Xiaomi Mi TV Stick — is really 1GB RAM enough?

by homomemeboi

Hi everyone! I recently bought two Xiaomi Mi TV Sticks, one for our living room and one for a friend of ours. We mainly use them for video streaming (like IPTV and YouTube). I took a look at the spec sheet and saw that it only has 1GB RAM. Is that really enough for smooth playback? We won't do multitasking really, but is like going through menus, launching apps and playing back live TV smooth on it? Only one application will be in memory.

Oh by the way, if I go to developer settings and set it to "No background apps", would that help?

I don't have the sticks yet, so that's why I'm asking you guys.

Not that this comment will be of any help, but I strongly suspect that this is a question you should have asked before committing your money

Definitely not!

1.5 GB is the minimum amount of RAM modern Android TV needs to run.

Well I bought one now it just lives in a drawer. I tried selling it on eBay and the guy returned it. Was a waste of money for me. The new google tv is much better

It runs perfectly fine in my opinion, it's 1080p only after all. I just set one up the other day. Kodi and all. I can even stream high bitrate 1080p movies from local neywork storage no problem without dropped frames. Same with 1080p 60fps video on YouTube.

I would go with 2GB minimum but depends how it’s optimized. A Fire Stick 4K is a top streaming device but only has 1.5gb and works great. But it’s optimized differently than an android box. It won’t allow as many processes in the background, keeping that ram free. For example, you can’t run a VPN and an ad blocker at the same time. A bit more locked down then the open system in an android box.

I'm stuck with it but if you can return it and get a refund do it

Depending of what u gonna using for.

I use my stick for IPTV programs such as: Stbemu, Otgnavigator and few more. Works fine no issues.

No issues also on Netflix and YouTube never tried Kodi so i can't comment how is the performance.

Most of the people complain about this Mi TV stick cause they have big expectations or i dont know its only 1 gb of ram and is pretty enough for video playback 1080p/60fps.

Sometimes when u use multiple apps the stick become a hot so u have to clean background apps to stay in normal temperature.

If i can help with something ask.

My unit works smoothly even in Kodi (though I only watch IPTV) and Plex (high-bitrate files play without stuttering). I think setting the background apps to none would help to free up memory, but also turn off auto updates in the Play Store as that can also cause system slowdowns. The available memory (around 300-400MB) can handle about 2-3 apps simultaneously, but it's indeed better if you'd run one app at a time.

Hi OP, consider products like TiVo Stream 4K or Dynalink Android box. 2 GB RAM, 905y processor prices are sub $30s... In fact, DM if you're interested in a sealed TiVo for less than Walmart or Amazon. The remotes are great on those devices too and the WiFi chips. Both support Dolby Atmos and Vision. In fact, HDR10 support is present too. Good luck with your use!
