I'm running a dongle with thumb-drive storage on my CCWGTV and I also have an ONN box. Unfortunately I can't test the ONN because it uses micro-USB whilst the CCWGTV is USB C.
That said, have you considered how the drive is formatted? IIRC (it's been over a year) I'm pretty sure your storage must be formatted correctly to be usable. I can't remember if it's FAT32 or something else.
