Mi Box S or Chromecast with Google TV (My Region: Asia)

I am looking to buy an android device. I dont care about streaming 4k content or HRD, Dolby etc. But the things I am looking for is to be able to use VPN for my streaming services and having a smooth experience (not having to deal with bugs). Also I want to choose a device which does not have limited features due to my region (I fear Chromecast might have that issue).
Any advice would be helpful or experiences of using those devices in Asia.

My one complaint: A small speaker on the remote that beeps when I lose it

WHY ISN'T THERE ONE ?!?!

You know what really grinds my gears?

I have a Google Home and an Android TV. They gave the remote a microphone but no speaker. This is a no-brainer, why no tiny speaker EXCLUSIVELY to emit a loud beep when you tell Google that you lost the remote. Nobody at HQ thought of this?

edit: I am a chronic remote-loser, I will admit that, i'm just annoyed that I have to buy AirTags for a remote when this should have been built in!

Mecool KT1 review: AndroidTV-flavored digital terrestrial television 📺

Mecool was kind enough to provide me with the Mecool KT1, an Android TV device that sports a DVB-T2/S2/C tuner built-in that I was able to test successfully because it's the standard available in my country (I tested the DVB-T2 signal).

Below are the specifications of the device:

- Android 10.

- Amlogic S905X4 with AV1 hardware decoding.

- GPU Mali-G31 MP2.

- HDR, HDR10 and HLG.

- 2GB DDR3 RAM.

- 16GB internal storage.

- WiFi AC dual band.

- Ethernet 10/100.

- One USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 ports.

- One microSD card slot.

- Bluetooth 4.2.

- HDMI 2.1.

Next, the pros and cons of the device:

PROS:

- The interface feels snappy and fluid thanks to the S905X4 SoC, I still haven't seen any lag.

- The remote control is useful to program the TV's ON/OFF power button when HDMI-CEC is not available, plus, a built-in mouse toggle helps to control side-loaded apps not made for the remote. A numerical pad, an assistant button, a Live TV button and quick colored buttons to access functions for the "Live TV" app are also available.

- The "Live TV" app is an slightly modified version of the "Live Channels" app, intended to gather different live channel sources (Pluto TV, M3U8 streams, etc.) and the bult-in tuner, all in one place.

- You can Invoke a TV channel from home screen by the press of the assistant button, just say "channel [number] and it goes directly to it.

- Multichannel PCM support is back on Android 10 (it was removed from Android 9 for some reason).

- Dolby Atmos inside Dolby Digital Plus passthrough support is available.

- Dolby Digital Plus to Dolby Digital conversion is available thanks to the variant in the SoC (The letter B in the SoC [S905X4-B] means the device can provide the conversion. Earlier S905X SoCs with that letter also supports the feature).

- The SoC/GPU helps to improve PSX games using emulators, stutter is practically gone, though N64 games still need a powerful device such as the Nvidia Shield.

- Earlier Mecool devices had trouble with WiFi, this at least feels stable overall.

CONS:

- As it's already known, Netflix is not available because it's not a certified device, though there are modified versions on the internet that can be used without problem.

- Setting up the tuner the first time is not practical or straightforward, I had to learn by myself how to use it since the included manual doesn't have tuner setup instructions.

- The tuner is not dual, which means, recording a channel while watching another in a frequency different than the one where recording takes place is NOT possible.

- Timeshift is not ON by default while using the tuner, it needs to be turned ON manually but switching channels is NOT possible while it's ON.

- Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and Master Audio are not supported, though some apps can decode them as multichannel PCM without loosing the lossless quality.

- Auto framerate is not supported.

BUGS OR ISSUES:

- I wasn't able to use a microSD card I have, the device says it's not supported, but I believe it could be a bug in the OS, which I'm going to report as soon as possible.

- I had issues when trying to mount a USB 3.0 thumb drive in the USB 3.0 port, most of the time it doesn't recognize it or it takes some time to do so, but it always get recognized in the USB 2.0 port.

- The WiFi module doesn't respond to the internet connection after waking up the device from standby, it takes approximately 2 to 3 minutes to respond.

- The DVB-S2 tuner doesn't seem to appear or when it does, it doesn't seem to recognize the signal from the satellite dish I tried to use, I'm still not sure if it's a problem of the device or a wrong satellite setup from my side.

The above issues are already reported to Mecool, here's to hope they provide a firmware update to fix them all.

NOTE: The timeshift feature and recordings can't be made with the internal memory, an external USB thumb drive or hard drive is necessary.

Overall I believe this is a cool device, it just needs some polish in a few aspects.

Thank you Mecool!

Setting up a android tv for my grand parents to watch old shows

Hello, I'm trying to setup an android box that's really simple for my grandparents to use and watch their shows through a usb that i'll put the content into because they have no internet and are not connected to a server. Their tv is really old and doesn't contain a usb slot so that's not an option. I bought an x88pro10 however, it seems pretty slow throughout the menus and watching and loading the episodes i try to play on it through VLC player. I wanted to know if its the box that I bought or the usb that's bottle necking the process i'm using microcenter 32gb usbs just to try out the box and will buy a higher quality usb if it's required. Or if you guys have other ideas please do chime in i'm thankful for all suggestions

I would like to install a Sky News app on my Android TV device.

But the only Sky News app for Android I can find is for mobile devices. The Play Store says that it is not compatible with my device which is an Nvidia Shield running the Android TV OS. I was able to sideload a Sky News app for Android from either APKPure or Aptoide, but it's the app for mobile Android. Does anyone know if there is a Sky News APK out there somewhere that is compatible with my Shield? Thanks.

