Check your AC to USB Power Brick

by ReddiePenguin

I know this has been discussed somewhat here and there in comments. I just wanted to let folks know the strange issue I had just in case they run in to the same issue.

I have an Onn 4K Box and it was flawless for weeks.

Within the past week, I was getting weird reboots and freezes all out of the blue.

Now my box was powered by an Alcatel AC to USB adapter rated the exact same as the one included with the Onn. (The included one had way too short of a cord for my setup).

Even though the AC Adapter was never used before, changing it out for a Motorola AC Adapter (again same exact specs), strangely fixed all issues.

So I don't know if some adapters don't really put out 1A or if even new adapters can start to konk out.......

I was having restarts on my tivo 4k until I switched out the 1a block it came with(!!) to a 2amp one. No problems since. Good tip!

This is why I always keep my old cables and chargers in a box in my garage. You never know what you are going to need. My Onn. 4K is running great, but I will switch the power adapter with a phone charger and mini-USB cable if I ever have trouble.

Yes, those adapter can differ slightly even when they have the same specs. And they can go bad. This isn't extremely likely with the good quality ones, but far from unheard of. The cheap ones (the 3 for $5 ebay variety style) are known to sometimes fail in a 'spectacular' ways, too, so don't cheap out on those things either, the good ones aren't that expensive after all.
