Android TV Remote Service is lower than v5.0 or until Google 'allows' it.

For those who has your phone rooted and prefer the new remote app, can try the following workaround shared by XDA's Editor-in-Chief, Mishaal Rahman on Twitter: https://twitter.com/MishaalRahman/status/1441552412716802049

What are some of the good 55-65" AndroidTV/GoogleTV options under 600$?

Hey guys. I have the Hisense 50H8F that I bought about 1.5 years ago. And I have two main problems with the TV, the size and backlight performance. 50" is just small for me and local dimming on this TV sucks. It's juuustt tooooo sloooowww. I can literally SEE the white glow everywhere and I can watch it light up and dim down because it takes forever to do that (actually it takes about a second, but one second while watching movies is too noticeable).

I was wondering if there were any good options for me in about 500-600$ price range with 55" or 65" size and decent local dimming capabilities (or just more dimming zones).

And also, obviously, it has to be AndroidTV (or preferrable even the new GoogleTV), I cant use any other OS and that's why I am posting this here.

Please help me find something. Thanks.

Zank Remote Substitute For Google TV Remote?

The connection issues for the new Google TV remote have been driving me nuts. I found Zank Remote as an option, but didn't find anything on it here. You basically need to install this app on both your Android/Google TV device, then turn on USB debugging (still figuring out whether that should bother me), then install the app on your phone.

The interface has a lot of options which I need to research more fully. Buying the ad free version costs $6. It still requires using Smart Lock, unlike the old Android Remote app. Oh, and when you install it on your phone it is called Android Remote in the apps area, not Zank . . ..

Has anyone else tried/used it? Unlike the other remote apps this one does not rely on the Google remote services installed on your Google TV device, so it continues to work.

QWERTY keyboard vs. ABCDEF?

Hi y'all, I bought a MiTV 4A a couple of days ago and one of the most annoying things of it is the keyboard layout. GBoard is installed with the Alphabetical layout instead of the usuale QWERTY we are all accustomed to.

I tried installing a newer version of GBoard trough AptoideTV but it seems it's not working (maybe it works using a mouse but it won't work with the remote )

So I wanted to know if you guys found a way to get a working QWERTY layout that works with your remote or just gave up and went with abc...

Thanks!
