Powering on Mi Box S with Google Assistant

Hi everyone!

I own a Mi Box S (MiBox4) which is running Android 9.0. Recently I've been trying to control my TV with voice via the Google Assistant, but the results haven't been good.

The box is connected to a Philips TV which has the EasyLink (their version of HDMI-CEC) enabled, so I'm able to power on/off the TV by simply using the Mi Box remote without any problem. The issue presents itself when I try to control it via the network using the Google Assistant: I can turn off everything, but I cannot turn them back on. Whenever I say "Hey google, turn my TV on", nothing happens. Sometimes the box will turn on a few minutes after I do that, but I'm not sure it is every time or not, because the time interval seems to be different each time. (Note: both devices are connected to the same WiFi network).

After searching a lot, to the point where you visit the same page many times, I've found out that this might be related to the fact that whenever I turn the Mi Box off, it's somehow disconnected from the network and so the assistant can't do anything.
I've tried a few things:

  • Go to the Box Settings -> Screensaver -> Never sleep
  • Install the wakelock revamp apk to prevent it from powering down completely
  • Resetting to factory settings
  • Unplugging everything and plugging back on. This produced some positive results (i.e, I was able to turn the box on again with the voice command), but eventually it started to fail again

Any suggestions?

Audio settings for getting most of my soundbar

I recently purchased a Sonos Arc and having an older (2016 Sony Android TV KD-55X8505C) means I cannot use Atmos, but while getting myself together on an upgrade, I want to get the most of what I can.

Decided to try out the β€œAuto 1” option and this enables 5.1 audio on Netflix and other streaming platforms. Is this the right (best) option to stream audio to the soundbar using the ARC port and let it decide how to play it?

Xiaomi TV stick on HDMI switch? Does it put out 5v signal?

I tried connecting a xiaomi tv stick to a hdmi switch, but it cannot even be detected. I was wondering if the HDMI signal output from the tv stick is 5 volts? Because the LEDs on the HDMI switch do not even light up, so I'm wondering if enough power is being put out.

Android TV on PC

Hey guys, new to the subreddit :)
So, let's get straight to the point, I have a old Vaio Tap 20 that I don't use and I want to make a TV of it, I've seen some videos on YouTube about it but information is scarce.

I have also seen a XDA thread about it, but that was in 2018 and is really not updated. Also I've seen Netflix doesn't work.

I have ran Kodi (LibreELEC) on my machine before, but I wanted to know if there was any ATV x86 possibility, as I kinda don't like Kodi as much as native Android.

Any help and info would be greately appreciated :)

Any Wireless Controller Recommendations?

Looking for some Wireless Controllers that work with Android TV. Don't need anything fancy, I just got RetroArch and some old Roms I wanna play with 2 players. So I hardly even need analog sticks tbh.

Any good controllers that are decently priced and work with Android TV?

Thanks πŸ‘πŸΌ

Hulu App not in Google Play Store

Hey all, I have a weird problem. I was setting up a Mi Box S for my mom and I installed a bunch of apps including Disney+, Crackle and Amazon Video Prime (side loaded). Anyway I went to install Hulu and could not find it in the Google Play Store. I did a search and nothing. Is Hulu no longer supported on Amazon TV. Has anyone else seen this problem? I have it installed on my Android box and just watched something last weekend on Hulu. Any help or thoughts would make my mother very happy. :)

Using mic button on my remote to activate an app's voice search?

I have an Nvidia Shield and a remote with a mic button. When pressing the mic button it activates Google Assistant no matter what app you are in.

I realize that some apps have their own voice search function. Is there a way where I can be in an app and press the mic button so it activate the app's voice search instead of Google Assistant?

I have a feeling that this is hard programmed by Android but I thought I would ask.

I know Stadia isn't officially support on ATV yet but it was working very nicely until I decided to upgrade the sideloaded APK today. It's crashing whenever I try to load RDR2.

Any one else experiencing the same problem? Suppose I could downgrade but have no idea which version I was running before.

Does Xiaomi already fix the mi box s external HDD issue?

Greetings, everyone.

I want to buy Mi Box S for my friend. Primarily, my friend wants to watch MKV format movies from his 2 TB NTFS external hard drive. I read on the internet (and this subreddit) that Mi Box S had a severe problem regarding the external hard drive compatibility in the Oreo version. So, does Xiaomi already fix the issue?

