Spotify stopped working on my mibox s

When i click on a song it either does nothing or it looks like playing it but no sound comes out and i cant play, pause or skip the track. Sometimes i click on one song and the song i tried to play previously seems to start, again with no audio and with the play/pause and skip track not working.

I've tried restarting my TV box, updated the app and even unplugged my TV box from the wall but no luck so far, ive also tried logging off and logging back in on the TV and tried playing the song remotely from my phone but when i do that i get an error saying unable to connect to the device.

After posting this i went on to reset my mibox, erasing all data, the bug still persists

Edit: Chromecast works for me for now, thank y'all for recommending that.

Clearing Active Apps from Memory

I used to have a Shield, and if you double clicked the home button, it would display active apps that you could then clear from memory.

This does not work on my new ematic AGT419 (the successor to the Walmart Jetstream box).

Does anyone know of a way, besides going into app settings and doing a FC, of controlling apps in memory?

Is there any news on the upcoming Chromecast Ultra with remote, codenamed Sabrina? I thought it was going to be announced on the cancelled Google event in May, and there was some chatter a few weeks ago when the remote went through some authorization process. But now it's all quiet?

TIP: YouTube's "Watch on TV" feature is awesome!

I've been so happy with this feature, I'm gonna share a tip here for those who are not aware of it, like I was.

I watch a lot of YouTube on my Android TV (Shield TV).

With ChromeCast, I can cast YouTube video from my phone, if I'm browsing the YouTube app there. When you choose the default cast option "to Shield", it takes over the TV, and you have minimal control, as it is assumed that you would use the phone as remote control. It launches the cast YouTube video 'on top of' the YouTube TV app. This is annoying. Ideally, I would like the cast video to play in the TV app itself, so that I can cast AND be able to use the YouTube TV app normally.

Well, I was happy to find out that you can do that (mostly) with the Watch on TV/Link with TV feature.

Go to your settings on the YouTube TV app, and go to "Link with TV code". Now go to settings on the YouTube app on the phone, and tap "Watch on TV". Enter the code, and you'll find that when you press the cast button, you'll get an new option in addition to the original default one. By default it named itself "YouTube on TV 2" in my setup.

If you cast to that the new option, the two apps "link", and you get a unified watching experience. You can either choose videos on the phone and play them (or add them to queue), or use the TV app like you usually would. You keep full control over the YouTube app on the TV, nothing changes. I love that the YouTube app on the phone updates when I switch videos on the tv! it's so cool. I have an old tablet that I set up on my coffee table as a companion YouTube screen now. Both phone and tablet are linked simultaneously with no problems.

Some advantages:

  1. sometimes I want to check comments or the description of a video I'm watching on TV. Previously, I would open the app on my phone, go to my history, and open the video (which would start playing on the phone too, very annoying).

Now, any video playing on the tv is immediately shown on the phone, and I can look at the info without interruption.

  1. sometimes I want to move to another room and continue watching my video. Previously, I would stop the video on the tv, then navigate to the video on my phone from history, and hope that YouTube remembers where I stopped (sometimes it does, sometimes no).

Now, I stop the video on the tv, then just end the cast on the phone, and voila, the video playback is right there where I stopped. Love the continuous experience between the two apps!

  1. I mentioned adding to queue earlier. For the life of me, I don't understand why I can't queue videos on YouTube. You can do it when you're casting, as it asks you if you want to play or to add to queue. It's pretty odd to me that you can't do the same when watching videos normally.

With linking devices, you can sort of do that. Because the phone is casting, you can add videos to queue without interruption. The YouTube TV app follows the queue when the current video is done. Fantastic!

That's about it. I don't know how many people are aware this exists (hopefully I don't come off as an idiot 😅) but I hope you find it as awesome and useful as I do!

Cheers!

EDIT: 4) another major advantage I stupidly missed to mention is that the devices connected to the TV can stream to it regardless of whether they on the same local network or not, which is awesome! You can link and stream videos from anywhere.

