Why might a stock Android TV have trouble streaming Apple TV+ while a Roku 3 device does fine?

[RESOLVED: looks like it was some kind of Roku-to-TV communications problem. I powered the TV off for 30 secs, then on. Roku is now working again. Aggravating, but I'm new to this so guess it's only the standard learning curve.]

I have a Hisense U6G TV about 6 weeks old. I have a little used Roku 3 4200X given me by a friend.

The Apple TV+ app on both was installed since Dec 1, 2020. The Roku OS was updated to latest within the past 4 weeks when I first installed it in my setup. The Android TV OS was updated to latest at somepoint in December. Perhaps it self-updated since then, I do not track it that closely,

I've used these two different devices' streaming capability for a few weeks. The Android TV rarely streams content from Apple TV+: I see the generic "content not available" screen after it times out. The Roku 3 almost always streams Apple TV+ content well. The difference between the two is stark.

The Android TV does a good job streaming Youtube and Amazon Prime content. It even shows the trailer currently (Jan 11) on Apple TV+ for "Macbeth" without a hitch. But it fails repeatedly to stream other Apple TV+ content such as "Ted Lasso" or "1971" or "Dickinson".

The anomaly seems to lie with the Android TV, or with how it interacts with Apple TV+. Any thoughts on why it should do so poorly when the Roku device is almost always able to stream Apple TV+?

Streaming Distortion

I’ve started getting these green lines and distortion when streaming. I can’t tell if it’s my GoogleTV or my old TV. I’ve changed hdmi ports and it only happens when streaming. The google homepage and homepages of the apps don’t have any issues.

Android TV keeps renaming external USB drive. How do I make it stop?

I have a new Bravia A84J. Attached to it is an external USB drive with all my films and TV shows. The USB drive is exFAT, because I need to be able to use it on both Windows and Mac. The drive has a volume identifier, let's say E4BF-4557. Seemingly at random, if I disconnect/reconnect the drive to my TV, Android will sometimes prepend an "x" and change the ID to xE4BF-4557, making my entire library inaccessible in apps like Kodi. After some time, it will change its mind and go back to the original ID.

How do I make it stop?

I've seen a post somewhere that said that this doesn't happen with NTFS-formatted drives, but that's not an option for me :(

If I can't prevent it from changing the volume ID, can I somehow assign a permanent or relative label that would let me access my libraries in Kodi even if Android decides it's time for another name change?

UPDATE: After dozens of rounds of vigorous shoving and pulling (of USB cables into my TV), I am growing convinced that Android changes the volume ID if the USB drive is disconnected while the TV is actually OFF. I don't have enough data or patience to verify this conclusively, but perhaps it helps someone in the future.

UPDATE 2: Perhaps this helps someone with the same issue. I have identified one of the conditions that reproducibly results in a change of the volume identifier.
If I turn my TV off, it enters sleep mode and will keep a USB drive powered even while the TV seems to be off. This idle state can last for hours or even days. Unplugging the USB during this time will NOT change the volume identifier.
However, eventually, the TV will exit sleep mode and really shut down, turning off power to the USB. If I then unplug the USB drive, turn on the TV and plug the drive back in, Android will always assign it a new volume ID, either prepending or removing an "x". To prevent this from happening, unplug your drives ONLY while your TV is on or in sleep mode (i.e. when your external drive's power indicator is on).

Jetstream AGT418 dead.

Hoping I can get some help on here. I have an EMatic Jetstream AGT418 tv box. It died yesterday and I think it needs it's firmware restored. I know I have seen on here before a few folks who have the factory restore image for these. I haven't gotten any help from EMatic so far. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

Do you guys think that noname boxes are valuable or are they of poor quality ? Or should I buy a Xiaomi box or stick ?

I also read that Xiaomi will release a new 4K stick in several months/weeks (we don't know), so maybe I should wait, or simply buy a Chromecast with Google TV

What would your advices be ?

Philips OLED plagued by brightness fluctuations (models 706/806/956 and other 2020/2021 models), video included in the post.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:

I have remembered that there is one more setting that could have effect on this. In the settings, there is HDMI ULTRA HD setting for each HDMI port, which you can set between Standard, Optimal and Optimal (automatic game setting). I had it on the last one, Optimal (Automatic Game setting), which enables VRR and ALLM.

So I have tested the Optimal setting and voila, majority of the flickering is now gone even when the Light Boost is at the Maximum setting. So it seems that the issue lies elsewhere. It's still worth pursuing this issue in my opinion, but considering the VRR is not the best in these TV's anyway, I will have to live without it.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Philips OLED TV's are great for the money, I own one myself, but there is one major issue that I see with them. Underneath the picture settings, there is one called "Light Boost", which is essentially dynamic contrast/brightness combo. There are multiple values you can set it to, starting from OFF, to Minimum, Medium and Maximum settings.

Setting it to OFF results in a VERY dark picture even in a pitch black room, all the content, games or movies will have a lots of details lost in the darkness and it's very hard to watch anything, or play anything under the OFF settings.

