Cheapest device that plays Netflix UHD HDR

by Noedel

I can't get it to work on my laptop; I bought a 4k projector and upgraded my netflix subscription just for it. I'm done trying to find a solution; my laptop seems hopeless.

Bonus points if the solution also plays hevc encoded UHD remux files.

Everyone says get a shield, but they are really expensive in NZ. For the same price I can get a Mi Box S for Netflix and a Raspberry Pi 4 with libre elec for HEVC files

Chromecast with Google TV / Netflix bundle from the Google Store. $89.99, including $83.94 of Netflix credit.

Why would you want two devices (mi box s and raspi) instead of just one? Imo you've sprung for a good projector which probably means you're a person that cares for high quality tech. Also, having a projector must mean that you have a decent dedicated home theater room or section. I also think you either have a good sound system to match or have plans for it. Why stop there and skimp on a streaming device of high quality? I'd go for an apple TV or shield TV.

Based on your requirements:

1.) HEVC UHD Remux

2.) 4K Netflix capable

3.) Something cheap.

I suggest you get a Chromecast with Google TV. This is the model with the remote. Its around ~$50 USD. And yes, you will have Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos(LOSSY), HDR10, HLG10 codecs supported. The only downside of this is it doesn't support TRUEHD atmos codec. Thats why i went for nvidia shield pro.

Hope this helps!

Between the Onn and the Google TV I would spend the extra money and go with Google, guaranteed OS updates.

If you want the CHEAPEST device that can do those things, then Walmart onn 4k or tivo stream 4k. The tivo can also do dolby vision

Less cheap would be what everybody else recommends, the Chromecast with Google TV

Retail Netflix 4K/HDR certified androidtv devices :

*most the devices are Amlogic powered, missing AFR, missing TrueHD support, missing DV support. *few devices showing made for New Zealand; should be able to order the devices that are made for Australia, China, India, South Korea, or Taiwan and get reasonable shipping rates.

I like your idea of getting multiple devices, but would not go with the Pi4 for best local 4K/HDR/HEVC playback, I would rather get the Hardkernel Odroid C4 (own an N2) or the new Radxa board with S905Y2 chip, both fully supported in CoreELEC (a fork of LibreELEC , a minimal Kodi Linux distro specifically for Amlogic powered devices). The Amlogic dev boards make better media players than Pi's; the Raspberry Pi4 would make a better Retro-Emulation box or secondary/educational mini PC.

Did you play it on Edge or the Netflix Windows app?
