Android TV game expectations

by aeonax

I'm making a simple spaceship racing game. And it just got approved for TVs yesterday, after 2 months of rejections. I would love to get your views on certain questions of mine.

I have the following questions? Why do you/do you not play games Android games on tv? What kinda controls will/do you use with a tv? Remote, gamepad, keyboard, touch, something else? Will you be interested in a split screen game?

Supporting xinput would be good. I use a Bluetooth Xbox controller with my Shield TV. Gaming with a remote would have more availability for those who don't have a gamepad (fire sticks, etc) but clunky. I've never played split screen on non-emulated games; but it would be a cool feature as long as the device had the power to run it.

I think it's safe to say Android TV can be found a lot more in family households than in single ones. Hardcore gamers, regardless of games, definitely don't play their faves on Android TV and people who do play don't care enough about the games but rather to have a quick playing session with their loved ones, IMHO.

That said, for me, local co-op and easy to play games like 80s-90s retro games suit the platform the best. After all, a TV is something for family members to share with each other and have fun. Additionally, fast loading time and PG rated content will associate with higher retention rate given the mentioned audiences will likely to have kids.

If I wanna play alone, I'll grab my phone, turn on my PC or xbox in my bedroom. If I wanna bond with my kids and there's a fun, quick, easy, and good looking game on the TV, why bother turning on the playstation? My kids like the game and having fun with me, why don't I install that game on their grandparents' TV and let them play together the next time we visit? So on and so on

some remote control app similar to bombsquad, that would be really cool and handy

I like using a controller for games. And yes I would be interested in a split screen game.

I will play fortnite. With mouse and keyboard.

I won't play stupid shit like minion rush.

Depends on why it is splitscreened.

I always say that Android tv, Android mobile, iphone, ipad, windows, MacBook, any of these devices have other purposes. These things are not made for gaming. For gaming we should always buy Xbox or playstation.

From my point of view, Android tv is only for watching tv shows, movies
