Controlling TV over phone/computer not on wifi

by Limp-Logoo

My grandparents can't trouble shoot the tv anymore and it'll be easier if they call me and I change the channel/select programing for them. Is there any way I can control their TV from my my phone?

Harmony remote and android tv remote and a vpn

Harmony hub or a broadlink device could help.

Ok, I do not know ruko, I have never owned or have the optunity to play with one.

Now, having said that, I have a knowledge of many type of devices and how they could work.

This knowledge was obtained by having had the chance to play with many types devices (Military, industrial, commercial, experimental, consumer, amature / hobbyist), and many different OSes over the decades.

This knowledge and principles can be applied to many things and functions.

If I have no dirrect experience with a device, or OS I can only offer shoulds and coulds.

On the other hand, if I have played wirh a device, or OS, I can offer shoulds, coulds, and cans.

If I have played with both the OS and the device, I can offer shoulds, coulds, cans, woulds, and wills.

Does this make sense?

So with this in mind; here are some "could" FYI links:

If you wish to explore them, I will be glad to assist when needed.

Hey, I found a way thanks to that tip from u/totti2k2. This is assuming that your grandparents have an android phone that could have an app on it that can control their tv (android remote app, firestick remote etc) It works for android tv, I haven't used it on firestick, but I would think it would...

Is it elegant? No. Worth the trouble? Maybe. It is for me . . .

This is how I do it, may not be best for you, but you'll get the idea:

I installed teamveiwer on my laptop.

Installed Quicksupport on the host tv.

Installed Quicksupport on the hosts phone which has the remote on it.

Installed Teamviewer Remote Control on my phone.

Connect host tv using laptop. Now I can see the target tv screen. (but can't control it)

Connect to hosts phone using Teamviewer Remote Control. Now I can use the remote app on the host phone to control the host tv, which I can see on my laptop.

All the tech impaired family member has to do is grant permissions when they pop up on their TV and phone. After you set it all up, of course.

It cracks me up that they would call you to change the channel--sounds very familiar . . .
