Hardware movie player with file upload

by JackFrenson

Hi,

I'm looking for a device to replace my Raspberry PI4 (Kodi) which was my 1st choice movie player connected to the TV before HDMI ports stopped working.

I thought about MI Box 4k S but I couldn't find an option to upload movies directly to the box. Raspberry was good but some movies were choppy and framerate dropped.

What I'm looking for:

- a cheap device

- ethernet port

- expandable storage - pendrive or SD card or HDD/SDD without external power supply

- possibility to upload films to the device

- srt/txt subtitles playback

- at least 4K

What's not needed:

- streaming

- netflix/prime

I live in Europe. What would you suggest?

See my thread, in short> I had a pi for the same thing but compared to an android box, experience is night and day. Rpi is an all-purpose mini computer barely capable of multimedia..

My suggestion is just get any 1080p/4k box on the cheap, fire/xiaomi/nameless chinese brand and run your media off network shares. Running USB hdds on low-powered devices is not adviseable but you can do it (I do). The most reliable solution for me seems to be to use a cheap computer with hdds and usb sticks sticking out of it (a router/htpc/NAS) and enable smb shares for your whole network. This way all the android stick/box does is run things off network, like any other device in your house. Alternatively you can just share folders from your desktop/phone/laptop...

Any Amlogic device with a S905X3 SoC running CoreELEC. Make sure it has gigabit Ethernet.

Regardless if the following have Netflix and Prime Video certifications, they are capable of doing what you want, however, there aren't Android TV devices with internal HD bays, you may either connect an HD and use it as an external unpluggable HD or format it as an internal one that can't be accessed by anything else but the device where it was formatted for:
