Incredibly frustrated. Controlling mibox from Google Home no longer works

It's a ridiculous state of things.

So in the beginning there was the Android TV remote app, it worked. It had some weird glitches when using keyboard input and trying to use cursors. but otherwise , it worked.

Then one day Google decided to stop this app from working for no reason. And the alternative they gave us was to use a Google TV app, which remains region-locked . So , basically Google removed the feature of being able to control the Android TV box using your phone.

Months, and I mean months later, Google Home app and Mibox finally update in a way that allows the google home app to control it, and it seems like it's finally good.

But then two weeks later, the feature has disappeared, again.

What's worse is that the feature was never added to my google TV and One of my other miboxes is still working. So it looks like the existence of this feature is completely random. Will you get it to work in your Android/Google TV app? God knows.

Android Superbox elite 2

Developer mode. I know the Superbox elite 2 is new and there’s not a lot of information online. I figured out how to unlock developer mode. I can’t seem to find the developer folder. I want to change the time of background graphics to speed up the box loading up apps. Also does anyone recommend a app or third party app compatible with Superbox that can either force quit all running apps at once or an app that will force stop the app from running in the background as soon as I leave that app? Any other tips and tricks would be appreciated too. I just want maximize the speed of the box. Last thing if anyone knows if I can download apps directly to the micro sd instead of internal storage so it won’t bog down the memory on the internal device? Thanks for all the help

Just bought a philips 5766 4k android TV, and having some issues with Disney +

The voices all sound really robotic, like they were recording in a bathroom or something. No other app is doing this. Hulu fine, nextflix fine, YouTube fine. I've temporarily fixed it by lowering the quality to SD which seems to work but I'd really like to watch them in HD st least.

Any tips? I've already tried to change the sound system to external speakers, then back to tv speakers, also changing the encoding type.

So frustrated by my struggle to retro game on Shield TV

I'm looking for some help setting up retro gaming on my shield TV, or at least for somebody to come by and say that I'm wasting my time so I can give up.

I've got Arc browser installed as well as NES.emu and retroarch, but both emulators have significant input lag. I've played with settings and just can't figure it out. I've even tried using a wired controller instead of the shield TV's wireless controller to take that out of the equation. My TV is on game mode and my consoles don't have any noticeable lag, nor does my raspberry pi.

Has anyone experienced and overcome this issue that can share some wisdom? I promise I will never update my shield TV again, if only I can get this thing working well!

Sony X89J trying to view videos via USB prompts 'please wait' message

Software is up to date. Can view pictures and audio files also play fine. However, attempting to navigate to folders which only contain videos prompts a 'please wait' message and then nothing happens. It doesn't navigate to the folder.

A quick Google search says it might take a while to load. I've waited for over 30 mins (the usb harddrive has about a thousand videos, total 600GB). The kicker is, I had the same model (which had a different fault and was returned a few weeks ago) load the usb drive perfectly well and it was able to play the videos within ~10 mins. I didn't add or change anything on the hard drive since.

Anyone experienced anything similar? If you have ideas on how to resolve this please share.

Do blue light filtering apps work while watching normal TV?

Hi.

I'm looking to buy my first smart tv, most probably with android as i'm already familiar with it on my phone and if the tv doesn't come with a night light/blue light feature already built-in i know i can choose from a variety of apps on playstore to get me covered.

The thing is that I'm not sure if the apps work while watching TV channels, like are "normal TV" and Android two separate entities with no link between each other and when you switch to TV the OS shuts down, or is the TV sort of managed by/part of the OS and all apps work in the background regardless?

Because I obviously want my app to keep filtering anything I watch, not just youtube and netflix.

Thanks.

Quest about ONN box remote

Bottom line up front: the channel buttons don't seem to work.

I've got 2021 Vizio TV and a Vizio soundbar. Both seemed to be added correctly...the remote controls the volume on my soundbar and the TV's power and Input buttons are working. I'd also note that when you +Add a Device, I just had to identify my TV as a Vizio--there was no selection for a specific model.

I noticed recently that the channel buttons, however, do not work for my TV. On the ONN's device setup for the TV, there's a submenu titled "Set Up Buttons" that covers 3 buttons (Input, Volume, and Power). I don't fully understand the point of that menu because all it seems to do is test and walk you through how to use those buttons. I validated that the Input and Power buttons work. But there is no option to test the channel rocker.

Do any of you guys actually have that channel rocker working on your TVs? Any further ideas how I might get that button(s) working for my Vizio? It's just really odd that the remote has those buttons at all (IMHO) but omits them from the settings.

Seeking the Perfect Travel Media Streamer

The perfect travel media streamer would (IMHO) have these characteristics:

My use cases are:

  1. In the car (for the kids on long trips). The car has a flip-down screen and HDMI input. There is a nearby USB-A 5v port to power this. There is a USB-C adapter in a cigarette lighter that could be used. There's an on-board inverter powering a 110v AC outlet, but it's not where I'd like to have something plugged-in all the time. Due to connectivity issues in the car, it will almost always be used to play local files, not stream
  2. In a hotel room / airbnb / vrbo... where it will be used to play local files, stream (Netflix, etc.) and use Plex to play files on my home Plex sever. For hotels, it will often need to be able to open a browser to get through the hotel's wifi login / acceptance-of-terms page - that is, unless I get a travel router.

