Is there a way to convert a Samsung Galaxy S8+ into a SmartTV / GoogleTV ?

by trvexepression

I've got a screen-broken S8+ from a friend of mine and I was messing around with it to use it as a setup box for my non-Smart TV, I've tried using Samsung Dex but it's not that User Friendly ( I want my parents to use it easily)

So I was wondering if there was a way to convert the OS of my smarphone into an overpowered TVOS (every OS is fine, it just needs to be a TVOS)

any suggestions? (I dont wanna uuse kodi or other tvos-like-launchers cos of instability)

Short answer? No. You can't flash Google TV, you can flash any AOSP ROM, put tv launcher on it, but it's gonna be painfully not intuitive, then the remote question, then widevine issues, it's not worth it. You will get better experience with any cheap Android tv box

Just get a TV stick...less headache.

for your mental health, just stick to a cheap android tv box like onn it is literally $20 + tax or a firestick 4k.

been there but not done that. trust me it's not worth the hassle of buying accessories (almost same cost for a cheap certified box) and the risk of the phone's battery getting exploded due to constant charging/discharging (which applies to any phones, not just samsung specific). If you're located in the states, get a walmart onn box, chromecast w/ gtv if outside

Its just like hooking any computer up to your TV. I would use a USB-C hub for ethernet, hdmi, USB and just install a launcher you can use with a mouse.

Then look for what you want your parents to use it for and get those apps, put them on the home screen and disable rotation.

An AOSP rom as suggested might be good.

Use a USB C to HDMI CABLE!

You said the TB is non smart; so what inputs does it have?

If it doesn't have HDMI you proabely need a HDMI adapter.

I like Dex. I've got a cheap dock, a big monitor and it works like a phone. Settled on it after fruitlessly experimenting with Linux for a travel laptop, then realized I had the perfect OS in my pocket. Just add a dock and a cable.