YouTube app is popping up "Viewer Discretion" message

I've checked the settings in both my YouTube app on Android TV, and the YouTube app on my phone. Both of the options are unchecked for "Restricted Mode".

Each time I select the "I wish to proceed" option in the YouTube app on the Shield TV, the next message I get is:"Sorry, something went wrong. This is an age restricted video." I get stuck in a loop, and it won't play the video.

If I use the YouTube app on my phone, to stream the same video via Cast to the Shield TV, it works just fine.

Seems like this is a bug with the YouTube app for Android TV devices. Has anyone recently started to have this happen to them?

Finally a perfect File Explorer for Android TV!

Previously used ES File Explorer on all my devices, without really thinking about why I used it. It was an old recommendation years ago and it just stuck with me on every phone tablet and Android TV.

Now it turns out they are permanently DELETED from the Android TV Google Play store since mid-2019, because ES had embedded spying code that clicks on hidden ads to earn money without user consent!

So I needed a replacement and went through old threads here and saw many people recommending FX File Explorer (http://www.nextapp.com/fx/).

The screenshots were beautiful but I saw that it had some 7 day trial and costs money, so I went to look at other alternatives such as the free but awfully ugly and clunky X-Plore. Many people like that one since it is totally free, though.

By accident, I went back to the FX File Explorer page and accidentally installed it. Tried to cancel the download but I was too late... So I decided to run the application.

Turns out it was a wonderful accident. The UI is very clean and beautiful. And the navigation is much better than ES (which was always absolute HELL to navigate properly to the desired buttons since it jumps all over the screen randomly). The navigation in FX is absolutely solid and perfect.

You can even open multiple folders at the same time and easily cut/copy files between them, which is insanely useful (and seems to be unlimited since I have 11 folders open so far and got bored of opening more). The cut/paste clipboard is fantastic and lets you view exactly which files you have in the clipboard at the moment, so that you never blindly paste anything.

You can also split the screen view to see two of the open folders at the same time.

Selecting multiple files is very easy by tapping and holding on each file to add them to the selection.

You can easily navigate to any folder in the open path by clicking on the address bar which shows a breadcrumb bar of every subfolder.

You can change file view modes to icons, list or cards.

The progress bar when copying/moving/deleting files is fantastic and provides clear information about progress and file count.

While you are doing a long and slow copy/delete, you can click the "X" icon at the top of the progress dialog, and it will minimize itself to the "tasks" sidebar and let you do other stuff while you wait for the long process. I have never seen other file managers with that feature before.

There is also a very nice "completed tasks history" which lists every serious file action you have done, such as cut-/copy-paste, delete, etc.

You can search for and find files, which uses an indexed database for very quick searches.

You can add folders to your bookmarks/favorites to easily navigate to them from the app's start page. You can even organize the bookmarks in folders/groups if you have tons of them. For example, I added a SMB1 network share, and then created a shortcut to that share for instant access to my NAS media box. You can also set custom icons and titles for your shortcuts.

It has a built in video player, music player, image viewer, text viewer, text editor, and binary hex viewer.

It supports creating and unpacking archives such as zip, 7zip and rar.

There are cleanup tools for visualizing disk storage and cleaning up trash files. You can navigate the disk/storage folder by folder and it shows what the largest folder/file is within each folder you check (so let's say you look at Main Storage and it shows that the Android folder takes 2970mb, then you click on that and see that the largest folder in there is "org.xbmc.kodi" which is your media center app, and voila you realize you should do some cleanup/maintenance of Kodi to free space, very useful). You can also see APK sizes for all installed apps which tells you what applications are huge and bloated and maybe should be uninstalled. It can also find duplicate files on your system, and show you the largest files on your system, for easy cleanup.

There is a Web Access feature which lets you start a web server on your device and access it in your computer's web browser to see the files in your device and upload/download/manage the files.

