Android or HTPC for my preferences?

by nousernameisleftt

I'm wondering if I need a htpc or an android TV device for my desired setup

I want to set up an NAS for movies and be able to watch them on multiple tvs through my house. I've got the NAS that I want but I can't tell what would suit me best for actually playing the movies. Originally I wanted to buy a small computer to run Kodi. I don't want to build a computer but I'm savvy enough to do so or download programs for my purposes

Ideally, I'd like recommendations for a device that can access a network folder and play movies from there, thanks!

Can your NAS run Plex?

If so. Can it transcode?

If not, you'll want something with enough codecs and power your NAS doesn't need to transcode.

If so, every single streaming device can run Plex.

It your NAS can't run Plex: Want to go cheap with devices? Get an odroid h2+ and install Plex server.

Don't care about transcoding? Get a pi4 and let it be your server.

Personally. I run a pi4 that's connected to an 8tb usb 3 hd. My devices don't need transcoding so that's all I need. And the pi runs pihole and sabnzbd for me so I get no ads and pirating automation.

I store my modem, router, pi, hd, and hubitat in a little cabinet that I drilled a hole in the back of and mounted an exhaust fan. The front looks like it's just a normal cabinet in our office and all cords are completely hidden. Living room is a shield tv and Roku Ultras everywhere else. I can stream 50gb 4k UHD rips internally with no problem on a Eero 6 Pro mesh.

HTPC doesn't have to mean "giant tower with a bunch of loud fans". I used an old Chromebox for my parent's HTPC, did a very easy software hack to it to allow it to run Kodi using LibreELEC. It's small like an Android device, was cheaper than a Shield when I bought it (years ago, would be even cheaper on the secondary market now), runs Kodi like a boss (but nothing else) and plays everything that they want to watch. It's got YouTube through an addon, and they use a cheapo Fire Stick for Netflix/Prime Video. Works so well for them, I'm actually thinking of selling my Shield Pro and going with two devices myself.

You could get an nvidia shield, I've yet to run anything that it can't play.

if you have any old laptop laying around you could try libreelec on it.

I replaced my aging HTPC with a $50 CCwGTV running Kodi and couldn't be happier. I use it to play my video files that are stored on a networked drive.

Nvidia Shield Pro... I keep my Media on a PC in my house have ethernet behind both of my TVs, have a 2017 Shield on one TV and a 2019 Shield Pro on the other one.

The 2017 Shield replaced an HTPC, and when I got my second TV the Shield Pro 2019 was a no-brainer.

I run Kodi on the Shield's, other people will recommend Plex.
