Resetting a TV that won't turn on

by djabbado

I recently set up a cheap Blaupunkt AndroidTV that someone gave me last year. After trying out a few things with it like attempting to get Button Mapper to work etc it's started acting up. For instance I was streaming a movie last night and all of a sudden it restarted. When the system came back up the remote was unresponsive. I had to use the buttons on the TV to get it to start responding. It seemed ok after that but this morning it wouldn't turn on via the remote. I'm going to reset it and start from scratch.

But I have a bit of a "what if..." question: what if an Android TV won't turn on at all even after power cycling and all the other hoo-ha so it can be reset through the menu? Is there a way to hard reset them similar to how you reset most phones with a hardware button combo?

The old Philips TV I'm using has this method to force reboot: unplug power cord, press and hold center joystick for 20 seconds, plug back in. I assume other TVs work similarly, just like you can force reboot every Android phone by holding down the power button for 20 secs.

If the device can't boot after that, it should display a recovery menu and you may be able to adb into it via usb to reflash or whatever.

Yes there are accessible recoveries in android TV devices. Or at least, it was in my older TCL androditv model. I used it update my TV to a new android version from a different region because the TCL, being TCL, never pushed any update for my TV in my region.

You should do a web search using your TV's model number or may refer to its user manual.
