Onn Android TV vs. Chromecast with Google TV - SmartTube

by ElectronicCommitment

Trying to get rid of ads for Youtube when we cast from our phone to our TV, my son doesn't want a PiHole and I don't want to buy Youtube Premium. I currently use an old-school Chromecast now on a Samsung Smart TV.

What's the cheapest or most effective solution for this? Do I need to buy external storage for the Onn or Chromecast with Google TV? Does the Onn have Walmart quality and is there a noticeable difference vs. the Chromecast?

Our ultimate goal is to be able to stream videos from our phones to the TV without annoying ads playing, is there a way to do that? (I heard of people just using the history function on SmartTube but we don't want to do that)

I use smarttubenext on our tv, cast it using YouTube Vanced on my phone. Works fine, no ads. Use the latest edition of both apps.

You'll have to sideload smarttubenext on your Chromecast.

PiHole won't get rid of the ads anyway as it is a DNS blocker and can't tell ads from content by url. To block the ads you would need to use an app that blocks the ads, like SmartTube.

No real way around it. Casting to SmartTubeNext probably bypasses its ad blocker. You need to use the app itself.

Consider the money you spend on either device, why don't you get YouTube premium for cheap with the vpn trick? It's covered a lot on other subreddits