You can customize the colors very deeply with tons of choices for the UI colors and trim colors, and light/dark modes, so you can make it look any way you desire. And you can customize the built-in icon colors and their shapes (square, round, etc). There are also alternative icon themes to install.

They have no ads (at least not on Android TV from what I can see, but their slogan is "No ads. No annoyances. No tracking. Manage your files. Retain your privacy." so I assume it is ad-free everywhere), and the infinite free version lets you manage the local device and attached USB/SDCard storage.

If you want Network shares (SMB1, SMB2+), Bluetooth (transfers to/from Bluetooth devices), FTP (including secure FTP-S/FTP-ES), SSH FTP, WebDAV, Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, One Drive, OwnCloud, SugarSync support, and FX Connect (easy transfers between two devices that both run FX), then you can get a 7 day trial (it says there's no charge after the 7 days end) for the Plus version.

I ended up buying a lifetime license for the FX Plus version which has all features, and only costs $1.99 dollars as a one-time fee. Seriously nothing to complain about at that price.

The company that makes it is "NextApp, Inc." so it's made by a large American company and not an indie developer or foreign company, which is nice to know for respecting privacy laws and quality reasons.

Furthermore, I installed it on my other Android devices, and my FX Plus license (the one I bought via my Android TV) is valid on all of them, which is awesome! Everything is really fantastic with a touch interface, and the UI animations are beautiful. So it's great no matter which device it's on!

Had to share my recommendation here and thank everyone who had recommended FX File Explorer. It is way better, way cleaner, way more reliable, and way more intuitive than ES ever was! I definitely have only begun to scratch the surface of what this app can do!

Tivo Stream 4k "Storage space running out"

Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem?

My Stream 4k has gotten very laggy, and I'm constantly getting "Storage Space Running Out". I've installed maybe 2-3 additional apps outside of what it came with. I've also uninstalled a couple of apps that it came with. There is no way that the storage is full from what I have installed.

Anyone have any suggestions? Please something more than "uninstall some apps", as thats obviously not the problem. I'm just not familiar enough with AndroidTV to troubleshoot.

Thanks.

Controlling volume of the Android TV via Google Home .

I usually control most of the things on Android TV with the Google Home which I have before it. Usually it works pretty well.
Today when I told my assistant on the Google Home to "increase the volume" on my TV it just goes up all the way to 100 and when I say "decrease the volume" it goes to 0.

The same command works correctly when I use the assistant via TV remote. Has this happened to anyone else?

Video footage playing upside down

I’ve got recordings on my GoPro but when I use it the camera is mounted upside down. When playing this footage back on a laptop or iPhone the video then plays the correct way up

But if I play the footage back on my Sony android tv, the video is played upside down. It appears that the tv ignores the metadata and doesn’t flip the video. I’ve tried with the media player and through kodi and using the rotate function but it doesn’t flip it

Logitech M590: Multi button mouse with dedicated horizontal and vertical scroll is amazing for Android Tv

I recently got this Logitech M590, Bluetooth, basically for my daily work and silence feature. Just now I tried pairing with my Shield Tv and whoa... It's whole new world.

The mouse has dedicated buttons for vertical scroll (near thumb) and horizontal scroll (scroll button tilt) out of the box.

Why this is great. I have a few streaming apps which don't support Android Tv . Having dedicated scrolling buttons. Mouse allows me to horizontal scroll through different strips. Same go for vertical scroll wherever the pointer is. This is really great because even Shield controller can't do this. Also, shield app was is not this intuitive in mouse mode. One more good option in mouse to have quick switch button to change between two screen. For example, your Computer and Android Tv.

If you use such apps get such multi-button mouse, normally categorized as gaming mouse with dedicated horizontal and vertical scrolls.

My Ematic Jetstream 4K Ultra told me that an update was available, and in the notes it says "Android 9". It's updating as I type this, so we'll see if Ematic handles this better than Xiaomi did with the MiBox S.
