ONN 4K Box questions

by vercingetorix78

Sorry for the likely dumb questions, but I'd appreciate the input.

I have a couple different Fire devices, but I'm unhappy with the interface and some of the features, so I was wondering how the ONN box compared.

Can you control the volume on bluetooth headphones with the remote control?

Can you pair more than one set of headphones simultaneously?

Can you use a USB drive as Internal Storage, via ADB or other ways?

Can you remap the quick action buttons on the remote?

Any video codecs that it has issues with?

No problems using custom launchers as your Home page?

If you've got experience with the ONN Box and Fire devices running FireOS v6, is there any differentiation that you feel is worth mentioning?

Cheers

Re: Bluetooth Headphones

For best audio sync with videos you have to get low latency bluetooth transmitters and headphones that support low latency bluetooth as well.

As far as I know, neither the ONN nor the fire sticks support low latency bluetooth.

The only budget streaming box company that seems to care about syncing audio with the video displayed is Roku. And because of the variability and confusion of bluetooth audio implementations, Roku has completely avoided using standard bluetooth for their wireless audio. Their WiDi solution with some of their remotes was their first solution. Now they also have audio that streams through their smartphone app synced to your Roku box. I've found that those are the best headphone solutions for audio with streaming boxes.

Yes you can set up a USB drive as storage. Quick action buttons are locked to the individual device and apps so you can't remap them. Only thing it doesn't support video wise is Dolby Vision. You can use 3rd party launchers same as you can on Fire TV. I use the ONN UHD with stock launcher, I do have 3rd party launchers installed but prefer stock, and Fire Stick 4K Max with a 3rd party launcher on a 1080p TV. There is no difference in performance between them that I can tell. They handle every app I use pretty much exactly the same. ONN UHD is seriously the best budget device out there if you don't need Dolby Vision and Atmos on most streaming services.

Remapping remote buttons is possible with root using a Magisk module and the Button Mapper app

Great resource I found for this box, the bit about flauncher and the ADB command to remove the Google-y launcher were all I needed to get a very, very clean setup going.

Can you use the onn 4k uhd streaming box on any hd tv...or does it have to be a 4k for it to work?

Can you use an Android phone as a remote and keyboard?

Is it possible to use the included remote to control IR devices? I have a very similar unit produced by the same manufacturer, but I can't program IR keys on the remote. When I go to Remotes & Accessories menu, there is no program your buttons option?

Search this subreddit, the Onn.4K device has dozen of posts about it, various posts recommending & customizing this great budget device.

As for:

"video codecs"

If the FireOS6 device you have is the old 4K model, then you give up DolbyVision when switching to the Onn.4K, and another loss is Auto-Refresh-Rate matching for the Apps (ie. Kodi, Plex, PrimeVideo, Tivimate) that the feature automatically works with.

But if having DolbyVision is important to you, plus also switching away from FireTV devices, then spend a few dollars more on the TiVo Stream4K or Google Chromecast-GTV.