A little side story: I have a Mi TV that runs great on reading the MKV movies via VLC (I've never tried Kodi). I also tried my friend's hard disk, and it ran great. Can I expect the same thing with the Mi Box S? My friend doesn't have any streaming subscription service nor a descent internet, so the Mix Box S probably is gonna just for the media reading.

I welcome any suggestions. Thank you!

EDIT:

Huge thanks for all redditors who replied my question!

I purchased and tried the Mi Box S. I also updated the Mi Box S to the 9.0 version. It read MKV movies well with VLC and KODI (I'm not sure if the movies are h264 or h265 MKV). I notice the Mi Box S performs slightly better than Mi TV (perhaps due to Mi Box S' better RAM).

Wireless show pictures on Android TV

What is the best way to do it? I can obviously use Chromecast/screen mirroring, but then the pictures are limited to my phones resolution with visible pixels and aliasing on the TV. I have my pictures synced with Google Fotos, but there seems no way to access that backup on the android TV.

Am I missing something, or is the only option to copy my pictures to USB if i want to see them in full resolution?

Any Android boxes that only play from USB/SD cards?

My folks have a summer home / cottage without internet access, I am looking for a box that only plays downloaded movies and no Netflix etc. I had a cheap non-android device but had a lot of issues with high bit rate movies wherein they would stutter and skip during playback, presumably due to underpowered processor or RAM..

Nvidia's Shield Pro is my first choice but I dont want to pay for unnecessary features like gaming or apps.

TL;DR Can anyone recommend a device that will allow us to playback pirated movies from USB, but doesnt have other unnecessary features I dont want to pay for?

Android can't play files from USB flash drive.

I just plugged in my flash drive into an Android TV through the USB 1.0 port. When I used the music app, the audio files from the flash drive appears, but when I click play, it doesn't play and a small message comes up that says it can't play the song. Is the problem because I plugged it into the USB 1.0 port (it is a new flash drive, around the time of 2014)? Or is it something else? Thanks.

[Guide] Getting Microsoft Teams working on Android TV

Requirements:

  1. An Android TV Device
  2. A USB Webcam (Almost any will work)
  3. A USB Flash Drive

Prerequisites:

  1. A Copy of Teams compatible with your device - MS Teams - APKMirror
  2. Set Orientation to fix the rotation of the app - Set Orientation - APKMirror
  3. Sideload Launcher - Sideload Launcher - Google Play Store
  4. X-Plore - X-Plore - Google Play Store

Note: You can replace SideLoad Launcher and X-Plore with the TV Launcher and File Browser and installer of your choice.

Installation:

  1. Download Teams from APKMirror. Try the armeabi-v7a build first.
  2. Download Set Orientation from APKMirror.
  3. Copy these files on to your USB Flash Drive
  4. Install X-Plore and Sideload Launcher on your TV from the Google Play Store
  5. Go in to Settings on your TV and enable installing from X-Plore
  6. In X-Plore browse to your flash drive, and click on on the APK to start the install.
  7. Once both APKs are installed, go to the Sideload launcher.
  8. Launch Set Orientation, ignore the error, and set the rotation to Auto rotation (Forced)
  9. Launch Microsoft Teams from the Sideload launcher.
  10. Login to Microsoft Teams like normal.

Known Issues:

For some uses a mouse is needed.

Audio volume for people in a conference is low.

So far I have had issues with the mic cutting out after a few seconds. (May be related to Bluetooth speakers attached to the TV, lacking a mic)

This requires testing on different / better hardware.

Current Setup:

Hisense 43H6570G with a Junk webcam and bookshelf speakers connect by a cheap Bluetooth amp.

Regret

Been using my fancy new Sony KD65X750H Android TV for a couple weeks. Wish I'd bought something else. This is a joke beta platform, extremely buggy and nothing works. Typical bleeding edge tech pushed too soon without any thought.

Endless problems, the apps (the few there are) are even more buggy and broken. Can't stream CBS, can't open the NBC app, on-screen keyboard vanishes... Nothing works. Everything is full of ads, crashes, or is expensive. I miss actual TV. Sony Bravia Android TV is just another layer of selling you shit 24/7 while tracking your every move.

Is this.... normal? What a sick sad world.
