Should I go with Nokia Streaming Box 8000 ?

by OursonBleu

Hello everyone. I live in Europe and I can buy the Nokia Streaming Box 8000 for 65 euros. Is it a good deal? I'm really tempted because it has features like ethernet port and doesn't seem too bloated (compared to Xiaomi mi Box). I don't have a 4K tv so I don't need fancy features (Nvidia Shield seems too expensive for me).

This box will be used primarly for Netflix. However, I learnt about auto frame rate switching / matching and right now, it doesn't seem to be supported by a lot of boxes. I also read this functionnality may be added for Android 11 or 12. Can I hope this Nokia Box will be updated ?

Feel free to suggest others boxes. Thank you!

I like the Nokia 8000 a lot, but I don't know if it does "auto frame rate switching / matching" for netflix.

The Nokia 8000 is an SEI Robotics SEI600 using the Amlogic S905X3.

It uses just the same circuit board as the Homatics Box Q, the Youin You-Box EN1040K, the Lefy 4K (Botech Wzone), and others. The remote controls are all different, and the Nokia 8000 probably has the best remote.

Even the same firmware is used across all of these devices. Only the logo and oem partitions are different, every other partition is byte-for-byte identical, including the bootloader. However, the nokia doesn't have the micro-sd card slot installed like the others, but one will work if you solder it in yourself.

About to drop are the SEI Robotics SEI800 devices using the Amlogic S905X4, such as the Homatics Box R. The Homatics Box R may be available in limited quantities in the EU now, from some of the more obscure vendors.

I'd rather have the S905X4 over the S905X3, so if I were buying one of these SEI600/SEI800 devices now, I'd try to get the Homatics Box R, even though it doesn't have as nice of a remote control as the Nokia 8000.

Even the new SEI800 devices are initially shipping with Android 10, so who knows when Android 11 (or higher) will be available for any of the SEI600/SEI800 devices.

In my opinion all it needs is 1080p/4k ability and GTV...

I bought a $20 Walmart Onn box 4k and it's freaking great. I can't believe you can basically run anything on it almost flawlessly. occasionally I might notice some frameskip on the DW or Al Jazeera apps but I mostly stream from LAN Where there is absolutely none and it literally plays anything android does. All WiFi, all out of the box.

Given this thing cost me a$20 and it's imperceptible in comparison to cable TV/my laptop, I really see little point in spending anything above say $50. What for?

Given your in Europe I'd just get an Amazon stick or a Chromecast GTV. Both time tested, both android/GTV based..
