Looking For An Android Set Top Box

While I do like my Kindle Fire stick, I feel that I’ve outgrown it and need something more robust. Something that I can place videos and music on just in case of internet outages (which seem to be getting more frequent here after Ida). So here’s what I’m looking for in a set top box. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Takes SD cards (can read at least a terabyte but more would be nice for future-proofing).

  • Not locked down or at the very least easy to jail break or side load apps into.

  • Does not have ads all over the home screen (if this isn’t possible, I’ll deal with it).

  • Possible to upgrade the android version of.

  • Doesn’t go over $250.

Since I’m new to this sort of thing and don’t know enough to tell a “good” set top from a “bad” set top, I figured I’d ask here.

Homatics Box Q just got HDR settings added

I got quite a few PMs asking about HDR, so I thought I'd post this. My box got an update a short while ago, as far as I can tell this update adds settings to toggle HDR and Auto HDR, along with upgrading the security patch to July 5 2021.

Power Adapter for Google TV

I’ve recently purchased a new Google TV Chromecast. The power plug that comes with the device is very long and protrudes from my recessed wall outlet enough to make my TV not hang parallel to the wall. Has anyone else run into this issue and, if yes, how have you resolved? Is there a third-party power adapter that is smaller/more low profile that can be used instead? Thanks!

I can't access a network share or write permission on any pendrive with android TV

Hi people,
I'm trying to access a network share or write permission on some external storage to copy files to a USB stick that my MeCool KM2 will use, but I always run into this error:

"this device does not appear to support the android storage access frame"

With the same program I can access the share on my cell phone, and I've formatted the pendrive in fat32 and still nothing.
Is this common on android TV? how to copy files into the system?

When will we get multiple user support?

When will we get support for multiple users within Chromecast w/Google TV?

I pay for YouTube TV which comes with 6 user accounts, 5 of which I can't access on my living room TV. Currently I'm forced to "cast" from my phone. I can do this within the YTTV app on Roku, why not on your own hardware?

Is it still better to buy an Android Box instead of a Smart TV?

Hey guys, I've been looking to buy a TV for my setup just to watch netflix/prime video, youtube videos and some TV from time to time. I've been searching here on reddit opinions on Android TV and Smart TV but I've seen everyone recommend to buy a good quality TV and then buy an Android Box like NVidia Shield or Xiaomi Mi Box.

For example I got the option to buy a Xiaomi Mi SmartTV P1 which costs 400€ and it has Android TV, or I can buy a similar TV for 400€ and buy after that an Androix Box.

So should I buy a Android TV or a normal TV + Android Box?

Mi TV Stick wifi problems

I'm facing some wifi problems that appeared recently with my Mi TV Stick:

  1. The device doesn't connect automatically to wifi. After each reboot, I need to navigate to network menu and select the wifi to connect to it despite it was already saved.
  2. Poor connectivity despite the router is close to the TV, I tried to change wifi channel to 11 and now it's working better hoping that the problem is related to the selected channel.

PS: I have the last update. I tried to factory reset the device and the same problems persist. I tried also to share wifi from my phone, but the device refuses to connect automatically to it after reboot or when I disable wifi on my router.

Does anyone is facing the same problems?

Quick way to connect Bluetooth headphones to TV?

Hey! Ive just bought new bluetooth headphones and every time when i have it connected to my phone and want to connect it to the TV, i have to remove the headphones out of the bluetooth list and make the TV look for bluetooth decives again for me to finally use them. Is there any way that my Android TV automatically connects to the headphones or something? It is always in the bluetooth devices list because i connected them with the tv before but I cant press on it and click connect or something. Maybe there is a 3rd party software or something to make that progress quicker?

Disney+ on Philips 49PUS6401 does support 5.1 surround over optical

I have a Philips 49PUS6401 Android TV hooked up via optical to an (ancient) Philips AV Receiver FR965. Also have BT TV and Blu-Ray players connected and it supports 5.1 in Dolby Digital and DTS perfectly.

