Upgrade from CCGTV to Nvidia Shield Pro

by jeffmaiyun

I've been using the CCGTV for my LG Oled B9 for half a year and was quite satisfied. Everything works fine until when I tried to play some high bitrate(more than 30Mb) Bluray movie from Kodi it shutters a lot. Since it should be the issue with CPU I decided to upgrade to the Nvidia Shield Pro, which makes me quite disappointed.

1.The UI is not rendered in 4k. I immediately recognize the difference between the CCGTV and Shield. I tried to use Adb to force rendering in 4k, but some apps like Disney has an strange layout. So I roll back to 1080p then.

2.The CCGTV always outputs Dolby Vision signal, which looks brighter and more vivid on my TV. I don't find an option in Shield.

3.While playing Spotify sometimes the audio drops out. Never encountered this on CCGTV.

4.Now in Kodi there's no problem playing the high bitrate Bluray Movie, but I feel(maybe) the jutter is more obvious.

Except the problems above I do enjoy the 4K upscaling and the Gamestream function. I don't know if I should return it since I could expect more Upgrade from a 200 Euro device.

The CCwGTV renders the Ui in 1080p as well.

All of Android TV does until they update to ATV 12 which supports 4k UI.

1 how much time do you spend looking at the UI? Personnally, almost never

2 always have dolby vision on makes for inacurrate viewing as the content is not mastered in DV is still displayed in DV. Maybe you prefer it but it's not really an advantage. A device should match thd correct dynamic range

3 not sure why you have issues with spotify but i don't and i use a modded app.

4 at least a positive! Have you matched refresh rate for the judder?

If you don't like it return it, but it doesn't get better than the shield when it comes to android tv.

I am curious, have you updated to the newest Shield TV OS?

If you need to go into the developer options; select show all display resolutions. While your there, make any other tweaks you might need. Also be sure to downgrade the APK SDK ver of any app you find your having issues with.

Now goto the Display and Sound settings, Advance display, Custom display mode and set your preferred display mode.

Mine boot up to 4096x2160@60.

Then goto Advance Sound, Available formats, select Manual and turn off anything that you don't need or use.

Now goto Power control CEC and check for conflicts and address any found.

Now Reboot!

The issue with the high bitrate on CCwGTV is not the CPU but the wifi. Get yourself a USB-C Hub with ethernet and take care of that problem. DV always on is considered a bad thing which is why CCwGTV put in the ability to match color space after it launched, which the Shield has always had. I will repeat you need to turn on refresh rate switching in Kodi as Android TV devices don't have device wide refresh rate switching. This is also something coming with Android 12 if any device ever adopts it.
