Is the Shield TV really worth it for me?

by Daugdaug_

To clarify on the question, I have the Shield TV and I bought it mainly for responsiveness and the addition of gaming capabilities.

I have a 4K Sony TV that came with android TV function and it’s just horrible. It’s underpowered to the point even the UI lags. It frustrated me to the point that I just exploded and came home within the hour with the Shield TV in hand.

The Shield TV is great. Very responsive with some gaming capabilities. Although I find it great, I don’t use its gaming capabilities as often as I thought I would.

I’m basically wondering if I can return the Shield TV, go the $50 Google TV, and still have the responsiveness I want.

Just keep the Shield, it's the best Android TV device that I'm aware of. There's no reason to downgrade your experience to save a few bucks.

Shield TV - No

Shield TV Pro - Yes

The ShieldTV is the best GoogleTV experience there is.

The Chromecast with GoogleTV works fine, but it is anything but a smooth UI experience. Bu tit is probably the best in it's price range.

Keep the Shield TV. The Chromecast with Google TV is terribly underpowered and has comically low internal storage, both of which have caused users problems. I have a CCwGTV in my spare bedroom so I can watch YouTube when exercising, but it only wound up there after a brief run as my main streaming device.

The Google TV interface really turned me off. I know people complain about the Shields new interface, but at least we don't have C-list celebrity recommendations forced on our home page! Additionally, of the 8GB of storage, you really only have access to half that storage due to the size of the operating system. I would run into occasional storage issues due to app cache with 10 or so apps installed.

Finally, waking the CCwGTV from sleep sometimes takes 20-30 seconds for the interface to refresh. It's a total first world problem, but it becomes annoying over time when you just want to dive into Netflix or YouTube, but have to wait for the interface to pull down new ads from Google.

The Shield - even with the buggy Android 11 upgrade - is really a "set it and forget it" device for me. It always loads everything super quick, I never run into storage issues, having ethernet is a plus, etc.

There are ways you can add ethernet or expanded storage to the Chromecast, but by the time you buy the dock you have really eaten into the value of the device IMO.

TLDR; If you can afford it, stick with the Shield. If the extra $100-150 you would take with the CCwGTV is a necessity, you can live with the CCwGTV, but it's going to be a bumpy ride occasionally.

Honestly you can do even better than that and save more money by getting the ONN 4k box from Walmart. Runs the same Discover UI that Shield has and it's only $20 bucks. I call them my mini Shields. Sold my Chromecasts I like them so much and the remote is nicer.

Yeah, it should be comparable. It obviously won't be as fast and identically snappy but should be fine. You could also go to Walmart online and buy a $20 onn box 4K. If I remember right it has the exact same processor if not a very similar processor to the Google TV One and is only 20 bucks. I use the ONN box regularly and really enjoy it. Also, it uses pure Android and follows Google guidelines for the internals, so theoretically it should receive proper updates. I've had it for about a year and has already received two updates.

The only issue with the onn box 4K is that it does not do Dobly Vision or Dolby Atmos so if your TV has Dobly Vision or you need Dolby Atmos sound, it might be a deal breaker. Then it might be worth getting the Google TV since that supports Dobly Vision and dobly Atmos

Shield TV is a great device. Another really good device for half the price of the Nvidia Shield is the MeCool KM2. It's also google certified

I have both and reckon shield is pretty awesome but I wouldn't buy another one because like op I don't game with it. Ccwgtv has a better remote and is easier to put non-standard apps on. I only use a few apps so storage isn't an issue for me but there's nothing stopping you from plugging in a USB c hub with a pd charger to give you extra accessibility.

cantwejustplaynice

I've got both. My brother gave me his old PS4 and I haven't touched any of the gaming features of the Shield since they pale in comparison. So for an overall Google experience the new Chromecast is better for me. Only downside is tiny storage. Although it can be expanded (awkwardly).

Which Sony TV do you have? My 2021 edition is faster than my CCwGTV, which is itself more than fast enough.

Sasha_Listel

Thank you for that ! I bought a 2600€ Sony tv, which is a lot for me, and it is a pile of shit with thousands of slow and useless recommendations. The picture is amazing though.

OP, I'm in the same boat. My X85J has unbelievably horrid lag and bugs on the Google TV OS. I was looking forward to the OS, having assumed that Sony would deliver a high end product in the end. So wrong. The TV feels like it has hardware 5 years too old to run it well.

I've been eyeing a Shield as well. May check out some of these cheaper options first.

Keep it.

Wierd that you had these issues at first.

Are you only going to be doing streaming?

No major benefit. I would recommend you getting 3rd gen Firestick and mod it. Recently LineageOS 18.1 has been released for this devices.