Thought I'd try Disney+ running on the TV and was disappointed to find that I could only get downmixed PCM stereo. Checked online and found various reports on Reddit that the inbuilt app didn't support surround over optical, and I'd need an HDMI amplifier to access the surround channels so assumed it was a no-go.

This morning had a brainwave - how about casting Disney+ from my Android phone to the built-in Chromecast on the TV. Amazing Dolby 5.1 worked over optical!

Not sure that I was getting 4K, so I thought, how about running the built in Android TV app again - now Dolby 5.1 was still working in 4K with HDR.

Now a happy bunny!

I hate it

So I have a Sony Bravia (kd-65ag8) with Android Tv 9 (kernel 4.9.225) and I hate it. It is so slow. Even changing volume lags. The system just struggle to give me useless recommendations on a cheesy home page. Had to limit the system to one process. Amazon prime video just restart itself when I shut it down so I have to reboot the tv every fucking time. What am I missing ???

MASTERCLASS for Android TV: how can I get an older version?

I can't find one.
I just foolishly updated without backing up and I dislike the new version:

  1. You have to go to a whole new page just to see other available classes
  2. It has an annoying splash screen - I don't need my time taken up with a promotion for a product I've already bought. It takes motivation to do the classes and that is the opposite.
If anyone could point me to a way I could get the version with the black logo, all the classes on the one page and no splash screen, I would be very grateful. (I think I got it soon after Dec 2020)

What does the perfect android box mean to you?

Let's face it, there's alot to choose from.

Every review site has their own take on things, the pros and cons.

I'm interested in what you guys have to say. I don't work for or manufacture any device, but I am doing some research.

You have the premium devices that just cost that little bit too much, you have the other end of the spectrum with the iffy OS.

Does the perfect android device allready exist? Are you excited for anything new? Gamer and need that mean gpu for emulation? Vulcan support? Or just a watcher, needing that Widevine l1 for that juicy 4k stream on Netflix?

Let's see what people think.

Edit; Thank you kind strangers for my first awards! :)

Android TV box with Freeview TV?

So I recently got (UK) TalkTalk TV with my broadband. But it basically has freeview TV and then any additional channels they want you to buy bundles from NOW and then use those channels from inside the NOW app, whilst the locked channels still appear in your TV guide list. Point is: Their TV package although very very cheap, is pointless.

Is there an Android TV box which can use an aerial and access Freeview TV and all of the good stuff accessible on Android.

No I don’t want IPTV. Do not mention it at all. Thank you!

R646 1 week review

Have had the R646 for about a week and change now. Here's my take:

If 2.1 hdmi is not important...stick with the Roku OS. The OS is buggy to the point I am considering returning the TV.

Picture is great when it works, which is 50/50.

Happy to answer questions.

TCL R646 - Is built-in Google TV working for anyone?

I just got my TV in today, and the installed Google TV OS is complete crap. I tried to play UHD content on Disney+ and Amazon Prime and it either doesn't play or crashes after a few seconds. Stadia crashed. No audio from ATSC 3.0 broadcast. Constant lag. Basically anything remotely advanced doesn't work.

I just plugged in a Chromecast w/ GoogleTV and it works fine, picture looks great, atmos is fine.

I've seen a couple of other posts of people with issues. Since it seems like the OS is the problem, is TV actually working for anyone? I can't imagine them shipping a TV out with an OS that can't do basic things.

Unless they just pushed out a bad update today, I feel like I'm going to have to return this because it is unusable in its current state.

Update 1:

I played with the TV a bunch more this morning. After fully power cycling (unplug wait 30sec) it seems to be behaving 'better', but the built in OS is still crap. I kind of expect that it will require regular power cycles at the moment to keep it working well.

After short tests I wasn't noticing the huge issues I was having last night where nothing would play. Disney+ won't play Atmos, it will if I use CCwGTV plugged in. Amazon, movies show in wrong aspect ratio, cycling the auto detect aspect ratio option on/off fixes it. At some point the 'settings' button on the remote would just stopped working.
