Android TV keeps disconnecting VPN the moment I load another app

by AbhinShetty

I've tried everything to get the VPNs to work, but my TV just kicks the VPN off the moment I load another app. Any help?

I've been having the same problem and partially fixed it by removing my vpn from the Energy Saver list in settings.

I didn't have this problem until Google did an update on my TCL tv recently.

Try Surfshark instead of Nord vpn. If problem continues run a virus scan on your TV. Use Eset smart tv security it will pick up a virus if you have one. If it doesn't accept the scan you can have multiple viruses. If all is ok beware that some electronic are not compatible with certain apps. Also if it's a Shield TV you are commenting on email Nvidia also about the problem. Make sure you use the original sites when downloading any apps or the playstore. Hope this helps you or others.

Hopefully this will work for you guys i solved this by using the Openvpn for Andriod app. It looks like there is a bug in some bespoke VPN apps where they disconnect when changing to different apps in my case the ExpressVPN app wasn't working as intended.

  1. Download Openvpn config file (.ovpn) from you VPN provider copy to USB, Download Openvpn for Andriod and FX file explorer (the open vpn app has a bug where it cant read local storage so this is requried as a workaround).
  2. In FX file explorer go to Media Card select .ovpn file -> Open As -> */* application -> Convert Config File (should see OpenVPN app symbol). The profile is now imported
  3. Go to OpenVPN app and if your lucky pop in your username and password and all is good. If your unlucky (as i was) a bunch of errors will appear relating to various settings in the config file. You will likely have to tweak/remove these from the config file to get it working re-import and try again.

I would suggest enabling split tunneling/app control for the VPN if you have specific apps you do/don't want to use the VPN. There is a VPN on boot option somewhere in the settings but this didn't work for me so don't forget to reconnect after software updates etc. Good luck!

I think they did that on purpose to be quite honest with you

I have been dealing with this exact problem for a year and I know I can’t be the only one. I have changed energy settings, changed developer options to max processes allowed and tried both nord and ipvanish and my vpn app will still close in the background. Usually it will stay connected if I watch ONE movie or do one search in an app like tubi or peacock but if I start browsing around then the vpn app will close in the background. Isn’t there a way to just have the tv/internet DIRECTLY connected to the vpn like without using the app?

Indicate the vpn name and is a paid one or free one you are using. Never heard of that issued happening.