I've looked at a lot of devices, but so far none tick every box - or they do so only with extra add-ons, such as powered USB hubs. I'd like to carry (and power) as few devices as possible - especially in the car.

This is a lot to ask, so I don't necessarily expect the total solution to be cheap.

The Nvidia Shield TV and Shield TV Pro seem like possibilities, but both require a 19v DC power source. To be clear, both come with a power adapter that can connect to any worldwide AC power input source from 100v to 240v, which it converts to 19v DC output. Most of the Intel NUCs also require 19v DC power. There are no good/elegant 12v to 19v car power converter/adapters on the market. At least not any that I can find. There are threads (e.g. this one) where people have taken an Nvidia AC power adapter and MacGyvered it into something that worked off of a vehicle 12v system. I might have to resort to that.

The Shield TV / TV Pro, ONN media streamer, Tivo Streamer, Xiomi Mi Box S, Roku... all use external local storage. Only the NUC (or something like it) can install local internal storage so far as I can find. Being able to install a 2 or 4 TB M.2 SSD (versus connecting a USB flash drive or USB SSD) is attractive just for the sake of having fewer things to haul around.

FWIW... I will probably buy a travel router (e.g. something like the Gl-Net Beryl MT1300) just so that everyone and everything can just use the same SSID name and pw that we use at home.

Reddit Coins to the best two or three suggestions after a week.

My alternative way to sideload APKs

I used to download from my phone then SEND FILES TO TV. Later I learnt to use the downloader app on TV itself but it was complicated. Next step was to install the APK via another file explorer app.

Nowadays, I just use my favourite TV BRO(wser) to directly download an APK from any website then I install the apk using the official APKMirror Installer app.( which is also available from official Android TV playstore).

My built-in Sony browser sucks, then I discovered Puffin Browser but It didn't support downloading. Ii tried TV Bro after seeing recommendations and it's been the best so far.

When waking from several hours of standby, wifi is connected but internet doesn’t work except Netflix. Anyone else experience this or have an idea for how to resolve?

If I “turn off” my TV for several hours (I have quick start enabled, so it isn't fully powered off), it will usually turn on with wifi still connected but no internet. I can avoid this by disabling quick start so that my TV fully turns off or (usually) fix it by disabling wifi and reconnecting after a few seconds, but both of these are annoying and making me consider returning the TV.

Has anyone run into this / have any ideas for fixing? I was thinking about looking into setting up an app to auto-reset wifi, but I am trying to avoid that for now.

Miscellaneous detailed information:

  1. TV is new and exhibited this behavior out of the box.
  2. TV is 43" TCL 4-series with Google.
  3. Checked router time / TV time and they are correct.
  4. Assistant and all apps except Netflix do not work. The network settings show "Connected, no internet". "Check internet connection" in the network settings will quickly say "router connection successful" but will spin endlessly trying to connect to the internet. But again, the internet connection is instantly resolved by resetting the wifi.
  5. I have no idea why Netflix only works. Makes me suspicious of a DNS issue, but I’m pretty ignorant so mostly a shot in the dark.
  6. It seems like the longer the TV is off, the more likely the issue is to occur. Usually occurs only after 6+ hours off. Turning the TV on after leaving it off overnight is the most common case of me seeing the issue.
  7. The TV will not resolve the no internet by itself even if left for a long time. I also considered a solution of setting up a second wifi network just so that it switches back and forth when the internet breaks, but again, would prefer to avoid.

Cannot disable Bluetooth

This seems to be a known issue and has been for a while but it’s unclear if there’s actually a fix for it.

I finally upgraded from a 23 inch TV well over a decade old to a 40 inch TCL TV as I couldn’t even read the screen anymore.

I tried to connect my PS3 and PS4 controllers (1 functioning 3rd party PS3 controller, the official one has long refused to remain paired without being plugged in, PS4 controllers are both are official but one has terrible drift from being in storage during a rough patch in my life)

I have successfully connected my PS4 controllers to my PS3 via cable/Bluetooth before, though it took a few attempts. I was fine using one PS3 and one PS4 controller.

I had also paired a PS4 controller to the TV to hopefully play games (PS Now, PS1 emulator, Google Play etc) but the controllers would only let me navigate menus and wouldn’t work on any game so I gave up and went back to my consoles.

The problem now since that pairing is that the TV’s more modern Bluetooth is constantly trying to override the connection between the PS3 and PS4 controller, bringing up pair requests After disabling Bluetooth visibility on the TV. Have a also tried downloading ‘Bluetooth Visibility App’ from the Google Play store and now more worried about all the malware I’m probably getting.

Any idea how I can 1) get proper functionality on the TV via controllers 2) actually turn off Bluetooth visibility so I can pair devices with things other than the TV and potentially stop other devices trying to connect

Thanks in advance

Would like to buy an Android TV box for VPN

So, I've purchased a Samsung TV (QN85) with tizen OS. I live in eastern Europe and need VPN to use Disney+. I'm thinking about getting an android box. My question is: is there another easier way to get VPN for the TV (I already have surfshark). If the TV box is a good idea, will the TV boxes specs affect the TV? E.g., TV box doesn't have 4K support, will I not be able to watch content in 4k if I am using only the VPN from the TV box?

Pretty much a noob when it comes to TVs. My first smart TV. :/
