Mi TV Stick & surround sound

by heydaysoup

So I have an older Sony AV receiver (STR-KG800) with a Mi TV Stick hooked up directly to its HDMI-port, and another HDMI cable connecting the receiver and TV.

I’ve always been able to get 5.1 sound with other devices (gaming consoles, DVD players etc.) using this connection method, but for some reason the TV Stick only produces 2.0 sound, regardless of which app I’m running. I’ve tried fiddling with every setting possible, both on the receiver and the Stick, but nothing has worked so far. Funny thing is, when I use the built-in Chromecast on the Stick, it’s suddenly able to produce 5.1 sound without a glitch.

I’ve just about given up on a solution, but if anyone out there might know a fix, I’m all ears!

You need Dolby Digital Plus supported TV/receiver to get 5.1 on the stick

Your AV receiver only supports Dolby Digital and DTS while the stick has Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Digital passhtrough only (and supposedly DTS as well), which means, if you are trying to play Dolby Digital Plus content, the stick won't transcode it to Dolby Digital because its SoC is not the variant B (S905X-B) found in a very few Android TV devices, therefore you'll get only stereo with DD+ content but passtrough with DD content.

Can you tell me what apps have you tried?
