Turn sound off on ambient mode?

When setting up my new tv I thought it asked me if I wanted sound on when the tv went into ambient mode, but can't find the setting for it now. I find the sound in ambient mode unbelievably loud and intrusive. I'd much prefer no sound.

Thanks

Cannot find Talkback on Android TV 10

I just purchased a Philips TV (model 50PUS7906/12) for my blind father, specifically for the Talkback feature on Android TV. I ordered it online, so I couldn't check, but my friend with an older model has that feature.

I went through every menu for an hour and couldn't find the feature. Every guide tells me to go to the Accessibility menu, then the Captions or Talkback submenu, but I don't have those on my TV. I went to Play Store and installed the Android Accessibility Suite, which shows a screenshot of that menu, but it still doesn't appear on my TV.

I'm thinking that this is an issue with Android TV 10 and that I should return the TV for an older model with Android TV 9. Does anyone have a better idea?

Looking for faster device than the 4K Amazon Fire Cube 2nd Gen

Hey everyone, new here so forgive me If I am in the wrong place. I have been using the 4K Amazon FireTV Cube Gen 2 (one upstairs and one downstairs) with Kodi 19.1 with Seren as my primary add-on of choice for TV and movies. I am also using Arctic Zephyr Reloaded at this time but have tried skins like Cosmic, Arctic Zephyr, and similar. I find that upon opening Kodi, no matter what skin, there is about 2 minutes of wait time for all the AutoWidget widgets to load and such. I experience no lag with playback but the interface usage is like a 3/5 in terms of smoothness and ease for mostly all skins with configured widgets. Loading universal searches and things takes about 1-2 min regardless of skin choice too. (obviously with my PC this is all nearly instant). I see for benchmarks that the Amazon Fire Cube 2nd gen and the Shield 2 are reeeeally close in performance.

Is there any off brand device, recommendations for devices, or anything of the sort that you guys recommend for a smoother, faster user interface experience particularly for Kodi? Looking to keep it in the realm of a portable box/stick/device of the sort (laptop / desktop to go isn't as idea).

Thanks.

Best device for just Plex and YouTube?

I have a Shield on my main TV that’s great, but I want to add a TV and streaming device in front of my exercise bike. I will only use Plex and YouTube (Premium), at 1080p or less. Budget is $50, or hoping to keep it under $40 on Black Friday.

Desires:

  • Good remote - voice assistant, a YT button and a button that can be programmed for Plex, remote with headphone jack is intriguing.
  • Home Screen - I want an ad free home screen that will give me decent suggestions from YT and Plex. I am willing to do some jailbreak type stuff for different launchers, as long as it’s stable and I don’t need to keep fixing it every couple months.
  • Responsive - as good as the Shield I would hope.

Available devices:

  • Onn UHD - seems well rounded, how’s the responsiveness?
  • Google TV - being Google makes me assume it’s the king of this category, but is it?
  • Roku- I am intrigued by the remote with headphone jack, do any others have this? I also read Roku will be losing the YT app soon if they can’t come to an agreement with Google
  • FireStick 4K - good for jailbreaking right? I have a minor preference for Google assistant to Alexa, do you get Google after jailbreaking?
  • Other - suggestions?

Thank you for your help

Questions about my Android TV

OK, got this device a couple of days ago - but am running into several issues.

  1. Many apps not available on Android TV platform that are available for regular Android. e.g. Speedtest.net
  2. When I install apks for 'regular' android apps (e.g. speedtest.net) it thinks the DPI is wrong or something, and shows mostly a black screen with a little sliver of an image. I can't see where the buttons are etc.
  3. UK TV apps - sideloaded iPlayer, connected via VPN. It works, but picture is incredibly jerky. As if it is trying to play at the wrong framerate or something. The All 4 app is doing the same as the speedtest.net app and showing only a sliver. My5 seems to work fine. ITV Hub won't play content. - And yes, VPN is working (via wifi only, not ethernet).

