How to get rid of the annoying pause screen that takes up half the screen on YouTube app?

Whenever we pause a video on YouTube there's a control overlay that takes up half the screen and makes the bottom half black. It becomes really annoying when you try to pause for the subtitles or to follow along instructions.

The worst thing is it also takes a few seconds to hide away so ends up you got to rewind the video a 10 seconds as well.

Terrible UI design.

Android or HTPC for my preferences?

I'm wondering if I need a htpc or an android TV device for my desired setup

I want to set up an NAS for movies and be able to watch them on multiple tvs through my house. I've got the NAS that I want but I can't tell what would suit me best for actually playing the movies. Originally I wanted to buy a small computer to run Kodi. I don't want to build a computer but I'm savvy enough to do so or download programs for my purposes

Ideally, I'd like recommendations for a device that can access a network folder and play movies from there, thanks!

Android TV - Can I plug in my Chromecast ultra to run Stadia?

I am trying to decide what type of TV to buy. Can I plug in my Chromecast ultra to run Stadia (like I would for any other TV)? I know there are side-loading instructions, but that seems really fiddly, and maybe I should buy a Roku TV or some other Smart TV instead.

I want to be able to use my earphones, like I can with my Xbox or a Roku, can an android TV box do this too?

Got an old 1080p TV which I use in my bedroom. Nice picture on it but it's not smart or anything. I'm currently using my old Xbox one just to stream Netflix and YouTube. It's overkill for what I use it for and it's pretty loud so I'm going to sell it and get some streaming device.

I'd rather have android TV though I was leaning towards a Roku as it can send the audio to your phone. This is important as I do most watching late at night so have to use earphones. The Xbox works perfect for this as I just plug them into the controller. I'm assuming android TV has Bluetooth so I guess I could just get a Bluetooth receiver?

Using Google TV in South Africa

I picked up a Google Chromecast with Google TV to test how the Google TV service would work in South Africa. Here is what I found out ...

Video Tours:

Notes about using Google TV outside of the USA:

  • Using a non USA google account with Google TV will limit you to only the apps you can get in the country google store you are using
  • Adding a US google account to the Google TV will give you access to USA apps like Hulu
  • Recommendations and Genre grouping (the real star of Google TV) will only work in the USA or if you fake your location as USA using a VPN. Even if a VPN does auto connect at boot, it seems that the Google TV home screen needs a relaunch after booting up to kick in the updated location of the VPN. I do this by quickly opening any app and immediately pressing the home button

Notes about Google TV and how it works:

  • Without a VPN to fake the location of the device to USA, there is no Google TV recommendations of grouped genres display on the home screen, instead rows of content based on the app the content is in shows up on the home screen. Very similar to how Android TV currently works, except that the big round app icon is not on the left of the row
  • When Google TV recommendations / genre grouping is not being used, and app rows are used instead, the order of the app rows cannot be customized / re-ordered manually
  • Google TV does not have an app drawer and all installed apps are listed on the homescreen, and once more than 12 apps are installed, a "see all" tile pops up at the end of the "Your Apps" row
  • "Play Movies & TV" is dropped as an app and is instead directly integrated as an app row (if you using outside of USA) or as a recommendation / genre groupings (if you using inside USA or using a VPN to fake the location as USA)
  • "Play Store" is dropped as an app and is instead directly integrated in to the Apps tab of the launcher
  • Some content do not fill up the homescreen tile properly (like Plex and Youtube)
  • The library tab is a section that shows items added to the Google watchlist and any purchased content.
  • The settings app has a complete overall compared to Android TV
  • When ambient mode plays, it is now an interactive slideshow that can be actioned to move between photos rather than as an overlay screen that dies when any button on the remote is pressed, like it used to be in Android TV
  • Pressing the back button on the remote when on the home screen, will start the ambient mode

Xiaomi Mi TV Stick — is really 1GB RAM enough?

Hi everyone! I recently bought two Xiaomi Mi TV Sticks, one for our living room and one for a friend of ours. We mainly use them for video streaming (like IPTV and YouTube). I took a look at the spec sheet and saw that it only has 1GB RAM. Is that really enough for smooth playback? We won't do multitasking really, but is like going through menus, launching apps and playing back live TV smooth on it? Only one application will be in memory.

Oh by the way, if I go to developer settings and set it to "No background apps", would that help?

I don't have the sticks yet, so that's why I'm asking you guys.

How to connect Bluetooth headphone without repairing every time?

I have an android TV box which i don't know the manufacture as it is a rented device for the streaming company

So the manufacture of the device removed the option to manually connect to a BT device, and the device has to manually connect to the box automatically which almost never happens. so to pair them i have to unpair them and pair them like a new device. this is so annoying. I didn't find any app that have a good BT interface to pair devices.