The Minimum settings lightens up the screen significantly and personally would be my go to setting for watching SDR content. When watching or playing HDR content, the Maximum setting should be always selected, so you do not rob yourself from the peak brightness this TV can do.

HOWEVER, this settings except for the OFF one has one major flaw, as in reality, it's not really a static setting of brightness and contrast, each of these are a dynamic setting where the TV will try to calculate and apply brightness and contrast depending on what is happening on the screen. While it's not that much of a problem when watching movies usually, when playing games and especially in HDR, under certain conditions the brightness will start to rapidly fluctuate and the screen will flicker for a short time, which can be very distracting and annoying.

I have found one way to easily reproduce this issue if anyone have one of these TV's and want to test it out, the easiest way is to start up God of War in HDR, equip the Blades, preferably go into some darker area and start mashing the R1 combo. At the end of the combo when Kratos moves blades in a X pattern across the screen, the TV brightness will flicker for a second like crazy. It does it in all 3 dynamic settings (minimum, medium, maximum) where it is the worst on the maximum one. When you have it at OFF, it does not happen at all.

I have created a video where this issue can be seen: https://youtu.be/a5XaNMlSckM

From my point of view this is a major flaw where Philips do not let us set this as a static value and only implemented this dynamically. This could be solved via firmware update and have such static setting available.

Controllers not working in sideloaded game

Just hoping someones ran into this before, but I purchased Spongebob: The Battle of Bikini Bottom Rehydrated on android today for $0.99 (still on sale, I think), and sideloaded it onto the shield. Game loads fine but it doesn't seem to work with any controller. The game officially has controller support, but it wont detect anything.

Didn't know if anyone had run into this before with a different game?

Thanks

External hard drive on Android Box? Or other ?

Hello,

I currently have an LG TV connected but I strongly regret my purchase (first TV, so little experience, I haven't researched enough) because of Webos. I have quite a few MKV files that I would like to read and on Webos there is a media player that often surprises me (file not supported, subtitle not supported etc.), it varies depending on the MKV files (many work but many others don't) and I can't tell the difference between two MKV files (I didn't even know there were any before). I can't turn the TV back on so I'll have to trick it.

For the moment, I have a firestick and a USB stick connected locally to max Livebox to play some files via VLC. The main problem is that there is a slight loss of quality. And not possible to plug in an external hard drive, the Firestick is not powerful enough to open files.

The ideal would be to have a local system, because in a few months I will be moving to a place where I no longer have fiber (and there will be 3 of us using the internet). My budget is a maximum of 80 euros. Ultimately, 100 euros if there is a plus (or if it is the only solution or crush). If there is a little documentation, I am ready to learn, I have three months to find a solution.

So everything related to Plex and Emby, we eliminate because of the internet speed (and I would have had to buy myself a server, it's not cheap). The Raspberry is too expensive, I can't find a used kit for less than 100 euros. And since I don't know anything about it, I'm afraid to give it a go and miss it.

The only solution I see is to take an Android Box where you can connect an external hard drive (which I would buy in addition because if I understood correctly, it will have to be converted into NFT I don't know what but basically , especially for the box, so used also to reduce my budget).

I had spotted the Xiaomi Mi Box S but I want to be sure that it can read files with fluidity like on TV (via VLC or Kodi, whatever), because with this kind of purchase, there is always a surprise (of the kind, it works but it lags). For example, how much capacity of the external hard drive can it support without rowing? 2T? 4T? 500go?

If you have other solutions, proposals, other Android boxes that you are using, do not hesitate. Even though it is expensive at the moment, I am targeting the second-hand market (France). For example, 10 minutes ago I missed a sale of the Xiaomi which was 35 euros (instead of 70 euros new I think?), It was online for 10 minutes. If I had had my questions answered, I would have bought it direct. Hence my coming here.

Thanks for your help, I kinda bother having a smart TV that I can't use as such.

What are some of the best budget boxes that support HD/DRM content?

I've seen a lot of people here that Netflix doesn't work properly in mi boxes.

I want to okay content from prime video, Netflix and HBO Max in HD. I also like playing emulators occasionally, stuff like PS1, PSP and SNES.

Any other feature is not important to me. Even the emulators, if I can get those streaming services working fine.

Nvidia shield is out of reach to me.

What do you recommend?

Google TV suggesting content from services I don't have

Long time Chromecaster, first time with Google TV as of today.

So the suggested content is MOSTLY for services I actually use, plus the Tubi/PlutoTV stuff that Google has partnered with. But I keep seeing suggestions for Hulu/Peacock shows periodically, even though I don't have either of those apps on the device, nor any other Google device I am aware of.

Both of those apps, along with a handful of others, are listed in the "Apps > Apps from my other devices" section, and I have no idea why and I think that is a clue.

I'm trying to clean up this interface without switching to App-Only mode, since I DO want Google to work it's suggestion magic, but only for shit I already pay for.
