A better local media app and remote control for the Walmart ONN TV box?

by starman09

I just got that $20 ONN Android TV box from Wal-Mart , plugged in an external USB drive with some MP4 movies I have saved and to my surprise it played them quite well using the built in movie player app. Now that I know it works I'd appreciate any suggestions for:

  1. A better media player app than the movie player app I'm using. Maybe something that let's you scroll through a video and see a little thumbnail preview as you scroll, like what you get on YouTube. And something that plays photos and music files would be nice.
  2. A better remote control, one with buttons for fast forward/rewind and skip chapter or ahead buttons that work with a media player app. I see some "universal" remotes on Amazon that claim to work with an Android TV box but would love to hear of one that someone actually uses with the ONN box.

If there are good options for the above two items this may be the best media player option I've ever found.

VLC is a free and excellent media player app. As for your other request, the G20S air mouse remotes look nice.

MX Player is best.

Kodi of course is the best media player on Android. Nova is also pretty good and maybe easier to set up for a beginner. FF/RW is built into the stock remote circle button. Don't know if there were a remote with chapter skip that there are apps that would support it. The ONN remote is probably the best Android TV remote outside of the Nvidia Shield remote. And those thumbnails have to be generated for each move and take up a lot of space so you need a media server type system like Plex or Emby or Jellyfin for that kind of thing with local media.

Nova player is a simple media player that scraps. Plex would be next, Plex media server is built into shield so it should work fine. Then there is Kodi, more customizable but can take some set up.

/r/novavideoplayer is the best video player app I've used.

The included droidlogic movie player app may not be feature packed, but it works better than any third party player in terms of sync and not getting tripped up during ff/rew operations.

Not every amlogic device includes the movie player app, so it is a real bonus to have it.

I use a remote from another device (the verizon stream tv gen2) with the onn, because it has play and ff/rew buttons that are useful with the movie player app on the onn device.
