Time for a new Android TV box to replace my MeCool M8S PRO L that is nearly 3 years old ....

and still running android 7 Nougat. I can tell its fading and not keeping up.

So what Android TV box out there is super cheap, is rooted, runs Android 11 ( or will get Android 11 and 12 etc ) has around 4GB ram / 64GB rom and I dont need DRM netflix since I just use KODI, iptv etc ?

oh and great cooling is top importance too, I dont want to run fans just for a box. I dont play the heat producing game stuff just watch tv. Oh and a good remote that doesn't need that mouse toggle app something more modern than that setup.

Any reccomendations ? and why ? prefer 50-70 bucks range

Numbering of tv-channels

Hi,

I have a TCL 50CL71 running AndroidTV 9.

I hardly ever use it to watch TV, so I did not care about it too much, but now I have noticed that the numbers that are assigned to the various channels have gaps.

So for example I have channel 1, channel 2, up to channel 6, but then the next channel number is 11.

I can manually edit channel 11 and assign a new number to it (7 say) but I wonder if there was a way to automatically renumber all channels to simply assign increasing numbers without any gaps...

Is there a way to do that and how come there are gaps in the first place?

Many thanks!

Sudden restart of MiBox 3 on Android 9

Hello everybody.

I've been having this problem for over a year now. You see, when I'm playing a video from external storage on MX Player, all of the sudden, the MiBox restarts. It's completely random. One time, I did a factory reset, installed the few apps I use and the very next day, restart in the middle of a video. But another time, after several reinstalls, the MiBox lasted 4 weeks without restarts.

I tried everything to fix this:

1.- Different versions of MX Player: official and modded versions, old, new, different settings, you name it. Different video players work but they're crap next to MX, they don't have the functions I need. I don't use versions past 1.32 because there are a couple of implementations they did I don't like and it's impossible to change them on TV, only in mobile devices.

  1. Allow and block internet access: for some reason if I disable WiFi the MiBox lasts longer without restart than connected. But eventually it always restarts. I tried third party apps to block internet access for MX Player but the app breaks, it doesn't work either.

  2. Lots of factory resets: mostly after system updates. With the last one I think the MiBox starts a little faster but the apps work the same.

I don't do streaming so I only connect to the internet so the MiBox sets the right time. That's it. I unplugged it when I don't use it because it keeps the light of the portable HDD on, and it really bothers me.

And the MiBox is not overheating as some people suggest is the case with the restarts. The room is cold and I touched the device several times, it's perfectly fine while playing content.

Anybody has a suggestion???

Thanks in advance.

Are features supposed to be all over the place?

I have a Mi box S (or mi box 4k in other regions), and all features seem to work sometimes and not other times. I connected a speaker to the tv, and I could control volume with android tvs volume control - next time it did nothing and even muted still made sound. I used an external HDD to play media files - next time it did not recognise it. Is this anyone elses experience? Why doesnt it provide a consistent feature set? Am i doing something wrong?

Extending time out on ambient mode /screen saver

Apologies if this has been asked previously, I've looked and found similar questions but not this aspect.

I've downloaded a screen saver app, Aerial Dream, which is awesome by the way, but this problem exists for both this app and ambient mode.

I can change how long the screen saver /ambient mode take to start, but I can't seem to change how long it stays on for, after about 10 minutes my screen goes to the 'no Hdmi input' screen. (using dongle)

I've tried changing the 'energy saver' setting but this doesn't seem to work, is this supposed to be the setting or is there another one I'm missing?

Open movie file on TV and see this weird glitch

Hello. I tried to watch this HDR movie file (hdr 10bit) on my TV (USB drive to sony x90j) with both native media player and VLC, but I saw this weird green pixels glitch like this on the entire screen (audio and subtitle were okay though). I tested playing the same movie file with VLC on my pc again and it worked fine.

Note that in the past I watched 1080p and other HDR movies without any problems. So I'm quite confused and don't know is the problem here. How can I fix it? Thank you.

PS5 controller headphone jack mutes TV

When hooking up a PS5 controller using USB, the headphone jack on the controller causes my Sony X90J to redirect audio, and there seems to be no setting that would allow the audio to be directed back to speakers. There are only 2 options: 'TV Speakers' and 'Audio System' and neither one works. Anyone able to get around this? I'm on Google TV 10 with a pair of bookshelf speakers connected using optical jack.

