Google TV brightness changes when using native apps and subtitles

by YouGuysNeedTalos

So basically all applications I have tried (Netflix and Disney+) on TV with a local dimming enabled, does this thing that the subtitles change the brightness of the whole screen. This is very distracting especially when subtitles disappear in the same shot and you see the blooming around the whole screen.

At first I thought this is an issue with local dimming on the device. However when I tried to play Netflix from an external device instead of the native one, this issue was gone.

This is really a horrendous bug and I am really surprised there are not a lot of mentions about it. I guess this is because a lot of English native speakers don't put subtitles.

This issue has been known for at least half an year based on this answer https://www.avsforum.com/threads/2021-sony-bravia-xr-x90j-owners-thread-faq-no-price-talk.3190601/page-143#post-61428991

Any news about fixing this bug? I paid so much for a Google TV only to be forced to buy an apple TV box to avoid this issue?

I had this issue with my Bravia. I only noticed it when watching HDR content with local dimming turned on. Compared to the video, the subtitles are always extremely bright and would lighten the middle third of the screen. (That probably means there are very few actual dimming zones. )

The only solution I found was to disable local dimming. No more brightening, and the quality of the picture is still good.

Any updates on this one? If this really is a Google TV bug and the only workarounds are disabling contrast enchancer / local dimming or yellow colour / reduced opacity for the subtitles or... just not using the TV apps but get a Firestick/Android box etc, in my opinion none of these is a solution, if this is indeed a bug and it's not fixed yet, that's unacceptable for a TV in that price and users should keep bugging Sony and Google to do something about it. It's really weird to me that something like that isn't all over the thread / internet in general... Maybe not many people watch subtitled movies...