Aside from frustration #1, how can I deal with 2 & 3? Any thoughts?

Would an Nvidia Shield Pro (also running Android 9 Pie) have these same issues?

How do you remove Google Photos access from Android TV? Pictures taken from my phone and sync with my google photos acct can be easily accessed by saying "show me my photo" or typing "photos" with the remote. Its kinda weird that Ambient display allows you to select specific folders but my main camera roll is available to anyone that ask

Android TV upgrade for an old Italian CRT TV (CGE 12" B/W)

Hello everyone,

I am from Italy.

I've got an old CGE 12" B/W TV that I'm quite attached to because it has been with me since my childhood, I find it has a great design (even better than Algol's in my opinion) and, most of all, it has been drawn by my grandfather who worked as a technical designer at CGE back then.

When the UHF switch-off took place in Italy in 2011 I bought a DVB-T decoder with a UHF modulator in it. Now, since DVB-T switch-off is coming soon as well, I wanted to attempt something bolder to keep it working.

As far as I know my TV has been produced in the early 70s, it has no video input and has two 300ohms antenna inputs with proprietary socket (UHF and VHF).

Many years ago my grandfather had built a 75ohm coaxial adaptor with splitter for using the roof antenna, using his company's materials. Unfortunately that adaptor is in very bad conditions: its proprietary pre-wired connectors have the tendency to fall apart: luckily I found a couple of those for replacement at home and I used one for this project.

I thought to use the space for batteries (yes, it used to run on 12V batteries as well) for sticking in an Android TV box and an UHF modulator.

My idea was using the integrated modulator from my DVB-T decoder, which is going to become useless soon and is very tiny too. I wasn't able to find any schematics of it but a very generic one that I used to identify audio, video and 5V power inputs. Unfortunately I couldn't get the modulator working by those inputs alone, since it requires a couple more contacts (with some 3V between them) that might be necessary for tuning or something else that I ignore. So this required to use the whole logic board from my decoder, and its power supply as well, with huge space privation.

To be honest I found some modulators for sale, but this is a low budget project so I'd better arrange it with what I already have.

I wanted to use my decoder's native SCART inputs for audio and video but it wasn't possible because it required RGB signal and I only had composite one (standard AV): so I had to separate contacts between the modulator and the logic board for using them as I wanted to.

Unfortunately most of the space was gone for the modulator and the power supply, and very few was left for the actual Android TV: I chose an unbranded HDMI stick that I had to combine with one of those cheap horrible HDMI2AV converters.

For the UHF signal I found for sale some odd 300ohm-75ohm converters that, once tried, in two words, just work.

For connecting my modulator to the HDMI2AV I used one of those "DIY" contacts with screws at one side and a female 3.5mm (2p+g) jack at the other, which I connected a 3.5mm-RCA cable to. I had to use one connector only for audio because my modulator is mono and my TV has actually one central speaker only. I hope to solve this problem software-side.

Talking about power, luckily my decoder's power supply had a 5V output as well, so I was able to connect to it both the Android TV and the HDMI2AV. I connected the power supply directly to TV's 220V line (after the power switch) because it was easy, and also because in this way I would avoid any interference that I might get if connecting to TV's 12V line and using a DC/DC step-down to get 5V.

It was definitely not easy to stick everything into the battery slot but in the end I managed, and the result is working.

I'm not sure why, but the signal came way too bright on the screen, maybe because of the HDMI2AV converter, but I solved the problem with an app for adjusting brightness. I have to find a way to run it at boot.

I installed VLC and my national broadcaster's IPTV app and I am so happy with the result that I wanted to share it with you.

Total project cost: 40€, 30€ for the Android TV stick and 10€ for cables, converters and adaptors.

