Stream from harddrive

Hi,

I have a hard drive full of films, currently using my laptop hooked up to the TV through HDMI. What would be the best Android device to connect my hard drive to and stream to my tv, using HDMI?

Nvidia Shield might be too powerful for this task, as this would be its only use. On the other hand, the built-in Plex server is great for this. Is the Xiaomi a good alternative?

4k not necessary, I just want a smooth 1080p experience.

Thanks.

ONN Stick Soundless?

I was thoroughly enjoying my change from a FS to an ONN stick. But suddenly, out of nowhere, no settings changes, the sound stopped. Long ago I installed custom launcher but the stick and the launcher worked fine until yesterday. Any ideas?

Oh! It does still make sounds when selecting buttons on the screen so no issue with the TV.

Chromecast w/ GTV not displaying 4K on Disney+

Hello! First time posting here!
I just wanted to see if any of you had this same problem!

I have a Chromecast with GTV hooked up to my SDR 4K TV and everything works great, Netflix, Youtube, Primevideo plasy 4K without issue, but on Dinsey+ I only see the HD available tag and none of the content plays in 4K.

I have tried restarting the device, deleted the cache, reinstalled the app and also called D+ Service to have them tell me my device is not supported!!!.

I would love if you could help me with this.

Thank you!

Dolby Vision from external HDD?!

Heyy!

I am wondering if there is any way to play dolby vision content from my external hdd on my Hitachi 50HAL7351 4K android tv?

I know that my TV does support Dolby Vision and HDR. But I do wonder if there is some way to either play a Dolby Vision MP4 or Dolby Vision MKV file on my TV, in a media player like VLC or Nova video player?!

I have played a Dolby Vision MKV file before in Nova video player, and it played normally, but I can't know if that movie really showed me true Dolby Vision. Some media players don't have support for it yet and automatically converts Dolby Vision to HDR10, and I have been searching for a solid answer to this mess but every site says a different thing.

So if Dolby Vision does work in some media player, does it make a difference then if it is a Dolby Vision MKV or a MP4?

If you have an answer I would be very thankful!

Alternative to Fire TV with less software bloat, ads etc?

Looking to upgrade from my FireStick.

Rather tired of Amazon forcing their ads down my throat and disabling customs launchers.
I just need sideloading and something that isn't intrusive with its ads, visual updates & bloat ware.

How do you like to use your ATV/GTV box?

Hey peeps,

New to the ATV/GTV scene and just got myself a 4k Walmart Onn TV Box. Must say, I'm super impressed - for $20 it's like having my phone hooked up to the TV but with a slick remote replacing the aged-out multi-buttoned mess that came with the LG TV.

What I was really after was a wireless way to hook my computer up to the tv primarily for the purpose of videos/entertainment. I actually started on my RPi4 with Steam Link doing desktop Mirroring. It worked, but I'm not sure my XPS13 is the best streamer and the setup is not v plug n' play.

I'm not a big Netflix/Prime/Streaming app guy and I mostly just do things the old fashioned way by downloading first. If there were a Spotify-like streaming service that had everything I'd prob signup to that, but as it is I don't see the point in subscribing to things that have films/tv I don't want to watch...

Anyways, I've played with a few different ways of interacting. Started with 'casting' videos: mostly tabs and video files. I've found that video is a bit hit and miss. Subtitles can be troublesome and only two apps I've tried have been reliable (Videostream/Android MX Player). I'd say this is a fairly stable option but performance is not 100%, you still get a little occasional frameskip and configuration options are minimal.

Then I realised I could install media apps. So I got bloomberg, al jazeera, France24 and DW, all of those work amazing! I used to pay $50/month to get access to those channels and now I have them all for free! I literally have cable tv delivered to my house wirelessly (over 4g/lte)!

So given this thing is basically a cheap android phone with HDMI hookups, I thought I'd try and setup proper networking. Got network shares on my computer, an ext hdd sticking out of my router and wow. Just, wow.

Works right off the bat with both VLC and MX Player. Of course setting up SMB can be a pain, but once you get it going there's really nothing that beats it as far as the above options are concerned. Running things over the network like this seems to provide an almost fool-proof way to ensure compatibility with all my files, while importantly delivering optimal performance and configurability. What I essentially wanted was desktop-level controls on my tv but in a nice remote friendly format, and this is it.

Next step Kodi,..

So that's my journey so far. Local Network seems to be the way to go, using it basically like a satellite/cable TV box.

Have you guys come to similar conclusions? What have your journeys been like?

It's too low, when tv is on 100% sound level is barely sufficient.

Problem with Prime Videos streaming quality on Android TV

Hey guys. I think some of you know this problem or had it too. The streaming quality in the Prime Video app on my Android TV is just awful. You can't even change the quality in the settings, only on mobile devices. What's strange is that if I stream from my Prime Video app from my phone, the quality is amazing. If I disconnect my phone it drops again. I Uninstalled all updates from the app (can't Uninstalled is complete), cleared cache, restarted my TV. Nothing helps me getting better quality. Does someone of you get it work correctly by now? It's just nasty to connect my tv eveytime to my phone.

Universal Bluetooth + IR Remote

I just recently bough t a Sony XR75 with Android TV/Google TV. Furthermore I own a Nubert AS-225 soundbar. The problem is that the Sony CEC is not compatible with the soundbar.

Is there a universal bluetooth AND infared remote that is able to pair with the tv over bluetooth (to control the TV) and still has a built in IR blaster that can be programmed to adjust the volume of the soundbar over infared?

