Google Remote vs. older Android Remote

by Goodspike

My Tivo Stream 4k updated it's remote services program, so the Android Remote Application no longer connects. Very disappointed with the new program, so if anyone has solutions for these problems, please let me know.

  1. Seemingly only connects via BT and not a network connection. Even though I'm only about 10' away it does not stay connected. Also it takes longer to connect. (To be clear-two separate issues, BT disconnecting and no network connection). Very annoying to have to wait for it to connect to just FF or REW. (Edit: It was connecting via wifi network, and will connect via BT also, but I think the "Adaptive Connectivity" function on my Pixel 4a was disrupting the wifi connection. Better with it turned off, but still not perfect. And BT only still will disconnect when in range.)
  2. If the phone locks with the remote program active and in focus you need to unlock the phone to use the remote app. That was the best part of the old program--avoiding the device locking. I set Smart Lock to keep the phone unlocked if connected to the Tivo Stream 4k, but since it doesn't stay connected (see #1) that doesn't work. The only other option I see is to lessen my security settings, which I don't like.
  3. To launch the remote I first have to launch Google TV app and then find the remote icon in that program. I have no other use for the Google TV app, so it's just an annoying extra step. (Edit: A settings shortcut button can be added as described below. Not quite as good, but it avoids launching the Google TV app.)

If anyone has workarounds for the above it would be appreciated. About the only advantage I've found in the new system is you don't need to enter a new passcode each time the app connects via BT.

If there are no fixes to these problems I've read I can just uninstall the update on the Tivo Stream 4k. Is there a way to keep it from reinstalling the update? (Edit: Yes, uninstall the remote update on the Tivo stick and go to Play to disable automatic updates.)

Isn't there a shortcut tile for it in your statusbar pull down?

Are you using an Android phone. The new remote uses Bluetooth for initial setup like all Google Home devices but it's on the network afterward. I have a nice icon right in the notification shade. I had to add it with edit. I didn't populate automatically. I don't know whats going on for you. I'm finding this remote to actually be something I don't mind using.

  1. You can always uninstall updates of Android TV remote service to use the old remote app. Turn off auto-update in play store.
  2. The new remote connected via Wi-Fi for me. Not sure what issue you're facing.
  3. As u/f1vefour explained, the new remote should be available in your quick settings/status bar tile.

Can anyone explain to me like I was five, HOW THE HECK am I supposed to get a remote for my Mi TV Stick? I think I may be to old for this. I just can't... Recently discovered that I had to enable Play Movies, but i only got movies there, no remote...

Any suggestion to iOS?

Edit: I've given up and am now trying the Zank Remote app--I started a separate thread on it here. So far, so good, but I've hardly used it.

I'd try the uninstall update thing, but I have some hope that my phone soon updating to Android 12 will fix some of the issues I've been having.
