Quick questions regarding the Google Chromecast with Google TV

by homomemeboi

Hey! I am about to buy a Chromecast with Google TV to replace my Xiaomi Mi TV Stick (the old 1080p one with 1GB RAM).

The Stick gets very hot to the touch and it gets very slow, even when just on the home menu.

We only use it to play streaming services at 1080p since the TV we have is 1080p max

I therefore have a few questions before I buy the Chromecast:

  1. Does the Chromecast overheat much?
  2. Does it pick up high channel 5GHz networks (which the Stick does not), like channel 100?
  3. Is it faster than the Stick?
  4. How stable is it?

I use a Chromecast W/ Google TV exclusively as my main way to watch TV. Its a great little device, the only real issue is the lack of on board Storage. 8GB fills up REALLY fast. If you have more then a handful of Apps, you may wish to look into something else.

Personally, I think I'm going to upgrade to the Nivida Shield Pro, strictly because of the storage issue. Its happened a few times where I simply didnt have enough storage space to update an app, I actually had to delete the app and reinstall it with the current version. Happened twice with HBO MAX.

Overall its a good device that outside of storage issues, has never given me a problem.

I had that stick, returned it the very first day, it was so bad! The Chromecast with Google TV is way better.

I have the ccwgtv is definetly very fast when changing the DNS to cloudshare DNS (1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 instead of Google's 8.8.8.8). It never really became hot in my experience and it's just a good device. The android tv 10 it had is also faster too. I have 5ghz WiFi and it picks it up and can use the 5ghz and I've never had any issues or glitches.

Both devices have roughly the same SoC -- AmLogic S905.

CCwGTV has Gen 3 and I'd bet the stick has Gen 2. Only potential difference would be like 100 MHz on the clocks. G4 is only another small bump but adds AV1 decoding.
