Questions about my Android TV

by FrugalRadio

OK, got this device a couple of days ago - but am running into several issues.

  1. Many apps not available on Android TV platform that are available for regular Android. e.g. Speedtest.net
  2. When I install apks for 'regular' android apps (e.g. speedtest.net ) it thinks the DPI is wrong or something, and shows mostly a black screen with a little sliver of an image. I can't see where the buttons are etc.
  3. UK TV apps - sideloaded iPlayer, connected via VPN. It works, but picture is incredibly jerky. As if it is trying to play at the wrong framerate or something. The All 4 app is doing the same as the speedtest.net app and showing only a sliver. My5 seems to work fine. ITV Hub won't play content. - And yes, VPN is working (via wifi only, not ethernet).

Aside from frustration #1, how can I deal with 2 & 3? Any thoughts?

Would an Nvidia Shield Pro (also running Android 9 Pie) have these same issues?

  1. It's up to the app developer(s) to release Android TV version of their app (in your case, there are some good alternatives, like Analiti or Fiber test)
  2. Yes, apps built for Android phones or tablets won't run on Android TV devices. You have to specifically download & install the Android TV version of the app (if there's one available)
  3. The iPlayer app was intended for Google TV devices (especially the Chromecast with Google TV), but it should work on any Android TV device. Download from here
  4. All 4 isn't available for Android TV yet ( see here for details). Same thing with ITV Hub, but there's an Android TV app available in apkmirror
  5. On Android TV, vpn works only via wifi

  1. Android TV is not the same as android for touch screen devices. ATV apps need to work with a remote.
  2. Again ATV are not the same as android for touch screen devices. Some will work when sideloaded, but the ones that work mostly need an (air) mouse to be controlled
  3. Basically the same as my previous 2 answers. Sideloaded apps is hit or miss

Doesn't matter what ATV device you use. The rules are the same