NAS or simular when TV dosen't support steaming, help

I have a Philips 55US8303 and the manual says that it doesnt support streaming.

So i'm assuming that my only option if i want to show photos and video on the tv is to connect a USB device. But that seems kind of annoying if i want to add new files to the USB device and have to disconnect/ reconnect it everytime. Which is what i'm currently doing.

Could i use a NAS or something simular that is accessible from my home network to make it easier to upload files and can be accessed by the TV via USB?

Or is there a better way to do this?

Freeview apps not launching?

Just received an ACL Android TV as a gift. I’ve been trying to launch the All Four and BBC iPlayer apps for a while now and it doesn’t seem to be working. I just keep getting a FreeViewPlay error message saying I need to agree to Terms and Conditions, however when I try to select the Terms and Conditions button below it won’t let me and kicks me out of the app. I’m in the Republic of Ireland so I’m wondering could these be country locked features? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks :)

Touchscreen Android TV

Does anyone know if it's possible to install touchscreen "drivers" onto an AndroidTV box? I am wanting to use a little capacitive touch screen connected to a Mi-box 4k (not 's'). The screen I've tried has an HDMI in, which works fine for display, but the USB output from the touchscreen is not recognised for control of the interface (normal keyboards and mice work) I've used a Sony Android TV with an IR touch overlay which controls the interface (so I know it's theoretically possible with the right build and hardware), and the touch screen itself works fine (plug and play) with a windows PC. One thought I had was if a resistive screen might work better? (I don't know if they appear more 'mouse-like' to the operating system??) - not something I can currently test. Anyway, any genius workarounds appreciated!😉

Bluetooth To TCL Android TV Error

Hey all.

So I moved into a new (and my first) apartment and got an Android TV.

I sorta messed up and tossed away the T.V. remote tho with the trash without realizing.

Anyways. I'm without a remote, so I'm trying to setup the T.V. through Bluetooth on my Pixel and on a laptop, and for both devices I keep coming across the same error message saying "the pin is incorrect". But it is, indeed, very much correct.

T.V. recognises my phone, sends me correct Bluetooth pin, trys to connect to phone, then disconnects because it thinks it never got the right pin.

Anyone else experience similar issues, or have any advice? Thanks.

Assistance please with Philips 5800 tv series and Netflix

By default, the tv has Netflix installed. However, when I try opening the app, there is an error message saying the app is not compatible. It will land on netflix's landing page showing you that you need to redownload the apk.

I have downloaded the apk but it wouldn't install. This has something to do with downloading from external sources. Ideally, I need to change this from the settings (as instructed by Netflix) but can't find it in the browser's option.

Anyone with a similar experience?

Thank you!

Android Recovery on Chromecast with Google TV Starts a DHCP Server

And this sucks if you're using the ethernet adapter.

TL;DR: if your Chromecast is in Android Recovery mode, unplug the ethernet connection or it will take your whole network down.

Today my Chromecast with Google TV got stuck on the boot screen. I unplugged the power and plugged it back in only to be greeted with the "Can't load Android system. Your data may be corrupt." screen. Ugh. I trued unplugging it and plugging it back in one more time, but same result. I had other stuff going on, so I just turned off the TV and left it for later.

A bit later, people in the house start complaining that the wifi is down. That's a rare occurrence, but sure enough, my phone can't connect. I restart my router and access point, but no joy, and now even my hardwired machines can't connect.

Time to dive into the router (it's an EdgeRouter, so that means a serial cable and some VyOS CLI fun). Everything looks fine, but for some reason DHCP isn't working. I can see clients making DHCP requests and the router is responding, but nothing is taking. I spend a couple hours trying everything I can think of. Finally I just give up and restore a backup of the configuration that I knew was good. _Still_ nothing works.

And then it dawns on me. I walk over to the Chromecast and unplug the USB cable. Everything starts reconnecting.

It looks like the Chromecast in Android Recovery mode runs a DHCP server on whatever network interface is connected. This makes total sense for diagnostics on a wifi connection, but just wrecks your network if you're using the ethernet adapter like I am.

Hopefully this post will save someone a couple hours of their life if they run into the same situation.

Google TV with Bluetooth for Couples?

Hi!

I have an old TV where we cast through an old Chromecast to watch Disney Plus and Netflix. We recently became parents, and we're afraid that watching TV at night might wake up the baby on the next room.

I'm looking for a wireless solution to our problem, however I wanted to doublecheck that we can connect two pairs of wireless headphones.

Would the new Google TV (The one codenamed Sabrina) allow us to do this? Do I need to look for a different solution instead?

Thanks!