Thank you! :)

Native Android TV app VS sideload and apk

Hello everyone!

Help me remove all doubt… as far as performance/response time goes there’s any noticeable difference between a native/official Android TV app or a sideloaded Apk from “standard” Android?

I’m waiting for Microsoft to release an official TV app for Gamepass but I have the lingering feeling that most of the problems I have right now are related to my device more than the app!

Is it possible to watch and downscale a 4K video stream to watch on a 1080p display?

I used to do this with my computer, if I wanted the highest picture quality I would set YouTube for example on 4K and run it on my 1080p display. This allowed me to bump up the bitrate and since there is always compression on YouTube or Netflix' side and get better image quality more or less.

I will be running a Realme 4K stick on a 1080p TV and I would like to maximize the quality.

Also there might be an advantage to run it through a HDMI splitter that will take a 4K signal and downscale to 1080p, but perhaps a random HDMI splitter doesn't have the algorithm to downscale with good quality.

Mecool KM2 issues Rebooting and getting stuck on logo

I am having issues with a Mecool KM2 rebooting. I have tried factory resetting a few times, but that didn't help.

It usually (possibly only) happens when I am watching something. It reboots and sometimes then gets stuck on the boot logo animation, constantly looping.
I think I have narrowed it down as of an hour ago, to when I watch anything of higher quality than 720p, I have played one episode of The Flash at 720p on Stremio, and I am streaming another episode now and it hasn't yet rebooted.

When I was using CinemHD it rebooted all of the time, I don't know if all the streams were 1080p and higher etc.

Is there anything that would be causing it to reboot on higher quality streams?

Keep Wifi on while sleeping/screen off

Hello, i own a generic Android TV, its branded CVE TV/MSTAR/Wisdom Share, it runs Android 9
I wonder if it's possible to make it keep Wifi active while it's "turned off" (it never is actually turned off, it just sleeps/locks itself) I can confirm that Android keeps running everything while it's asleep, it just completely disables the wifi interface. I have root on the TV so i can tell that the Wifi driver gets unloaded while the TV is asleep. Also in the settings app there's a Wake-on-WLAN toggle but when i toggle it on it immediately toggles itself off.
I tried looking around there doesn't seem to be a Wifi sleep policy setting like there is on mobile
If anyone knows how to prevent the Wifi from disconnecting during sleep it wil be much appreciated

Best Android TV as replacement to PS5?

I bought a PS5 (my first console) a year ago. I was really excited thinking I'll be playing games I've missed out on over the past decade as well as trying out some new games. I've tried a few of the most popular games and exclusives like TLOU, infamous, uncharted, etc. I wanted to like them, but I quit each after a few hours of forcing myself to play them.

90% of what I do on PS5 is watch Netflix, Plex and Twitch, sometimes YT. Basically all functions of an Android TV. The PS5 is a bit too expensive for me to use it just to watch Netflix so I'm planning to sell my PS5 and get an Android TV device, one that will perform the previously mentioned tasks as well as my PS5.

Or would you suggest I just get a very good TV like an LG/Sony OLED or the newest Samsung QD-OLEDs instead?

My PS5 is currently connected to a 4K 32" monitor.

TL;DR: I don't play games on my PS5, only watch Netflix & Plex. I'd like to sell the PS5 and replace it with an Android TV device which will perform same (4K, HDR, Wifi6).

Audio Issue with Nvidia shield/hisense 65u7g/Sonos Arc surround setup

Hi y'all, I really hope someone can identify/help me with my problem as I have searched but not seen anyone else with the same issue on reddit or elsewhere.

my setup is 2019 Nvidia shield pro connecting to my tv via HDMI and my tv connecting my Sonos Arc via EArc with Earc toggled on and in passthrough mode. when I first turn the system on, it works fine. When I play content in dolby surround (I am not sure if it happens with DTS as I don't have any content in DTS audio), whether it be my own files or a streaming app, the audio works fine.

However, when go back to the menu, the system sounds and anything in stereo pcm such as YouTube sound comes out extremely crackly and poppy to the point it might even damage the speakers. the strange thing is that when I go back to dolby surround content, everything sounds fine, but the only way to fix the system sounds and YouTube (and I assume anything not encoded in dolby audio), is to turn off Earc, or switch from passthrough to auto and then back to passthrough in the TV settings.

Some other interesting things, if I turn on dolby audio processing in the Nvidia shield, the problem stops, so I think it has something to do with the passing of unprocessed audio. I've tried using different HDMI ports for the shield and that doesn't help. I bought all new high-end HDMI cords capable of passing 48gb/s and the issue has persisted.

any help/insight/theories would be greatly appreciated as I am not even sure who's customer service to reach out to as I can't quite tell where the problem is.

Should I go with Nokia Streaming Box 8000 ?

Hello everyone. I live in Europe and I can buy the Nokia Streaming Box 8000 for 65 euros. Is it a good deal? I'm really tempted because it has features like ethernet port and doesn't seem too bloated (compared to Xiaomi mi Box). I don't have a 4K tv so I don't need fancy features (Nvidia Shield seems too expensive for me).

This box will be used primarly for Netflix. However, I learnt about auto frame rate switching / matching and right now, it doesn't seem to be supported by a lot of boxes. I also read this functionnality may be added for Android 11 or 12. Can I hope this Nokia Box will be updated ?

Feel free to suggest others boxes. Thank you!