Edit: fixed it by actually plugging in headphones to the TV. They don’t work as toslink seems to take priority over the headphone jack, but it prevents the usb controller from stealing audio

Fixing automatic resolution downswitching on Android TV

This isn't actually a question, but all the threads I found when looking for an answer were archived, so I'm taking the liberty to just post my own answer in a new thread, so that hopefully it helps someone.

The problem is apparently ROM-independent, but may be Android version-dependent, as some people mentioned downgrading or upgrading as a solution. My ROM is a "Vortex" custom ROM, I believe Android 9.

Anyway, the issue is that selecting 4k for screen resolution in the Android settings will only hold for a period of time — until you either restart the box or it goes into sleep mode and is woken back up. It then reverts to either 1080p, 720p, or 480p apparently — in my case it was simply 1080p60 each time.

There are suggestions to enable "automatically select best screen resolution," but it seems that — like me — if you have this issue, that selector is greyed out.

There are also suggestions to enable HDMI-CEC, which I found odd, as HDMI-CEC AFAIK doesn't have anything to do with negotiating screen resolutions — that's what EDID is for. Unsurprisingly, this didn't have any effect on my box.

What DID work for me was disabling Dolby Vision in the Android settings. I'm not even sure my TV supports Dolby Vision, though I believe it might (it's an old LG B6 OLED). But either way, not only does this fix the automatic undoing of my screen resolution configuration, it also enables me to select the "automatically choose best resolution" setting — but I haven't enabled that — and to enable resolutions above 2160p30. Previously, with the issue existing and Dolby Vision enabled, the max I could select was 30 Hz 4k. I can now select 60 Hz 4k.

So, just to share this finding with any one of you that may be in the same boat, or any one in the future Googlefacing for this problem. Try disabling Dolby Vision and see what happens.

Cheers, Daniel

New Onn 4K box - can’t install Prime Video app because it’s allegedly incompatible

I just bought one of those $30 Onn Android TV boxes to replace the CCwGTV that I’m sending to my parents to replace their aged Apple TV 3G. Everything seemed to be going fine, more or less, until I tried to install the Prime Video app. I couldn’t find it in the Google Play store so I did a voice search for it and found it that way. The problem is that it says that it’s incompatible with my device. Huh? I did all of the system updates on the box when I first plugged it in and it’s running some version of 10, not 10.5 (which I understand is the current release of the OS).

I did a search online and the best advice that I could find was to clear the two caches for the Play Store; I did that but it didn’t make a difference. How on Earth do I install the app? Can I sideload it via a USB stick, OTG through the USB micro port? Is there something else I need to do?

Apps not working on Aptoide TV

I just got a brand new beautiful Sony Bravia TV and I just downloaded Downloader and AptoideTV

Some of the apps that I'm downloading work great, but there are apps that say they are compatible with my TV but when I download them, I can only see a rectangle of the app and I end up just uninstalling it.

Some of these apps seem to have worked on my old Vizio TV but it just seems like the proportions are all screwed up when I try to run the app.

I would include a picture but I don't know how to include one on here. I was wondering if anybody else had any trouble downloading apps from Aptoide TV that did not work appropriately on their Android TV? Thank you so much everybody

Thoughts on this box?

I was looking for a cheap TV box to play movies off a USB HDD and to watch IPTV. Found this one for 55€ and it's got the S905X3, what do you guys think?

I know people will recommend the Mecool KM2 but it's 25€ more than this one. Yeah it has Netflix certifications and google certified but I don't really care about that, I'm just gonna use it for IPTV and VLC

New Android/Google TV Virtual Remote feature finally working

Manage to get latest Android TV Remote Service v5.0 app that is required for the new remote to pair with Android/Google TV device.

For those who haven't received the update, can download the app from here:
https://gofile.io/d/sWYdxf
Or https://archive.org/details/android-tv-remote-service-v-5.0 (alternative download link)

[VirusTotal Analysis]

Download and install the app on your Android/Google TV device. Once installed, the old Android TV remote app can't be used unless the update is uninstalled.

Also make sure to update GBoard app to v11.0. (Should be available now via Google Playstore)

Edit:
Looks like Google will retire the old remote app because the app no longer appear in search results on mobile Google Play Store.

Also the new remote is not region locked.(more info)
It is available on both Google TV and Google Play Movie & TV app.

To access the new remote on your Android mobile:-

  1. On Google TV app, via Qucik Settings Tile or in app remote icon
  2. On Google Play Movies & TV app, only via Quick Settings Tile

In some case, you might need to update the app to v4.28.48 first and then manually add the remote tile to Quick Settings.