I still have to do software-side:

- mono audio: my Android TV seems not to have the mono audio option, so I can only listen to one channel so far, even if it's not a problem for most of applications;

- brigthness adjustment: I only found an app that actually works (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bluelightfilter&hl=it&gl=US): the issue here is that it can't start on boot so I have to manually start it and enable the option, and it is a little tricky;

- manual DNS setting: on static IP settings I can't modify DNS configuration to AdGuard DNS (it doesn't memorize it when I change it) so I have to use a third party app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.frostnerd.dnschanger&hl=it&gl=US) that I have to start manually like above;

- changing boot animation: I can't find those files I need to replace that any online guide I found talks about (/system/media/bootanimation.zip).

I hope I haven't get you bored with my post. In case, I haven't done it on purpose.

Here you'll find some pictures of the project: https://imgur.com/a/EZYIO4k

Voices are too low volume

Hi! I've just purchased a Mi box S TV box. I've been using an old desktop pc as a media player for my room for ages and now I notice that with this box when I watch a movie for example the audio in the dialogues has a very different volume than the other sounds. I find myself having to adjust the volume constantly because when actors stop taking, the movie sounds really loud.

Is there a way to correct this? This is really annoying and I'm actually considering returning the box if I there is no fix for this 🥺

I don't know if this is relevant but I connected the TV box to my 2.1 speakers via de 3.5 mm jack and it's the only way I can use external speakers (the TV's ones really suck)

Thank you!

Sony Bravia Ethernet connection.

Hi! I have a problem. I play a lot by streaming services with my tv. I play via GeForce now and Xbox xcloud and whenever i try to play by the cable not by wifi I have even worse experience... I tried with different cables already and nothing helped I think it is something wrong with my Ethernet module. For example on GeForce Now from time to time is losing like 10 fps and my game freeze for a second with Xbox cloud is even worse because it loosing connection every 2-5 minutes. By 5G wifi it go much better. I have 100mbps internet I read that using cable i will have less problem with streaming than wifi but it's opposite. Does someone have a similar problem? Or a solution? Best regards

Edit: i fixed some mistakes with vocabulary and grammar

Does chromecast with Google tv support YouTube 4k hdr content?

So my Nvidia shield 2017 has suffered broken down hdd and now all it does is display Nvidia logo and say quietly little "iiip iiip iiip" when powered up.

And now I'm on market for new Android tv box, because frankly the android tv experience in my Philips 55pus7272 is nowhere near the one that shield had. Yeah it does not support 4k hdr on YouTube and neither did shield, but at least shield didn't drop frames like crazy when trying to display anything over 1440p.

So now I'm trying to decide between the shield tv and chromecast with Google tv boxes or if I should fork out few extra euros for shield tv pro instead.

ONN 4k TV Box Remote Issue

I have a ONN 4K TV box running Android TV 10 and it has been working great. The issue recently is that the remote decides to pair and unpair itself constantly. I have tried to pair it through the pairing mode on the box (pressing the button on the front and holding down the home and back buttons on the remote). The issue with that is when it goes to pair, the stages at the bottom flicker from preparing to pairing.Has anyone had this issue as well? If so, what did you do to fix it.

I am running the latest firmware for the remote and the lastest update on the box its self.

UPDATE:

I have tried replacing the batteries and factory resetting to not fix. I did use my phone to check for updates. I used my phone to see if I could pair my phone with it (the remote). What appears to be happening is with the remote itself. The remote vanishes and reappears in the list of available devices on my phone. Is it worth trying to get a hold of customer service, or should I open the remote and see if any component needs to be resoldered? (I know how to solder and have a rework station with hot air)

VPNs don't work on my Android TV!

One of the reasons I got an Android TV was so I could use VPNs on them.

Tried 2 prominent VPNs. Both initially establish a connection, then within 5 seconds the TV reports Ethernet Connection is lost.

I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the ethernet cord. No luck.

Have you guys been able to get these apps to work on Android TV? It's a Hisense U6G if that makes a difference.

No problems using ethernet at any other time. Only these VPN apps causing the problems.