I'm having compatibility issues with a new format of 4k files/codecs, please help me find what the issue is

I'm having problems with some new file types (or codec?) and I'm not sure what the problem is, I played the same file from my PC and it works perfectly so I'm looking for any help I can get to find the culprit. My best guess is that the file has something new that's not compatible with the chip of the MiBox and the chip of the TV (new codec maybe?) because the TV's native player vía USB gives me the same result.

Hardware: MiBox S and LG Oled B855

Symptoms: the screen starts to flicker and HDR does not activate at all, the same happens when I use the Mibox (Kodi and other payers) and the native player of the TV, but it does not happen when I use the PC (MPC).

Sony Android TV need OpenVPN Application based Split Tunneling w/ auto startup

Hello all I have a Sony X800h Android TV.

So I need an application that I can use OpenVPN for an IPTV App called "ZaapTV" because some channels are not allowed in the US.

I use ExpressVPN App and it has Application Based Split Tunneling to do this and it works. But the issue is that the ExpressVPN App does not connect to the VPN automatically when the TV Turns on.

I would like to know of an App that can provide Application Based Split Tunneling and at the same time can connect to the VPN when the TV Turns on

P.S I have also tried "OpenVPN for Android" but it does not have an application based split-tunneling Feature (unless anyone can teach me how to get that I would appreciate it)

Thank you all!

Sharp (55inc) smart TV cannot support Spotify whilst I play games on a different source anymore?

Title says it all, when I first bought it I could stream Spotify on my phone to my TV and switch sources to play on my Nintendo switch (HDMI 1/2). Now when I do it my phone disconnects from the TV and Spotify pauses. Only started doing this today. Pretty frustrating as I know it’s capable of doing so, what I’ve tried so far:

Reinstalled Spotify on both TV and iphone Muted all sound on switch Paused Spotify before switching sources Changed ports for the switch Play Spotify directly from tv, then swap sources

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

edit formatting is on phone sorry. Also factory reset tv. Has not fixed it.

Boxes that support removable storage playback from NTFS or exFAT?

I am looking to buy a streaming device. For me, while I love streaming, having local playback of most common file types without restrictions on file size is a must have feature.

Right now I am looking at the Google TV as it seems to be very good value for money, but my issue is that it does not support removable storage playback of files over 4GB, and plugging in removable devices requires extra hardware. I am aware of app based solutions but these sound clunky to me. If someone can provide an anecdote that the solution is rather seamless I may still consider the Google TV.

The other option I am considering is the Mi Box S, I understand it is older and slower and has a few problems. The biggest benefit to me is it supports both exFAT and NTFS without issues. The largest drawback to me is potential h.264 encoding issues that cause ghosting on local file playback. Though I am not sure how prevalent this issue is.

In Australia, both devices are going for about $90. What are your thoughts? Are there other devices I should be aware of? I am not looking exclusively at Android TV devices, but obviously Australian availability is critical. Is it worth buying a very cheap box for local playback and a separate streaming stick?

I am also aware that the Nvidia Shield Pro would meet my needs and I would really love such a device, but the price tag ($350 AUD) is not justifiable to me at the moment. Additionally, I understand that it is quite simple to use Plex to stream your local media collection to your device, but that is not suitable for my use case.

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Blue Light filter on Smart TV

Hello everyone. I was wondering if there's such a thing as a built-in blue light filter on these TV'S. I read somewhere you can just tweak the b-gain in the two-point white balance settings. Does that really work? Can I make it so it works (or looks) the same as the blue light filter on my phone?

I tried that Twilight app and my tv warned me the app would get my passwords, and it made me uninstall it immediately. Maybe I overreacted?

Are smart TVs all 10/100 Ethernet ports?

I was having an issue with the fact that my Internet connection was significantly slower when my TCL TV was wired than when it was on WiFi. Thought it was the cable, bought new cable. Thought it was the router, changed the router settings. Chatted with a TCL rep, was disconnected, chatted with another, was disconnected, finally spoke on the phone with one, was told "If your WiFi is working your TV is working" and then was hung up on. Literally hung up on.

Finally, found someone in some forum who said that all smart TVs are 10/100 ports. A. Is this true? (And if so, what reason is there for this in 2021 on TVs advertised as 4K). B. Why on Earth does it not say so anywhere in an accessible place, such as a manual or technical specs? C. Why couldn't TCL customer support just have said "the TV isn't designed to get wired speeds over 97" and saved me a giant time suck?

TV seems to be dead after 3 months...

Hi

I have a tcl 50c715 that worked fine for 3 months, but yesterday it suddenly produced strange noises and I couldn't turn it off any more.

So I unplugged it and now when I start it the home-screen is almost empty and none of the few icons that are left work - nothing happens.

In particular I cannot access the settings menu anymore and this seems to be the only way to do a factory reset.

Unfortunately I cannot contact tcl support before Monday, so I wonder does anyone has an idea what I could try? ,

Google TV/Chromecast don’t change inputs on my Android TVs

I have a Sony A1E OLED (2017) and an LGC7 OLED (2019). One has the new googleTV an the other an older Chromecast Ultra. Despite turning on the CEC mode, when i try to play music through my home group or when I try to watch Netflix from my phone, the TVs power on but they don’t switch the the input that has these devices plugged into HDMI.

I tried changing the input and swapping the devices and TVs. I pushed every button on the TV settings so many times, and I can not get this to work the way it is intended.

When I got the Sony, it did function properly, so I suspect a TV update disabled this.

Any suggestions other than push the input button on the remote?
