Zank Remote Substitute For Google TV Remote?

by Goodspike

The connection issues for the new Google TV remote have been driving me nuts. I found Zank Remote as an option, but didn't find anything on it here. You basically need to install this app on both your Android/Google TV device, then turn on USB debugging (still figuring out whether that should bother me), then install the app on your phone.

The interface has a lot of options which I need to research more fully. Buying the ad free version costs $6. It still requires using Smart Lock, unlike the old Android Remote app. Oh, and when you install it on your phone it is called Android Remote in the apps area, not Zank . . ..

Has anyone else tried/used it? Unlike the other remote apps this one does not rely on the Google remote services installed on your Google TV device, so it continues to work.

Well, that was a failed experiment. The app layout simply has too many buttons, and hitting the wrong one will take you to some strange places (I won't say anything more). But unfortunately the normal FF/REW buttons wouldn't work in Channels DVR, and you had to go into another subpanel and hit one of two small buttons. And it wouldn't stay on that screen if the screen timed out and you came back in. It would have been unusable.

FF/REW did work in Amazon and Netflix, but when I went to Apple the thing completely quit functioning for some reason. I uninstalled at that point from both the fob and phone because the layout of the app just wasn't going to work.

Uninstall default Android Remote app and disable it, it'll work after :)
