VPNs don't work on my Android TV!

by FrugalRadio

One of the reasons I got an Android TV was so I could use VPNs on them.

Tried 2 prominent VPNs. Both initially establish a connection, then within 5 seconds the TV reports Ethernet Connection is lost.

I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the ethernet cord. No luck.

Have you guys been able to get these apps to work on Android TV? It's a Hisense U6G if that makes a difference.

No problems using ethernet at any other time. Only these VPN apps causing the problems.

It's an issue with android TV not the Vpns. It will work fine on wifi.

It's a popular issue since Android TV 9.0.

There's no real fix but only workaround:

  1. If your VPN app has split-tunneling feature then only enable apps that to be use with VPN.
  2. Try to 'refresh' DHCP by go to: settings>Network&Internet>IP settings>DHCP

Hopefully one of these work for you.

This isn't a networking issue, but an AndroidTV OS issue for some reason when a VPN connects it screw up the Ethernet connection. I have to physically unplug and replug the cable and then it's fine.

Been looking at an automated way of doing this no luck yet

You should buy a streaming device like Chromecast with Google tv.. I am using it. It works best with vpn

Nord VPN works OK on my Sony 4k😁

It simple to fix it, you guys need to go to split tunneling on your vpns options and block the app settingsand than all ethernet work with vpn connect ;)

I've been able to vpn with a hard wired internet connection on my desktop computer using Google Chrome Browser to my television's Chromecast.

I use WindScribe on my Shield with no problems. I'm guessing you are using free VPN apps? Try using a paid service instead.
