i want something better than using my old sony blu ray player to view movies i have stored on my local network.
as well as music (mp3's), and photos (jpg,png, animated gif).
i have tried to research this myself with google but am overwhelmed with search results.
i am hoping someone here can point me in the right direction.
is there a box i can buy for under $300 that will do everything i need done ?

I've had the Nvidia Shield 2017, since well 2017. Still running strong on my main screen in my home, and still getting relevant android system updates. For that budget, there's not a better android box on the market than the Nvidia Shield line.

a $20 onn box can do that perfectly fine if you're located in the US. Outside US, or if budget isn't a concern and you want premium quality/performance then go for Shield Pro like others have suggested. US or not, don't bother with non-certified generic android boxes.
