Brand new Philips TV, and volume control over HDMI-CEC doesn't seem to work?

by cstromme

Just picked up a Philips PUS8555 43" for the bedroom, got it installed and hooked up to a new Apple TV 4K, and everything seems to work great! Except for volume control.

For some reason it defaults to volume control over IR. Does the Philips Android TVs not conform properly to HDMI-CEC, or what am I missing here? I enabled the "EasyLink" setting on the TV, which seems to be Philips name for HDMI-CEC, and on/off seems to work great, but volume control does not. What am I missing here?

Having the exact same problem with the top of the line Vizio & Nvidia Shield TV. I can't even get the TV to power on from the shield and still need to use both remotes. Super frustrating.

Assuming you want to use the Siri remote, there is a setting in Apple TV under settings -> remotes and devices where you can choose how you want volume control to happen.

I’ve had a similar issue and it turns out it was set to IR blaster for some reason.

Also Philips TVs have additional categories in Easylink, specifically one that asks you if you want to use the remote to control other devices. I have set this to off in the very beginning as it turns out it would only accept volume inputs from the Philips remote (which in my case is an ugly grey huge block of unreadable plastic), even though I use a receiver in the middle that was perfectly capable of taking commands from the Siri remote.

I have never encountered a TV that had CEC implemented in a completely satisfactory way, it seems like these should all be solved problems in 2020.

Edit: oh and in case that TV is Dolby vision capable, worth it to check if DV content on Apple TV via hdmi has color banding in gradients. Mine does (7304) but I noticed too late and now I’m not able to return it anymore so started a long RMA process

I have a Philips Android TV connected to a soundbar and the TV remote works to change the soundbars volume through HDMI CEC.

The implementation is not perfect though. About a third of the time, when I turn the TV on, the soundbar doesn't come on with it.

I have a Philips Android TV and use HDMI ARC with my sound system and all works great.
Can't you do the same?

I Have the 58pus8545 and connected a soundboard via arc hdmi, the tv remote works the volume ok but i have no on screen display to tell me it is doing it ! No biggie, at least I can hear it working ! As for the tv I think it is an absolute bargain! Paid £523 from amazon uk and picture quality especially dolby vision or hdr is amazing! Ambilight really adds to the effect as well !
