Onn Android TV Box signal issue?

by dmjohn0x

Im not entirely sure what the issue is here. But I was suggested this box on this forum as a cheap Android TV box replacement that can handle decrypting x265 video. Ive got a problem though. The video signal drops in and out every 30 seconds. The device doesnt restart, but the screen cuts to black and audio stops, then it comes back on like nothing happened. My old tv box and my PS5 dont do this. So it has to be this device. I tried switching to a different power supply, and no change. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Update: It works now. Went through several HDMI cables to find one it played nice with.

Edit 2: It didnt stay working flawlessly. I did a lot more testing and came to the conclusion that the HDMI signal from these tiny cheap devices are either off spec, or the lowest possible allowed leading them to be a bit sketch on some TV's. My TV for reference is a 2021 58" 4K Hisense Roku Smart TV.

"It seems to be a problem with the device having almost zero power. I played with more HDMI cables and TV Input settings. What I noticed was that longer cables would make my TV not even find a signal. Cables of 2-4ft would give me a signal but with frequent drops an reconnects with the longer of these showing what looked like static on big blocks of solid colors. The shortest cables I had of 1.5ft is holding up the best with rare drops that pick right back up.

Seeing as I noted this issue on two different boxes both with them hooked up directly to my tv and going through a splitter then to my tv, as well as all 3 hdmi ports on my television. Ive pretty much got it narrowed down to the low output signal strength from the Onn 4K Android TV Box's HDMI out.

When ruling out my TV, I used an old s905x Android box using the same cables, as well as a PS2 w/ HDMI converter, a PS5, and a mirroring cable to output from my laptop. All devices worked flawlessly except the two Onn 4k Android TV Boxes. So my assumption is they are off-spec or have abysmal QC.

Ill be upgrading to a more reliable box next week."

I've had this happen because of a bad HDMI cable.

Mine works great. Sounds like you got a bad one. Return it and exchange for another one.

Mine hasn't given me any issues in the year I've had it. I'd exchange it and see what happens.

Go exchange it

What player are u using on the ONN?

My best experience with these is a direct Ethernet connection. They work flawlessly for me that way. You just need an adapter and proper power supply.

Try another HDMI cable and if that doesn't work, you may need to get a replacement.

Thanks for updating on this! Was having the hardest time finding users with this exact same issue too. All the other threads were to do with remote control issues, or whole device restarts, neither of which was what happening on mine, was only seeing the video signal dropping in and out as well...

Had also tried different power sources and was thinking to swap out the hdmi cables next, but all the cables in my home are 1metre or longer.

For reference, mines an older Sony Bravia KDL-42W700B that's had a Chromecast attached to the back of it for most of its life and never seen this issue.

Will go out and try and find one of those comical 10cm cables (to match the Chromecast dongle cable length) and hopefully that will resolve it completely.
