It's very hard to pair and wouldn't stay paired. Won't pair with my phone either. Did a reset.

Have you tried a otg cable and keyboard?
I had one that the remote failed to pair so I took that remote and paired it with the Chromecast with Google TV.
I know this might be a dumb question but was the box updated to current firmware? When these ONN boxes first came out they had issues with the remotes not staying paired. A newer firmware solved the issue.
