Setting up a TV for a museum (like in shops, store windows,...)

by JohnMundel

Hello everyone,

I work in a small museum and we just got a TV (XIAOMI MI TV P1 43) to broadcast our documentaries. It's (of course!) an Android TV.

I am looking for a way to make the TV power on and start playing the movie in loop when the museum opens and shuts down/sleeps when it closes.

For the moment, we have a black screen video with a duration equal to the closure duration, but it's not really awesome because the TV is always on. We have already disabled sleep mode and screen saver timers.

Is there any way to do that, using Android TV settings or an app? Or the default demo mode used in shops?

Thanks for your help!

You might be better off getting a Raspberry Pi to have automation as described

Does your TV resume previous videos when turned on? Then you might be able to get a some sort of home-automation compatible (smartthings, google home, etc) IR blaster and program it to turn the TV off and on at set time.

Example : https://www.switch-bot.com/products/switchbot-hub-mini This thing can learn IR remote functionality and mimic those functions when triggered. Your TV uses bluetooth remote.

Or maybe does it support integration with google home? Then it can be used to turn the TV on/off according to schedule. Well my shield I can turn it on/off with google home and I can set routines inside google home app to turn the shield on/off at set time.

I use these for this purpose.

It can power off the USB port on the TV and will auto play video files from the chip or USB drive. One of the ones I installed in a hotel has been running 24/7 for 10 years now. Because they are cheap they do have a spare in case the primary one fails.

You can use a simple light timer to turn the TV power on and off. Many TVs have a setting to have them power on automatically when plugged in.

Or try the VLC Player app for android tv
