Brand new Philips TV, and volume control over HDMI-CEC doesn't seem to work?

Just picked up a Philips PUS8555 43" for the bedroom, got it installed and hooked up to a new Apple TV 4K, and everything seems to work great! Except for volume control.

For some reason it defaults to volume control over IR. Does the Philips Android TVs not conform properly to HDMI-CEC, or what am I missing here? I enabled the "EasyLink" setting on the TV, which seems to be Philips name for HDMI-CEC, and on/off seems to work great, but volume control does not. What am I missing here?

What's the closest android box to an apple tv? Does it do everything listed here?

I love my AppleTV, I just don't love how locked down it is. I love how I can say "Search YouTube for history documentaries" or "Play the song that goes 'we are the champions'" and it knows what to do. I love how I can speed scroll through items by using the trackpad on the remote.

Is there an android box that does any of the above?

Hisense TV - Green artifacting

Hey there,

We recently got a 2020 Hisense Android TV (ATV4) AND occasionally there are green/purple pixelation or artifacting. I can't seem to find a consistent pattern but it happens across multiple streaming apps. It doesn't happen when I'm playing switch.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, is this issue worth returning the tv over?

Thanks

Is AndroidTV good for video game streaming?

I am interested in buying an android TV device specifically for video game streaming. I’d like to use PS4 remote play, Project Xcloud, moonlight and steam link.

Is androidTV a good platform for this? If so, what should I be looking for? Any model or spec that I should be aiming for? Are the apps available in the play store or do I need to sideload the APKs. I have tried doing this on the FireTV Stick but have been unhappy with the results (not everything works, much works poorly).

I am asking from the perspective of familiarity of Android but no experience with Android TV

Best VNC client for Android TV?

I use a Sony TV with Android and have trouble finding VNC client apps that are compatible with Android TV. They don't appear in the launcher, so must be started manually by going to Settings - Apps, which is time-consuming. If you tab out of Android, Android TV goes back to the launcher next time. The local mouse cursor is huge and drawn on top of the remote cursor, big touchscreen controls obfuscate the screen, some VNC apps have no way of going back once you are connected. The list of trouble goes on. Did anyone find a VNC app that is compatible with Android TV, so at least it gets a launcher icon and can be used with local keyboard + mouse?

Have others been experiencing problems with the Hulu app from the play store recently?

Using a Sony Android TV and I've done everything from clearing data/cache, uninstalling the app, power cycling the TV, and Hulu will always buffer after a couple minutes of streaming, even when connected to ethernet.

Other services like Netflix work flawlessly, and Hulu works on all our other computers and phones, so this leads me to believe that there's an issue with the Hulu app on the Google Play Store for Android TVs

Best way to browse Google photos from the TV?

I'm new to Android TV and I'm trying to walk my first baby steps on the platform.

Everything's okay so far, except that I can't find a practical way to browse my photos and albums from the TV.

I know that I can cast, and asking "show me my pictures" more or less works, because some of my pictures land on the screen.

What I miss is the ability to browse my albums and choose with the remote. I've seen that there's no official Google app, but many 3rd party apps.

I'm ok with buying one, but then it will have all my data and infos.. I could really use a suggestion from someone that's already solved this.

Android TV Box

Hello everybody. I'm just looking for some pointers. Im in need of a new Android TV box. But I'm not sure which ones to go for. I can load up any apps it needs (ei CinemaHD, Typhoon and any limitless, XCIPTV apps for Live TV) but there are way too many choices on Amazon and im somewhat new too it. I had a M96Q Pro+ 4k but it suddenly started crashing. Restarting after every 45m to an hour. So id like to stay away from those. We don't get along

I've seen some on Amazon with newest KODI preloaded but I'm not sure if i can use those or not. Do I factory reset then put my own stuff on them?

Any help or tutorials would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help

Any fix for "black bars" on VLC not really black?

Hi I have a TCL 43P8B and when playing theatrical aspect ratio movies on VLC the black bars aren't really black. They seem to be more of a navy blue. It's really obvious during fade to black transitions and during credits.

Is this by design, or is there something up with the local dimming on my TV? Does anyone know of a way to fix this without resorting to cropping? Thanks!

Edit: Added photo

Movie black (center) v.s. VLC black bars (top and bottom)

Also, tested playback from PC through HDMI, and bars were properly black. :/

Question regarding Minecraft on Android TV

So I just got a used MXQ Android TV, and while I was setting it up I had the idea to download Minecraft onto it, when I went into the Google play store and searched for Minecraft it was paid even though I was logged into the account that I bought the Minecraft copy on (I also checked my purchase history and Minecraft was there). Any ideas why this is happening? Is there like a different version of minecraft which you have to buy for a Android TV? Thanks!

Google fixed issue not allowing users to turn off “Let others control your cast media” on Android TVs

Not sure if everyone has encountered this issue, or how long it has been fixed, but about a month ago I noticed I couldn’t turn off this setting for the Chromecast built into my Android TV. It was irritating, and appeared to be even more troublesome for some users with shared wifi connections in their apartment complex who had posted to the subreddit looking for an answer to their problem.

Well today it let me turn it off. Not sure if this is only news to me or if it works for everyone, but I figured I would share, even if it only helps one person struggling with this issue.

Cheers.

The best cheap Android TV streamer for cord-cutters: A TiVo Stream 4K with its TiVo features removed Removing the bloat from TiVo's $50 streaming dongle makes for a pretty great Android TV experience.

"At its core, though, the TiVo Stream 4K is also a cheap 4K HDR streaming dongle that runs on Google’s Android TV operating system. And if you have no interest in TiVo’s extra features, you can easily remove them and customize the device to your liking. That means stripping away all the pre-loaded apps and reprogramming the remote control with shortcuts to your favorite functions."

For a 74 year old

Trying to find something with the simplest UI I can. If it literally just booted up to a file explorer, defaulting to the external HDD, that would be great.

Criteria:

  • HDMI out - to tv
  • USB - for ext HDD
  • Ethernet - To transfer files to the connected external HDD from another computer on the same network
  • Remote - with as few buttons as possible
  • No streaming, no netflix, etc. None of that. Just a box that can play video files off of an external hard drive.
  • Dead simple UI for easily navigating and playing videos. It's fine if there's an "advanced ui" so long as it can boot up to the grandma friendly mode by default.
  • Plays any media format (not just H264/MP4)
  • Not made by Apple

Edit: Found an app called "Launch on Boot". So with that, assuming it works, I should be able to make any Android TV device boot to a file system or video player app.

Any way to turn off screen? (Xiaomi Mi TV 4A on Android 9)

Hey there.

I recently made the terrible mistake of installing the Android Pie update on my Mi TV, which took away the screen off function that was usually accessible through holding the power button.

Now I'm looking for alternatives, like apps or hidden commands or anything like that to accomplish the same feat, or at least significantly darkening the screen, without interrupting netflix or prime or whatever.

I'm not finding any app on the tvs play store, but I hope there's an app to sideload maybe?

Any help is appreciated
